Looks like there is a new model for $100 less that still has RX 6800M graphics, but now with higher tier Ryzen 9 5980HX CPU and a 1440p screen: bestbuy.7tiv.net/x9QPyy
It's sold out
Waiting for it to go back on sale
I see all these reviews and i cant choose a laptop, i am considering the advantage edition for now, what would you recommend in the 1600 dollar range, what do you think i should buy? (i use my laptop also as a desktop pc when i game)
Heads up, I believe that the 1440p model has a lower refresh rate than the 1080p model.
@@Anagusame it’s 165z
It's funny to me that all the reviewers seem disappointed about the lack of a camera, and I can understand why but personally I view this as a huge plus
What?
@@StrengthScholar0 laptop webcams are dogshit and you can literally get a portable, better webcam for like 30 bucks.
@@somedudeontheinterwebs45
I just don't understand how not having something is a good thing. I don't really care either way but I'm a bit confused why you would define it as a HUGE plus.
@@StrengthScholar0 not having herpes is a good thing =p
In all seriousness, webcams bump up the cost of laptops by more than you'd think. Not having one means more focus on other parts of the laptop so that you can reach a lower price point.
@@somedudeontheinterwebs45
😂 that's a fair point.
The most compelling reason here is that you get 3080 performance at a fraction of the cost. It's a no brainer. And the memory is upgradable unlike the zephyrus models. All the 3080 laptops cost 3K but you can buy these for 1.5k - amazing. AMD fo life
Is this better or Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 GA503QR
Can u use thunderbolt with a 3080 with this laptop even tho it's amd
@@AminAshrafi84 yeah
you can change the ram on many zephyrus models too but i agree the rx 6800m is such a steal
3070 130W or 140W kinda beats it tho
Man's straight up the most underrated and (imo) one of the best reviewers on YT. Killing it, Jarrod!
+1
Agree!
He is excellent, no doubt. Regarding this laptop I would love to see it in the 17" version, which is supposed to be released in 3Q. I could not wait and got the G17 Scar version with 3070. Really like the Asus laptops with Ryzen hardware.
Jarrod is my one stop solution for laptop guide. I don't see other reviewers apart from Jarrod and Hardware unboxed.
How to use dedicated graphics instead of integrated while connecting an external display with HDMI port???
I liked this video due to the fact that this is the only video online where the LED ribbons are shown still attached and where it actually connects. God bless this upload! Have the G713QR and this should be similar if not the same arrangement.
Your reviews are literally the most informative. Thank you
Very very informative and detialed review as usual, literally the only laptop review who actually knows what he is talking about! You are way too underrated.
Hi Jarrod! Loving the content and keep up the great work. What USB-C to DP cable and monitor did you use to bypass the iGPU and do you get a Display connection limited message? That's what I'm getting but I still see increased FPS. I also upgraded the memory to dual rank modules and see the same increases you get.
I really love your videos. You have given a cool idea about most of the doubts I had in my mind so far. One more thing though which would really help if you could do. Can you make a video comparing Asus A51 vs Strix G15 vs Zephyrus G15 2021 mode with RTX 3060? It would be really helpful for the people who ate confused among these three thinking of which one to buy like me!
This is the only video on the last amd advantage laptops with a section covering Linux support. Thank you.
Although I'm not sure about that keyboard problem 7_7
Great review. And honestly this is a great laptop. Wish they put in the mux switch, but even without it the value is pretty good for what you get.
your the best reviewer who provides the most accurate reviews and mentions everypoint thanks a lot
I was disappointed to see you didn't keep the Metabox Prime-X as reference in the performance comparison section though I suppose it is a DTR rather than a gaming laptop - Any plans to test the MSI GE76 with the new generation 11980HK chip set? I'd be super interested to see how those two compare! Thanks for your videos as always Jarrod, super clean reviews!
Thanks for another awesome review Jarrod. Do you have the Alienware X17 lined up for review? Would love to hear your thoughts on the Asus S17 also.
My Strix G15 Ryzen 5800H and RTX 3060 just got delivered. It's amazing how fast these compact mahines have become. Also the Rog Strix G series chassis for 2021 are amazing. Beautiful and Effective. I can only imagine how good this all AMD machines would be performing.
Is the screen quality good? It's nice to ask someone who already own that laptop for I am planning on buying the same...i like the legion 5 pro better but the availability of that machine here in my country sucks
How is it on gaming
So my 2013 MacBook Pro is dying (already replaced battery once) and I’m thinking of upgrading to a 3080 model of asus laptop (want to go back to windows as well). How has your laptop been holding up? Do you think it’s been worth it?
Um does ur laptop have RTX 3060 with 80W Tgp?

