Asus ROG Strix G15 review - a gaming powerhouse? 300Hz panel and RTX 3070. Nice. (2021 model)

- Опубликовано: 26 сен 2024
- This is a review of the Asus ROG Strix G15, the 2021 model which includes a number of interesting features such a design enhancements, a larger trackpad, a bigger screen to body ratio and much an awesome spec too.
There are various models available, this is the G513. Which includes a 300Hz refresh rate, 1080p IPS panel with a 3 ms response time. And Nvidia RTX 3070 Max Q GPU and a Ryzen 7 5800H CPU.
Highlights are:
A beautiful screen with a fast refresh rate, vivid colours and great colour profiles
Powerful specs capable of running games at high frames
Connectivity to connect other monitors and still power them well (I used a Samsung Odyssey G7 32-inch and got great results)
A comfortable keyboard
On the fly adjustment for fan speed and RGB lighting
Quiet cooling under standard use and even under heavy load it's not massively taxing
Doesn't get super hot when gaming on the lap
Eye care screen adjustment is great for working
Battery power gives you about 5-6 hours of use
Even when on battery you can game with decent frames (I got 30-60FPS on Rainbow Six on battery) and you can play for upto an hour.
Lowlights:
Lacks USB ports
Lacks DisplayPort out except via USB-C
No webcam
Benchmarks:
Dirt 5:
Max settings = 60-70 FPS
Automatic scaling = 90-120FPS
Max settings on 1440P 32 inch Samsung G7 = 50-60 FPS
Assassin's Creed Odyssey:
Max settings on G7 = 70-80FPS
Temps got to 83 degrees on CPU same on GPU even with fans on max
HDR on there too!
Rainbow Six Siege:
Max settings on G7 = 180-200 FPS!

I’ve just got the 3080 rtx model with the 1440p panel.. and I LOVE that they removed the webcam. It’s a pure gaming laptop. I’d never use the webcam and now I don’t have to worry about keeping it covered, and the screen bezels are nice and thin.
Fair enough
@@TheProvokedPrawn The laptop cost $2,700 usd. So it should go without saying that these beasts are meant to be desktop replacements. I know it’s difficult to find flaws in this beauty so the lack of a webcam makes for easy pickings. But depending on your use case, could be a pro. Thanks for your thorough reviews Prawn!
I cover the camera on my current laptop as well. Don’t need it.
Does the screen bend at all? Can I close the lid with one hand?
@@birdy100 there is slight give to the screen if forced.. but definitely not flimsy like most laptops.. YES, this laptop can be opened with on hand. I would state that the best way to open with one hand is to do so from the middle to apply equal opening force, but from a corner is possible as well. I just don’t know how durable that’ll last. I use the laptop 99% of the time connected to an external screen with the lid closed..
Thanks for the review! I just bought one... I am gob-smacked at how fast it is, the quality of the screen and colours is great. As with all installations, you run windows update, then wait for hours while this happens... Not on this machine... the download bars were whizzing by and the whole installation was done without a single glitch. After installing all apps, (Office 365 and Creative Suite) and thousands of image files and documents, then synchronizing one-drive and having a play around... I still had 4 hours battery left.
Thank you for this review, this helped me make my mind and go for this.

how's the thermal up to now? can you share?
@@TMVGamingOfficial well i did have some issues with the temperature at the start 90+ c ish, but i lowered the power usage and upped the fan speed in the armoury crate so that it falls within the more acceptable range.
@@PadecMaybeReal by what settings and the final temp? And is there any other problems with the laptop?
@@TMVGamingOfficial i just lowered the power from 80W default to 50W, final temperature dropped to 78 to 90+ C but it quickly drops back down to the 80s because of the fan speed.
Hey, how's the keyboard? Is it mushy? How the key travel? I tend to type a lot, while on the move, so I wanted to check this.

70c to 80c is actually very good gaming temperature for a laptop. Anything below 85 is actually good.
Great video, thank you for this! I just bought this laptop but with the 3060 (only model available) - while performance will likely vary (I'm new to PC / laptop gaming) based on what I've seen online, this made me feel even more confident in my purchase.

