    Nice and clean, not the case with mine. How do you handle stuck gaskets that come off in pieces without scratching or gouging the metal?

    I noticed on the linkages, some people with the same carb have a little notch on the throttle side, so when it accelerates that notch pushes the choke linkage upwards. Not sure if it's necessary or not but I wonder why some have one and some dont.

    Is this something a novice with little engine/carb experience could do? My merc 3.0L carb may need to be rebuilt and was thinking of doing it myself.

    My Choke plate is kind of stuck and its sometime hard to move when its close most of the part. Is there anyway or how I can clean that to make it run smooth? BTW, its not able to close all the way, not sure it suppose to be the way it is?

    • @MikesCarburetor

      You should remove the carburetor and take the choke valve out for a good cleaning. At the same time look around for a part that might be causing it to bind. Remove the linkage and see if the valve sticks without it.

    Would a can of carb cleaner work or is the dip better for cleaning? Mine isnt horribly dirty but my engine is running rough and figured I would try cleanig carb and hate to loose the paint on it.

    You need a 8 mm wide screwdriver for those jets(both have 145s in 2 mercarbs i'm cleaning now); no ,ere ,no less,MUST be 8 mm; grind down one,or go buy,borrow,steal... 8 mm.
    did i say 8 mm ,already? more,and it won't fit; less and you'll make those (soft brass)jets look like shtt,whether you're able to remove them (to clean them--with --soft---copper wire strands!) or not;
    and yes, i have seen them with so much varnish and white powder in the orifice,that the size goes down to 125 (that's 1.25 mm) before cleaning; that means LEAN combustion at full throttle,and that means bad news for those pistons!!!

    Can you buy just the linkage? Mine had a threaded barrel type deal where the throttle cable attached and some idiot (me) over-tightened it and broke it off. I currently have a rebuild kit with brass floats and choke kit in my cart from your place.

    Hey Mike, the "main jet" (brass) is disintegrating instead of unscrewing. Any tips to remove it safely? I know you said there's a new one included in the kit but I need to get the old one out first!

      Never mind, I got it. (Combination of locking pliers and 3/8" flat screwdriver.) But I'm sure glad I'm not reusing the old trashed one!

    Hey mike is there any place to get the air mixture screw? The carb on the boat that my son bought is missing and probably why it’s not running for crap. It’s a mercarb

    Thank you so much for your video it is very detailed and helpful. Quick question the "power piston" is stuck solid. No movement at all, I used the All as you demonstrated and nothing. I mean it is frozen solid. I tried a little bolt buster to see if it would lose it up nothing... so I went ahead and have it in the chem dip overnight and will try again in the morning to see if it broke it free. I saw your video on heating the housing like the Roch will that work on this model Merc? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again

      @@MikesCarburetor Berryman's has worked well for me. Can be bought in a 16 ounce can for general cleaning; but the gallon can, with the included strainer, is best for dipping. I'm not a professional; just a home/farm mechanic; so your validation or exhortation on this would be appreciated. I'll try the Simple Green, too. Thanks for the outstanding video and advisement. :)

    HI. yesterday i water tested a searay 185 sport with a mercarb on a 4.3 that i just went through. it ran for about 3 minutes then lost power and stalled. looking down into the throat of the carb you can see fuel dripping out of the venturis. during assemblu i checked the float level and it meaured pretty close to the chart. so i dont know if its a float problem causing it to flood, or if there is something else going on. any ides? thanks.

      Well,Mercruiser did a number on us,on some they put a STEEL gas line from pump to the carb.; it RUSTS baddly inside ,and the rust goes thru the inlet screen at the carb's entrance(no filter there)and keeps the needle open; if you hit the carb with a RUBBER mallet while the engine is idling and fuel is flooding down the intake,it will stop,but tomorrow it will do it again; you need to clean the STEEL pipe inside; run a wire,(thick electrical wire with frayed end,strands opened, flexible speedometer cable ,etc) and you'll see what comes out; everytime it sits empty,it will rust; (it's illegal and dangerous to replace it with a rubber line,never do that in a gas boat).
