      I get that other people are like "Oh Kimmy is funny" which is true, but she's the titular character. If she wasn't funny or relatable on some level, there would be no show. Titus on the other hand came out of no where and sang to us with the voice of the angels. The actor is a true talent and his character added a level to the show that no one else would have brought.

      As a Japanese and the son of an actual Geisha , i am doubly offended from start to finish, The rendition of the song is disastrous, the cosplaying is disgusting and the cliches are infuriating .
      My mother and grand mother used to sing that lullaby called Takeda no Komoriuta , the lullaby of takeda , Akai Torii when i was a child and hearing it destroyed like this here and turned into a farce is disappointing and saddening .
      here is the original

      @@wdwinfield3271 I have spent some time in Europe when i was a kid and have many friends from Belgium and the Netherlands. All of them grew up with with Zwarte Piet , being just a regular Christmas figure . None of my friends are racist and none of them consider Piet offensive toward black people . My husband finds it offensive , i personally do not feel anything about it, because it doesn't concern me.
      If you do not know who Zwarte Piet is , here is an explanation .
      How do you think African americans would react to this ? And what do you want to do about it ? Change a 500 years old tradition ? It's not going to happen.
      ruclips.net/video/jBqoH-qx-os/видео.html
      But this drag queen impersonating a Geisha at its worst , is not a 500 tradition , and it concerns me directly . So of course o take issue and voice my opinion . I don't mind when things are done in a form of parody , because it is clear from the start that the aim is to make people laugh . But this is not aimed as a parody, this is aimed as a tribute, and yet it is extremely badly executed and performed . How is that not insulting ? Why not use a professional traditional dancer (i couldn't care less of the person's ethnicity) and hire a professional dresser to put the kimono on the right way ?
      Why create a cheap rendition of a Geisha as a form of homage . It makes no sense . You either do it right, or you do it as a comedy or you don't do it at all.

    • @Crux161
      @Crux161 6 лет назад +251

      I get that his pronunciation is off here - but he does _sing_ it well. And to be fair, making the same sounds sing as when talking is wrong, well.... not just wrong but in the words of my jazz ensemble professor *wrong wrong wrong* - you can hear the words in this - and the singing is _beautiful_ - so just let the man sing. I’m not saying black people are the only ones to know this level of hardship - but his very dna speaks to the sadness (of the song) that he’s attempting to portray here. Feudal Japan (from everything we know) was a hard place to survive when you’re poor (or just in general)... there’s a lot of equal footing historically to compare here, which is one of the key points for such an effortless translation of *emotion* going I to this performance. It’s not the end all be all and there are other better performances, but in defense of this version - Hell i loved it.

    I love how the show subverted our expectations. Throughout the whole episode, you'd expect Titus to make a fool out of himself - a terrible, unapologetic and flamboyantly gay African American actor dressed as an 18th century geisha in front of an Asian American audience. You'd think Titus' performance would bomb in a very funny way and get humiliated by his hubris, but the show decided not to play it safe and showed an actual deep and poetic relationship between two cultures, and how they can be bridged through compassion and human kindness. Yup, I cried every time.

    • @hepa00lepa
      @hepa00lepa 6 лет назад +151

      @@yasmin4494 how do you figure? Is that what you are personally scared of?
      Cultural appropriation is not the sharing of culture, it is the appropriation of culture.
      Twisting it into something it never was, exerting your influence as someone deemed better, based purely on your race.
      It's wearing feathers on your head as style, but then choosing to give it the same name and aesthetic as sacred headresses in an oppressed culture.
      Also, it is worth noting that Titus, being black, does not represent a culture that is responsible for racist asain stereotypes as we know them. Black people bear no reslonsibililty for the creation and popularisation of racist stereotypes, because black people have never had the opportunity to do so in contemporary civilisation. It's a genuine appreciation for who and what Mirusaki is that we see through Titus, not an appropriation of japanese culture.

    The fact that Tina Fey had the foresight to make sure that this was performed with as much care and authenticity as possible really makes this show elevated in quality. In any other comedy show (The Office, BBT, Parks n Rec, etc.) the character would get up there and just have a giant cringe fest with a terrible outcome. The show is funny, but the characters are loveable. You root for them, you laugh with them, and you cry with them. I literally cannot hold my tears in at the last phrase.

      It reminds me of grace and frankie. The show thrives on truly BIZARRE plot points which would most likely never happen in real life. However, the characters' reactions to those obstacles are so fundamentally human and understandable that it effectively grounds the entire operation and makes it a touching lesson in humanity. I hope to God that makes as much sense as I think it does in my mind. Titus is a larger than life character, but the way he tackles obstacles creates such a beautiful lesson in humanity.

I get why people are upset over their culture being appropriated with ignorance, but it’s clear that Titus actually relates with and understand the material. If someone can actually resonate and portray an art form accurately, it shouldn’t matter if it’s part of their ancestry, this is a celebration of the culture not a mockery.

    This is the one scene that has stuck with me, just beautifully done. It has made me search into all the beautiful Japanese folk songs and while I may not understand the words the feelings that come through the voices have been amazing.

  • @schwindsichtigaderechte5293

    This is one of the most subtle scenes I've ever seen in any show, I don't know how much of what I found in it was intentional, but to me the following things were all there, it works on so many levels: it's commentary on cultural appropriation, on racism in people with different cultural backgrounds, on social perception and social movements, public communication, afro-american, asian-american, female and lgbt issues, poverty, personal growth and development through self-improvement and a second time through finding a different point of view and through all that, it was still really funny yet emotional. I think this scene is a small masterpiece.

It reminds me of the choice a director can make in A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, to make comically bad the "Rude Mechanicals" play take a sincere turn at the end (like the 1999 film version does, when Sam Rockwell does Thisbe's ending speech).

    The song itself is incredibly moving, and his voice makes it a little more moving, but that’s just my personal opinion.
    You can also tell the crowd was meant to portray Asian-Americans, because in Japan, they actually support the spread of their culture, and enjoy seeing people in Kimono, as long as they are wearing the clothing respectfully.