@@jamesp5923 I heard it could be updated with msi bios with increase to 125 watt
lol, i was coming down here to say that too, lol
how do you know?
Interesting, I noticed at 2:24 the back of the laptop has the roman numerals MMVI on the left side which is 2006. I looked it up and that was the first year of the ROG line of products. Little easter egg there.
woah, that's observant. I didn't even notice. Respect to you sir.
Hiyaah plot twist
Girl what
SAMW
Finally someone spotted it!
I’ve had this one for a few weeks now and driving an LG 38” ultragear through the usb-c -> DP adapter. Couldn’t be happier for both productivity and gaming (my primary reason for purchase). 32G with 130w 3070. Runs just about any game I throw at it. Not a desktop, of course, but daaaamn good gaming laptop. Also running a Reverb G2 with ease, although haven’t tested many VR titles yet, to be fair. NOTE: you have to run your video signal through the usb-c to bypass the iGPU and plug directly into the dGPU. Get yourself an adapter, and you’re all set.
How’s the cooling and how hot does it get? Im thinking about getting one
@@luck0158 Cooling seems good, doesn’t get hot, but it does get pretty warm like most gaming laptops. Fan noise isn’t obnoxious while pushing the GPU. Put it this way, it’s never been a thought to me. I do have it sitting on my desk on an elevated cooling pad.
This laptop has the Max-P, which is insane
This is the perfect Strix G15 review I've found. Loved it.

Everyone talks about how loud the fans are on the g15 and g17. I have the 17' version with the 5900hx, RTX 3060 and the fans are quiet. In fact, it's one of the quietest laptops I have owned.
ordered this for school and 3d purposes cant wait
something interesting on the backside the vent for the heat, the plastic is shaped XXVI - which in roman numerical is 2006, which is the year the Asus ROG devision was founded :)
Yeah someone else pointed that out too.
A very well made video , keep up the good work mate !
The most pleasant review I ever heard and saw so far, really nice and warm

I bought this, box and all (slightly used) for $600 from an acquaintance. I think I got a HELL of a deal, he got another laptop and i guess they gave him a better one for 700 at the store for some reason, i have no idea why, but I mean God damn, I definitely got a good deal
woah. That is a deal.
I’m upgrading to this from my old 1060 MSI laptop in a couple weeks for my last year of school. Gonna need to buy a camera for it lol but totally worth it
Thanks for the review. We both have the same systems, except for the keyboard. Thanks to you, I learned about the mobile app and it's been great.
Just a heads up, from experience anyone planning to use this with a monitor I find the usb-c dp is usually integrated to the CPU graphics card not the dedicated the HDMI is usually connected to your dedicated..., Basically with that you can not gsync to a external monitor
Thanks for the heads-up, so does that mean that if i connect it to a 144hz monitor via the HDMI port it won't work?
@@Pr0t0typ33 no you won’t be able to unless you use the USB-c dp
Thanks for the review. Would be nice if you ran synthetic benchmarks and benchmarked more demanding modern titles at ultra settings. You may want to mention the fact that the laptop doesnt have a mux switch which can have a 10-20% performance impact when using the laptop display.
Synthetic benchmarks?

Hi this build on this laptop would be the equivalent to what desktop build performance wise ?
This is my own estimation, so take this with an approximation.
CPU>Desktop Ryzen 5 5600X>slightly better in multi core, but slightly worse when it comes to single core
GPU>This is really hard, but if you are GPU limited, like you are playing maximum settings on a really demanding game like CP2077. I would say it’s roughly equivalent to a desktop RTX 2070 Super, maybe a bit higher, maybe a bit lower. For current gen, between a desktop RTX 3060 and a 3060 ti. Give or take. However, if you are CPU limited, it falls short of what I mentioned.
It’s extremely powerful for a laptop. This probably performs better than a PS5. Also, you have amazing features to boost performance with DLSS.
AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX, 32gbs ram dual channel, RTX 3060 6GB. i plan to buy next 2 months. do u think with this spec it's worth it for a long term? to play the heaviest game with highest graphic can offer like cyberpunk or something? the only thing i'm worried is the heat, kinda worried if it gets too hot or something. if it's good there should be some kind of drawback to it. what do u think?
Did you end up buying it?
it all depends on the price tbh. the 3060 should be good enough for like the next 3 years before it becomes obsolete. if u get a bargain just opt for it

My only concern with this awesome laptop is Optimus. I don't want to pay for gadgets that I cannot utilize fully. I wish they had a mux switch in it.
But on the ones where you disable optimus usually bypass freesync too, which IMO id rather have freesync on the 300mhz screen than a 6-12% fps with screen tear!
@@leebutler9470 yeah you get some, and lose some. This whole curfuffle about multiplexers, Optimus, g sync and now the advanced Optimus is giving me a serious headache! I don't want my laptop battery to last long I just need moar powa baby!
@@LeFatalpotato Me too. After thinking about it I came to conclusion:
1. 120 vs 150 fps doesnt matter to me as both are smooth, freesync helps too
2. 55 vs 60 fps definitely matters, but we are talking about few newest titles on ultra/rtx
3. its all about CPU bottleneck, 3070 is now beast so every game has CPU bottleneck but eventually after newer generations it will get older and become GPU bottleneck, making this issue smaller
