    My rice paper is rough on one side and smooth on the other, bought from Hobby Lobby. Which side should I use? Just getting into this art form, much thanks. Great video too.

      Hello Freddie! Good to hear from you. Excellent question! Generally we paint on the smooth side, particularly for calligraphy and flowers, but you might have fun trying some strokes on the rough side too and seeing what effects you get. Rocks and mountains are particularly exciting!

    Lovely video, thank you for sharing. Did you use acrylic or chinese ink?

    • @VirginiaLloydDavies
      @VirginiaLloydDavies  7 лет назад

      I never use acrylic. I usually use either Western watercolors or Marie's watercolors. I used to use silk dyes on rice paper, but they have a tendency to fade.

    How do you know what the leaves look like? Do you paint with the plant in sight, from memory? from knowledge? I wouldn't know how to begin to paint a leaf... In the pond they look like big flat plates on the water...

    • @VirginiaLloydDavies
      @VirginiaLloydDavies  6 лет назад +1

      Good question, Lydia. I've done everything you mentioned. If you google lotus images, you should see lots of different angles of leaves: water lily leaves are flat plates, but lotus leaves bend and fold gracefully above the water, lending themselves to paintings. Try simple ones first. Good luck!

    • @colourinmyrainbow
      @colourinmyrainbow 6 лет назад

      Thank you so much for this response! I am really enjoying your videos and will certainly look up images of the leaves... yes, too much confusion in my mind between lotus leaves and water lilies :-)

    • @VirginiaLloydDavies
      @VirginiaLloydDavies  6 лет назад +1

      Also notice relative sizes: the flowers are much, much smaller than the leaves. For Chinese painters,the flowers are just decoration; it is the boldness of the leaves that tells the story. Make sure you select a big brush and load it with lots of black ink!

      thank you very much for this invaluable information... I will have to find a good source of materials... I am in Vietnam, so it shouldn't be too difficult!

    • @VirginiaLloydDavies
      @VirginiaLloydDavies  6 лет назад

      A couple of good brushes, some raw (unsized) xuan paper and a bottle of Chinese ink will take you far. If there is a painter locally whom you enjoy watching, you may be able to get recommendations for materials from him/her.

    I’m not sure why you’re calling it a ‘leaf’?? But other than that...beautiful! 🖤

      I am painting lotus leaves in this video, that's why I am calling it a 'leaf'. Other than that, no problem!!!!

    • @bobbijolane367
      @bobbijolane367 5 лет назад

      Virginia Lloyd-Davies I see. I didn’t realize they were leaves....being a lotus, I thought they were petals you were painting. I stand corrected. Thank you for the reply. And as I said before...beautiful! 🖤. I have to add that I just now noticed that there is a part 2 to this painting....I think if I had watched that, and saw the lotus ‘flower’, I would’ve understood. If you can’t tell, im not at all familiar with the lotus flower, or the leaves. My apologies.

    • @VirginiaLloydDavies
      @VirginiaLloydDavies  5 лет назад

      The leaves are often painted in shades of black ink, which makes the color of the flowers stand out more. They also look pretty abstract sometimes, so it's not surprising that you might not recognize them for what they are. I'm glad you enjoyed them, regardless of what you thought they were! I've enjoyed our conversation!
