These XMP files have been driving me crazy. I really can't thank you enough for this great explanation of them!
I would say .xmp freak people out more than anything I have ever seen. So funny.
Great video. I really understand now what .XMP files are I was always confused before. Quick question, I added stars to my photos inFastRawViewer and/or PhotoMechanic and it created .XMP files to those photos folders but it seems it created a catalog automatically when I open them in Lightroom. Is that the case so every time there is an XMP next to a photo Lightroom makes a catalog out of that folder?
Well explained, thank you!
Thanks,
Thanks. I was wondering what that file was for.
Very well done. Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
So if a friend wants to look at one of my edited images and work on it. Do I need to email him the image and the .xmp file so he has it in front of him showing what I have done so far?
Yes, if you send the raw file, and the work was done in lightroom or adobe camera raw
I accidently deleted all my photos from LR however when i closed the window, i decided not to backup. My RAW files are partnered with an XMP file so i think my settings are still there however how do i link my hundreds of photos with its proper XMP file?
It sounds like you deleted the images from the catalog not the actual images. The.xmp automatically links to the appropriate file. Do not rename. There really isn’t anything to do unless you want to re-import the images back into Lightroom
@@Jcwphoto I understand i have the RAW images but i noticed that my XMP file was outdated and did not match my latest edits. I just didnt want to redo all the edits on the images but luckily i had already exported my Jpegs so ill be turning those in to the client. Just wish i had those edits saved so in case they wanted minor changes like hair removal etc.
Dear, I made something wrong. In the proprieties of all xmp files I selected photoshop program. Witch program should I chose ?
Well what do you want to do?
@@Jcwphoto I want to import those files in camera raw...... but in proprieties I changed the program to open them. They are photoshop files. But witch is the right program?
@@sottosopra4769 to import you should use Bridge. If you mean open in raw you can use bridge or just open using Photoshop if it is a raw file. It will automatically open open in raw
@@Jcwphoto Thanks... I will try but they are not raw files but xmp files (color profiles)
I am looking to export files out of my Lightroom CC. I would like to keep the raw and settings om an external hard drive. Is the xmp file only associated with Adobe?
No but depends on the program
Also you can’t export to raw. You would manually have to move the files
nice video. My jpegs I sent out to a friend are opening in camera raw. Is the Xmp file inside the jpeg itself? its only 2 images doing this.
No xmp is only for raw. However, a jpg can save metadata inside the file.
How do I make them not appear? I used to have the Nikon D850 and the xmp files never appeared. Now I have another Nikon camera and everytime I make a change on a photo, the xmp file appears on that photo file, making me crazy. Do I have to configure something on the camera? I don't want to see them for they confuse me. What are your thoughts?
They appear because you are shooting NEF files. When you make an adjustment it stores the information there. This is a good thing. If you do not want to see them convert your files to .dng that stores the .xmp interally.
@@Jcwphoto I understand, I've been using Nikon Nef files since ever. They did not appear on my files before. Now they do. I don't want that. Something changed.
@@hotelphotography Nothing changed. The .xmp will only appear when you change something to add meta data
@@Jcwphoto Sorry, but I did not see them anywhere with my D850 or D750. And I used those 2 cameras for at least 4 years each. Anyway, thanks.
They would not be on your image capture. Or if you shot .jpg files Here is a blog on .xmp. johnwhiteheadimages.com/2023/03/03/xmp-file/
what does it mean when a cr2 file was change to an XMP file??
The .cr2 file does not change. It just creates a .xmp to to adjustments or metadata. Everything thing is don’t worry about it.
All my photo raw files are being converted to XMP files. I'm not doing this. If I click on a file I get a mesage to buy an app from the Microsoft store to open the file. Photoshop can't open them. I need to convert them back and prevent this from happening them again. Most of these files have been edited once in Lightroom or Photoshop, or both, and they were PNG files. This is a new problem. I've used this computer and Photoshop/Lightroom for over three years, and these (*^*&)(&%%& xmp files started popping up about two months ago.
That is not possible. It is adding sidecar .xmp files when you make the adjustments as it should. You don't open .xmp files just the raw images. They should be in the same folder. Order by name should show you the raw file then the .xmp and so on.
OK. Thanks for the reply. The xmp files just recently started showing up, and I'm not finding the raw or Photoshop dng files. I'll look around and see if I can find them in the original shoot dates.
Thanks for the great explanation. Can you explain the best DNG format settings to use when converting a raw file to DNG in order to embed the .XMP data into the DNG file?
Just switch to .dng. Most .dng files embed all data inside the file. Which program are you using?
I use Photoshop 2023 camera raw to convert to .dng
Clients often want raw files but they'll will disassociate the .xmp file so my copyright metadata will be lost and the photo might become public domain and be stolen. DNG seems like a great alternative because the metadata becomes part of the file rather than a sidecar.
@@paulspinelli245 state in your contract they must add copyright to metadata.
@@Jcwphoto Thanks for the suggestion. Which Photoshop "Format" boxes should be checked for .DNG files: 1) Embed Fast Load Data; 2) Use Lossy Compression, and/or 3) Embed Original File?
All I wanted was for you to show me how not to see the XMP files when I open a folder
It was in there. Just use .DNG