Amazing video! I just bought this laptop, i'm waiting for it to arrive. Thank you so much for all the explanaions. I've got 1 doubt. Does the HDMI conncets directly to the GPU like the Usb-C? Thanks!!
That boot sound reminded me of what starting up a GameCube used to feel like, so definite plus for me 😁
Hi Jarrod. Your reviews are awesome. I'm currently considering buying this ASUS ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition with a 64GB RAM and 1TB configuration from Amazon. But, also the new 2022 ASUS ROG Strix Scar 15 with i9-12900H and RTX3070Ti 150W seems to be a good option. What would be your recomendation between this two? Thanks.
Lovely bro was really expecting this 🔥
If anyone has heard about the reboots during sleep issues this laptop has had (I had this too), my issue was finally solved by the 316 BIOS update! So don't worry about those issues!
you sure the issue is fixed no problems at all I want to buy this laptop but the rebooting problem kept me away
BTW in Armory Crate manual when you overclock, if you push the CPU to the max I think you are reducing GPU wattage. To maximize GPU performance you want to reduce CPU watts to about 45 I think leaving 145 watts for GPU. This is how I understand the settings.
Got this laptop after your first review Jarrod. I only had it for a week but I definitely love it as a upgrade over my scar II. It’s hard for me to believe the power of this laptop no more turning down settings
Do you experience wifi problems ?
had mine for a month but its crap kept shutting down returned it for a 3070 version
@@samuelkdu I believe it's some kind of defect products, I chose 6800m than 3070 way better

I am actually interested in these mobile GPUs from AMD, are you going to review the AMD advantage Omen 16 when it releases?
This video won you my sub!!I can't believe it that you and your channel never came on my radar. Prolly you're the best reviewer on RUclips. Keep it up man!!!
Hi Jarrod! Any ideas on how the Linux compatibility is once installed? I'm mostly concerned wrt battery life and heat!
Also, are the refresh rates and performance profiles suppoerted in Linux?
Seing Linux support in description brought me joy thank you Jarred.
PLS USE POP OS INSTEAD OF UBUNTU on a gaming machine as it's gaming ready out of the box.
For anyone looking for a XMG,Eluktronics or PC Specialist option XMG did confirm that they won't have any Radeon 6000M models this year. This could be entirely localised to XMG but it's more likely there just isn't going to be a AMD X AMD chassis from Tongfang this year
Great review as usual. When doing these reviews you should include if doing surround sound passthrough is possible when using the HDMI cable. I got this laptop and found out it was not possible and it was so infuriating. There is absolutely no way to find this out before buying the thing. I suspect is because the HDMI port does not connect directly to the GPU. Which is so stupid
You should be able to get it via display port on the right, though
mine is,
I like that it has 2 m.2 slots and half the memory is not soldered on like a lot of laptops these days.
im looking in the next week to purchase this laptop. i am excited and cant wait to play on it. i currently have a HP Gaming 15. it alright but i want something I know could handle anything i put it against.
I returned mine. Don't know if I had a defective model but plugging in an 1440p monitir via usb-c, turning on turbo and playing a modern game with max graphic would cause it to over heat and get massive frame drops. Works fine at 1080p still a lil on the warm side tho.
Eyy been waiting for this one
Nice video @Jarrod'sTech, will you test the new technology from AMD? the FSR , if you test it, I would like that you make a video about that and how that increase in fps with RX 6800M
So Jarrod, at this point I have watched pretty much every video, and it seems like this one would be my best choice.. I still use the ROG STRIX GL502VMK from 2016 and it has served me well, but it's time for something new.. My budget is 1300$ and I have seen that BestBuy had this on sale for roughly just that. Before I make my final decision, please be so kind to drop another name or two that I should look at closer, just what you would personally recommend. Appreciate the work you do! Thank you
I enjoy the boot sound very much. As a matter of fact, Apple brought their startup chime back last year after they removed it in 2016. Windows 11 also has a startup sound, which plays just before the login screen appears. So, safe to say, a whole lot of people love than hate it!!
Please do MSI GE76, Asus M16 and Asus Scar 15/17 reviews, whichever posssible
Eagerly awaiting the review on the Zephyrus S17 gx703

