The reason we don't stop shoplifters is that clerks and cashiers should not be asked to risk their lives to protect property- they are not trained security persons and they are not armed and often the deranged criminal thief is armed and or delusional/on drugs. This guy could have lost his job for endangering himself coworkers and customers by escalating the crime of shoplifting into something truly deadly.
