  • UPDATE: Read comment from wjb2 below about moving the clutch swing arm too far back. You may accidentally mess up your clutch!
For the adjustment step I mentioned having "a couple quarters width of free-play" but the manual says 2mm, which is a nickel's width, so maybe use a nickel instead.
Couldn't find any videos covering Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Custom clutch cable replacement, so I thought I'd film my replacement to share.
For adjustment steps, skip to 10:00 in the video.

Hi Arlen. Brand new rider as of July 24, 2023. 2002 Vulcan bobber. Clutch cable snapped on the road but was able to get home. With your video, I was able to replace the cable Sat night and was riding the next day. Thank you so much for saving me time and money. I’m officially a grease monkey and I love it! Thanks again!

The inner sleeve of modern cables is made of teflon, to reduce friction. Usually, is not a good idea to apply WD40 to teflon, because it contains some solvents which can be aggressive on teflon and damage it. Maybe, a solvent-less lubricant such as the good ol' Motul MC Care P4 E. Z. Lube, or the WD40 Silicone Lubricant, is preferable. Anyway, super video! 😀👍

Awesome video. My cable snapped on my way home from work. My wife had to help me tow it home. After watching this video I easily replaced mine. Thank you so much for explaining so well.

Brilliant Tutorial! Completed without being stressed out, and with no cussing and fussing.
To Whom it may concern: for clutch lever adjustment: the manual says 2-3 mm's of clutch lever play- a nickel coin is 2 mm, and a quarter is 1.75 mm's. 2 quarters are: 1.75 +1.75 = 3.5.
So I think I will just use a nickel: which is 2 mm's for the adjustment.

good video, but word of warning the actuation arm should not be rotated around as far as you did. As internally you can disengage the internal connection from the clutch push rod. It’s then impossible to get the clutch to work with out dismantling the whole side of the engine. I know i’ve got the tee shirt, my clutch push rod ended up bent.

@@arlenburroughs5014 yeah what I'm riding is a 1998 Kawasaki Vulcan vn800b I'm 62 now have a lot of problems with my hips and knees and feet . I had a 2004 1700 cc Yamaha. it was great on the highways but just a little too much for me to handle in town. Every stop sign every red light anytime I have to stop it's really hard on my feet and knees so I decided I wasn't going to ride anymore .then this sweet little 800 came along and I thought yeah ! maybe I should try it just a lighter bike and it really has worked out. I don't get as sore and it's just easier for me to handle but yeah still the clutch cable replacement was still the same as on your 900. Funny ! sometimes people ask me what my bike is and I tell them it's a 900 Kawasaki hahaha ive had non riderz ask if itz a Harley, beacause the guy i brought it from put alot of aftermarket partz on it, and itz loud so they think its a Harley .😎👌👍L.M.F.A.O.!!!!!

Apparently custom and classic are similar except the exhaust shield on the classic is maybe fatter. The access on my Classic was not quite the same. Just a smidgen tighter.
Enough to make it a miserable job. 🤦‍♂️🤬😂
Next time I’ll remember to remove my front exhaust shield.

I just bought a 900 that looks just like this one. Nice bike btw. But my paperwork doesn't quite say exactly what type of bike I have. People always ask me what it is and I can only say it's a Vulcan 900. I hear of Classics, Customs or this, that and the other...what type is it??? Anybody input would be appreciated

This in video is the custom. The classic and classic LT are the same. The ones with big wheel up front and floor boards. Lt comes with windshield and sissy bar, classic does not. As far as drivetrain all 3 models are ifentical from 06 to current. They just change colors each year. Testimate to how good and reliable of a platform you have and why there are so many aftermarket options. Its a great bike.

You could've saved yourself a lot of time by tying off the new cable to the bottom of the old and let it guide the new cable through. Also, wd40 isn't the best lubricant for cables. They make actual cable lube

Is there not enough movement before you feel "weight" of the clutch lever?
I would try adjusting it so there is 3-4 "quarters" room before you feel clutch weight just to be sure the slipping isn't related to your cable

I can't figure out how it works I bought a new cable and it just won't line up. I hate it so fucking much I would rather rebuild the Motor than play with the clutch cable. I have it on there tight and the bike still won't move when I pull the clutch in

Most all kawi dealers have a "parts finder" tool that is quite handy.
      freedomcycles.dealerspikeparts.com/oemparts/a/kaw/500b52e4f8700223e4796592/cables
Looks like 54011-0069 was the part for my bike.