I have a request. I am a noob when it comes to hardware.
I know you put it in the description on what RAM it is to upgrade the G-15 advantage but I’m finding it very hard to find them online as I have no clue about speeds nor does vendor’s give the information on X 16 or x 8.
Your link has one unit left on Amazon and I obviously need two 8 gb chips. Could you give me a hint on what to look for in a description to upgrade my ram on my g15 advantage.
Help a noob out please 🙏
Sad that the standard Ram makes this machine so much worse than it should be. Good for AMD that they finally can compete with the highest end Nvidia Laptops tho.
Every brand has this issue, not just Asus. Mainly due to cost and supply.

Hi and thnx for an exelent review. I'm considering buying this machine or buying the more expensive MSI GP76 Leopard with a 3080 8gb gpu.
In this test it seems like they at least can compete performance vise but.. What about when you take Nvidia DLSS in account? Then the 3080 should leave the 3600m in the dust, right?
And are you able to drive a high refreshrate (240 hz, 1440p) external monitor via the usb C connector that u suggests in this video? It has enough bandwidth for that? And how does that work? You convert it into a displayport cable?
Your review machine seems fine, but users who've purchased it seem to be having dead GPU issues, to judge by store reviews. I'm wondering how the liquid metal application looks. Any plans on doing an in depth inspection of the internals in the future?
One thing I think you should've pointed is out is despite the high temps, Thermals do not throttle. It's wild. Even when my CPU was 95c, it was still running at 4.5GHZ. Even when my GPU was 80c, it was still around 2568MHZ in games. NVIDIA GPus don't do that. They lower heavily as temps raise. For example, you could lose 10% performance going from 65c to 80c in a NVIDIA graphics card.
my 3080(Desktop), runs at 2040MHZ up until around 66c, then goes down to around 1980Mhz. As it rises beyond 72c, it'll hit 1925hz, and beyond 80c, it'll start going to around 1890.
Doesn't throttle, would that affect longevity of the laptop
I can't wait to see how much this is going to cost here in UK, and how is going to compare to Legion 5 (non pro) with 5800H and RTX 3070 which at the moment retails for £1300 and can be had for as low as £1250

