    • @LyfeUntethered
      @LyfeUntethered  2 года назад +2

      Yes! You can't fly in national parks - so that's a big chunk, as in, the big glacier and Thingviller National Park. I asked for permission online to fly at Diamond Beach, but was denied becuase of the seaons for birds breeding or something. I could have flown in a lot of other places, however. There's usually a sign if drones aren't permitted. Where it's NOT permitted is usually to protect wildlife. It is worth bringing a drone, for sure, just be mindful of the signs.

      We went early June. It was kind of perfect, not too crowded, moderate weather, kind of the beginning of the "season". Plus, because it literally never got dark, we could hit most spots any time of day or night and avoid crowds altogether. One catch is that you won't see northern lights in June. That's a winter thing. It's the only time we've ever been, so I can't say if it's the best time or not. Iceland IS expensive, so it's gonna be cheaper in the winter... But also ❄❄! Thanks!

    Bear in mind that all these complicated Icelandic place names are just German-style compound words. A name like Eyjafjallajökull is easier when broken down into it's components; Eyja-Fjalla-Jökull. The literal meaning reflects the fact that it is a glacier (jökull) sitting atop a series of mountains (fjalla), seen from the Vest-manna-eyjar (Eyjar = Islands, i.e. Westman Islands) - the alternative being that the Vest-manna-eyjar can be seen from this glacier.
    Jökulsárlón, broken down, is Jökuls-ár-lón, i.e. Glacer-River-Lagoon. Simple, right?
    If you are raised with the oldest known Norwegian dialect (Old Norse) as your native language (also called Icelandic) this becomes as natural as breathing...

    Very beautiful photography. But "Seljalandsfoss" does not mean "selling the land of waterfalls". The word "sel" is a cognate of "shieling" which means "collection of huts on a seasonal pasture". "Seljaland" is then the name of the area around the waterfall, which probably used to contain a lot of shielings (literally: "land of shielings") and Seljalandsfoss therefore means waterfall in the land of shielings.

    • @LyfeUntethered
      @LyfeUntethered  Год назад +1

      Thanks! Google failed me 😂! The true meaning is much more interesting. How bad was my pronunciation of all the Icelandic words?

    • @rognvalduringthorsson7727
      @rognvalduringthorsson7727 Год назад +1

      @@LyfeUntethered A well kept secret is that every Icelander takes such pleasure from foreigners attempting to pronounce icelandic words (no matter the pronounciation), that you never have to feel guilty about it. But I was generally impressed by the pronunciation (especially 'Seljavallalaug' and 'Skógarfoss'). It might be of interest to you that 'Seljavallalaug' and 'Seljalandsfoss' are more closely related in meaning than you might suspect. The 'sel' in both is a cognate of the old English 'shieling', and 'land' is simply land in English, but 'valla' in 'Seljavallalaug' is the genitive of the word 'vellir' which means roughly 'flatlands'. So, Seljalandsfoss really means 'waterfall in the land of shielings' and 'Seljavallalaug' means 'bathing pool in the land of shielings'. The word 'laug' means bathing pool and the icelandic word for Saturday is 'Laugardagur', literally day of going to the bathing pool = clean up day before Sunday; the day of rest.

      @rognvalduringthorsson7727 Год назад +1

      I have to add that the interviews with the woman who told the story of Hrunalaug and the guy talking about Grettislaug was really special. It got to the history of the places your were depicting. I had some very personal moments, since my grandmother was born on a farm close to Grafarkirkja and as a youngster (about 11 yrs old) I helped deliver lambs in the springtime on the meadows just where the beer spa is now. At that time (in the early 1980s) beer was prohibited by law. It was first made legal in 1986. Thank you!

    Hidden gems? It is mostly all the usual stuff, so hidden is click bait - great dislike from mee

      @@TrevorJonescreator thanks. I was just very disappointed as I was searching for the hidden gems, that not so many visit, not the things that you read and hear about in ordinary tourist information. There are so many other places to visit on Iceland, and I'm planning our next trip to we avoid those overcrowded places and go for the real hidden gems. Stay safe.
