Awww, at 7:15, "a few crackles, someone's not gunna like that". Prescient and sweet at the same time.😋
Their follow up album, "Shoot Out At the Fantasy Factory" is just as good, and one of my favourite road-trip CDs is "On The Road", a live album with extended cuts of studio tracks.

One of my favorite groups of the era! Just a fantastic group of players and mix of a proper amount of Folk, Jazz, Rock and a touch of Soul. A true Rock and Roll Stew…

Glad you enjoy Traffic and appreciate their cool grooves. Remember to have a look at the 1994 live at Woodstock video, it’s here on RUclips, it will not disappoint and that’s a promise.
Hopefully, you get to review their album When The Eagle Flies, too…….some beauty’s on that. 😉

You’ve really gone all Cinematic with your intro! That deserved a capital ‘C’.
Ps… you might have a rare collectors’ album!
Pss… also check on the labels if the cover is perhaps US and maybe the album is U.K.?

This is a great album. Smooth, jazzy, organic and rockin'. Love the music from this era.
I am enjoying most of your listening enjoyment. Keep it up my good man.

Traffic wasn’t that well known in the Netherlands. I know Steve Winwood from Blind Faith, Go (Stomu Yamashta) and from his solo career hit songs; almost five decades ago.
I learned about Traffic several decades later. I love Traffic.
The song order of this album, Wikipedia and my album, probably is:
    Hidden treasure
The low spark of high heeled boys
Light up or leave me alone
    Rock and roll stew
    Many a mile to freedom
    Rainmaker.
Today I’ve listened to the previous album, Latent Avidity by Retrospective. It’s very good; I’m becoming a fan of them.

The next album, "Shoot Out At The Fantasy Factory" would be an ideal choice to follow this one. The first Steve Winwood album (which one of your listeners sold to you according to the comments) is also fantastic and doesn't get as much love as some of his more commercial material. You could put that right.

Jim, you picked up on the extra percussion on this album as compared to John Barleycorn (courtesy of Rebop Kwaku Baah.) Other bands like Santana had obviously paved the way for that kind of thing in rock music, but it was a big part of the Traffic sound on this and the next album. There's a live video from this tour you can find online where you see how they put it all into action. "Rock and Roll Stew" reminds me of early Steely Dan, so maybe that's a reason this album did better in the states than the UK. But it's a great album, IMO. Not a bad track on it, with the title song a bonafide classic. It's definitely Jim Capaldi's peak as a singer with Traffic. It's why Jim Gordon was hired, so that JC could spend more time up front. As for what Traffic album to do next I'd go back to the s/t release from 1968 so that you can hear some of Dave Mason's contributions before he left. From there the albums become more uneven (and psychedelic if you go back to the debut), so proceed with caution.

Just shows that you don’t have to play at 10000 notes per second to be a master musician. It’s probably too laid back and languid for those with the attention span of a goldfish but that’s their loss.
Personally, and whoops controversy…i really love those pre-synth Proggy albums. No boring washes of simulated strings to hide behind. Pure music, pure pleasure.
Btw, another suggestion for you Jim…have you heard Quintessence? Fab band based in Notting Hill in late 60s-early 70s. Also on Island label with Traffic…also had a flute player…also jammed at length. I was reminded of them as both Traffic and Quintessence played at the 1971 Glasto Festival and are in the movie of the event (which naturally you should watch if you haven’t already) 👍

Mmmm groooooovy.... I had to buy the triple album set from Riverside yesterday Jim....I couldn't resist despite lacking funds. ID.Entity has made of me a full on fan. It's that box set of their first 3 albums with 6 discs of stuff....I love the new album so much I checked out their tour...and no London dates😔
Anyway this album is so bright.....together we float like a river.....mmmmmmmm.....yeaaah....🏖️🩴🩴🩴⛱️🌴🏝️.....😎

I don't have a means to play physical media, and can't afford digital downloads, but I'm with you. My listen of ID.Entity with Jim prompted me to get a ticket to Riverside's Seattle show, after reaching out to the venue to see what they can do to make this 63 year old immunocompromised leukemia patient comfortable in a venue that doesn't enforce masking or social distancing. After a few emails back and forth, I'll be attending my first theater show, including movies, since lockdown to see Riverside live.

@@IllumeEltanin nice one! I'm sure it will be fine. I'd love to see Riverside but can't travel too far and attend gig same time....One thing I have noticed is at gigs I first attended is the heavier the band, the nicer the fans! If I had any problems with my conditions in gig and said something the Opeth fans were the least annoying....one guy stopped vaping after I simply asked him not to. No fuss.😇

Great album but I wonder if the reason it didn't chart in the UK was that it wasn't the sound of the 70s (despite the release date) but still very much the sound of 1967-69 in a lot of ways. Difficult to tell at this remove but track 1 side 1, the congas, some of the guitar tones and this style of flute would have sounded dated by 1971, I would have thought. I'll say again though - great album.

They didn’t get the track list wrong on the cover of my copy (US release), you obviously have what is probably considered a rare collectable, curios to know if the tracks are listed correctly on the record labels. This was the bands most successful album (from a sales perspective) released in the US even though "John Barleycorn Must Die" landed higher in the charts.