is this laptop still good in 2022?or would you recommended something else jarrod?
I received my Asus rog strix advantage today and the set up and my software and app load up was a dream really enjoying the experience and cant wait to run my dj Serato software on it
Are you happy with this laptop? is there any problem?
Awesome review as per usual
Thank you so much for talking about the Linux compatibility 😁
My pleasure!
Awesome review! Actually pushed me to buy one, however I just wanted to mention an issue I found with mine. The Asus "Armoury Crate" software was forcing the 6800M into extreme power saving mode and so it was running horribly. I had to uninstall armoury crate to fix it but I was wondering if you had any similar issues arise?
I haven't had that issue with Armoury Crate. Were you running on battery? I know it does try to force a lower performance profile when you first unplug.
Thanks @JarrodsTech for updating us with the newer CPU version as i was about to buy the older one, did you have the chance to test this laptop with maximum 64GB ram ? Keep up the great work 👍🏻Greetings from Dubai fans🎉
Thank you a lot for sharing this 🙏🏻
Tho I have one more Q
Does the strix g15/g17 with rtx 3070/3060 comes with the better ram
Or they have the same ram as the advantage Edition? 😶
Great review man!!😊
Can you review acer swift X?
AMD doing significantly better in the past couple years.
I do wish they had an actually competitive hardware encoder to rival nvenc. Streamers and video editors and video recorders are forced to use nvidia at the moment
"Forced".. Doesn't matter if they have a competitor to NVenc when they don't have the software to back it.
They can use other hardware encoders
Any chance MSI will release an 6800M + Ryzen 5900X laptop soon? Having switched from MSI to ROG few years ago, I miss the "feeling" of MSI and want to switch back.

Hi Jarrod and thx for the reviews, very thorough and professional.
I was wondering if you ever tried to review cooling pads?
I am looking at buying a Klim cool+ cooling vacuum, it's a bit different than normal cooling systems as it's based on suction rather than air blowing. Is it actually worth to have and is it worth setting it up along with a regular cooling pad? Looking forward to your answer and why not a video review on it!

Its bad?
I found this laptop to be available in Germany from October ( or end of September ) for somewhere between €1500 and €1700. Is it worth buying it or should I wait for something else? I really like this laptop and the price to performance.
Hi Jarrod, do you think it would be possible for you to do a review of the new Thinkpad P1 G4?
I know it would be difficult since this channel is mostly dedicated to gaming laptops, but I think it would be interesting to see you doing thermal analysis of this type of machines (Workstation), in my opinion you are the best reviewer when it comes to temperature and performance analysis. Thank you very much for all your content.
I'm not sure, Lenovo has been hard to get stuff from lately but I've also been trying to focus in on gaming laptop reviews and not sure if they'd be able to get that model.

Thanks for including both stock and new ram avg fps in games, I feel like this issue needs more attention. It’s just disappointing to see no mux switch and poor stock ram gimping the system. All that hype, for what?
For a laptop with lower price than 3070 and power rivaling 3080, I would say that the hype is worth it. If they give an option to upgrade that would be better, but i guess we have to do that part.

Frankly I'm not sure why anyone games on their laptop screen anyway. At least enough for it to matter. When I'm at home I'm on two external monitors and I turn off the laptop monitor. If I'm taking the laptop with me somewhere, it's usually to hang out with someone else who either doesn't game, or who also has an external monitor if we do. If you want to be safe, you can replace the liquid metal with thermal paste.

I'm looking for what msi will do with the all and setup.
Should I go for this laptop now or wait for the upcoming ones? And are the ram issues on this that severe?
very interesting but with some flaws that keep me waiting for other laptops with 6800M graphics, hopefully.
I really want to like and keep this laptop as my daily driver, but it has a weird quirk when using Autodesk Fusion 360, I'm guessing some driver issues with the Radeon GPU. My old MSI with core i7 8th gen and GTX1060 has no issues with Fusion 360. And I'm noticing that it can randomly restart itself e.g. when woken up from sleep, all my apps and windows disappeared.
I always turn sleep off anyway....I am either running my pc fully or turning it off, which I really only do on my laptops when taking somewhere, I keep my desktop on 24/7 except for upgrades...I had the same problem with another pc and turning off the sleep mode fixed it but I believe the real problem is in a driver or the programming code....might help to run a good windows optimizer on it that fixes windows problems
I find it odd that the FreeSync range doesn't go below 60 Hz. Isn't that a key selling point of variable refresh rate - to reduce input lag and stutter when performance drops below 60 fps?
good point
I got it on release day and it is pretty awesome . Im using it to dual mine Zilliqa and ETC right now @45MH haha
Finally, some Linux testing on this G15. Anyway, does this need some proprietary graphics support, or Linux already have some Radeon RX 6000 M drivers, tho?
