We are the knights who say...niiiing!
Also, something I look for in a martial arts school: do they acknowledge, rather than try to dismiss, one's prior experience/existing techniques?
Once, at my previous karate club, it was just me, the instructor, and one other. We were working on the side kick, and the 3rd was doing it the way he'd been taught in Tang Soo Do previously. The instructor then said to him "Okay, so you have your side kick. If you get good at ours as well, you'll have an advantage over us."
It was never "No, forget that, this is how you do it properly!"

    • @ClickClack_Bam
      @ClickClack_Bam Год назад +6

Imo this ALWAYS went REALLY bad with the judo schools I've been to that did this.
You invite other dojos into your dojo & those other dojos end up sending their black belts to recruit STRAIGHT outta your dojo.
Then if it's even picked up on WTF is ACTUALLY going on, things turn into serious fights where it's like this "dojo honor" being defended & throws like "drop morote seoi nage" end up being used & people get hurt & them grudges happen & it's really this HORRIBLY ugly thing starts growing & it envelopes people into it.
This was back in the 90's & early 2000's with me BEFORE the internet & social media was born. I couldn't imagine how bad that would play into things.
Opening up your dojo to other schools in my experience 100% over time ended up this way EXCEPT for when it was a relative of the dojo who had his own school & they were just pretty much mixing it up to add a new flavor here & there.

@@ClickClack_Bam Insightful answer that matches a lot of my experience. Seminars, tournaments and sparring are always between friends, but my teacher had a way of keeping all the classes separate so he could have people matched up as 'badge friends' with the same instructor, but might never have met before. Being invited to his classes in other suburbs meant he really trusted you.

@@ClickClack_Bam My experience in karate & tae kwon do has been exactly the opposite. The visitors have always been incredibly respectful, and we've gone to their schools as visitors we've behaved the same. Any time I've attended any "cross pollination" event the explicit, stated goal is to share knowledge and for BOTH sides to teach and learn. Then again, the schools I've been to generally foster "The only person you should be competing with is yourself." kinds of atmospheres, which tends to discourage people that have something to prove from attending.

Live sparring, pressure testing, are we hitting things, being hit, putting things into practice. 4. Women & Children. If a space has kids and women in it in decent ratios it is unlikely to be hot bed for meat heads. It shows an ability to be open to different kinds of folks and that is not always the case in realms where men hit each other for fun. 5. Rewards dedication. Advancement takes time and people advance in steady but noticiable and predictable ways. That's it. Those are my five. Love your channel. Train hard. Stay safe. Try and be more capable every day.

From my experience; the best thing to look for in a self defense / martial arts school that takes itself seriously is how often do they spar, and how do they spar? Is it a free for all or is the teacher showing a handful of selected techniques this week or month then wanting to see you apply & counter them in sparring against each other? etc. etc. builds more knowledge than whiffing at air!

The competition trophies on display are ridiculous. There is a demo team that knows their stuff. We were able to spend a week with the school before we spent a dime.
All the above made my decision easy. There was evidence of learning, there was evidence of effective techniques, and the classes were very well structured.
That was two years ago and the gym continues to improve. About a month ago, the owner said he wanted to show me something and brought me his phone. It was a McDojo Life video.

What I looked for in a martial arts school, for my kids, was a school where they taught practical self defense techniques with an open mind and where the children were having fun. Why? You may ask. Because any half decent martial arts school can teach the fundamentals. What makes someone successful is that the enjoy it, internalize it, stick with it and feel free to explore different techniques. It worked I chose the Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun school because I watched their classes and while they taught traditional Wing Chun, they also focused on the practical aspects of self defense and made sure that the kids could handle themselves in real self defense situations. My daughter advanced and became the only teenager in the adult class and then went on to train in Krav Maga with a professional bouncer as her sparring partner. My martial arts background is fairly diverse and the instructors allowed me work with them exploring different techniques and from different arts with open minds and without ego, just for the love of the arts. That's the real key to becoming a successful martial artist, love of the arts.

As someone who’s been doing martial arts since Daniel San visited Okinawa, I recommend to people looking for their first school to treat it like buying a new/used car.
Figure out what you want out of it first. Are you after a little city commuter, a people mover for the fam, a sports car, or maybe an off-road vehicle. Then go visit a few schools, have a look around and maybe even take a test drive or two and see if it fits for you.
Some people want that hard intense become a fighter type training and others want some physical activity that’s not running or the gym. Some want striking and sparring whilst others hate the idea of anything coming near their head or just want to roll around on the mats with their kids.

It would be nice if there's a section in the site where you list articles, news, studies etc from all around the world talking about this topic.
There must be things co relating this with delusions in a clinic sense, behaviour analysis crossing this with the Guru/Messias/ForgotTheWordIWantToUse relationship stablished by those who believes in these. Plus, this is a thing all around the world and have been happening since the first martial arts action movie was aired.
Here, we call McDojos that can be translated to Fakejutsu. Usually, they don't go this mystical path, but rather go into the Ninja-Spy agent skill level. There's also the self Titled black belts and gran masters of they own martial arts.
Nowadays you see less and less of these around here, but there are still some popping out in the country side.

What I like to see in a martial arts dojo is the teaching of "self defense" and "self discipline" also since it is "martial arts" the practice of actual teaching the art

YEAH, NEVER FORGET THAT HALF OF "MARTIAL ARTS" IS "ART"
THE SELF DEFENCE APPLICATIONS OF KENDO ARE NONE EXISTENT IN THE MODERN DAY, IT IS STILL A MARTIAL ART NONE THE LESS.
SO I DO THINK THAT QI GONG AND YOGA COULD BE CONSIDERED MARTIAL ARTS, EVEN THOUGH THE MARTIAL SIDE OF BOTH THESE STYLES IS ALMOST UNKNOWN IN THE MODERN DAY, IT DOES NOT MEAN THAT IT DOES NOT EXIST, AND NO PART OF THE WORD ART IMPLIES PRACTICALITY, HENCE IT IS NOT CALLED MARTIAL SCIENCE.

The main thing I look for in a Dojo is respectful discipline, as a kid, I was all about training for the UFC, as an adult, I know a bit more about human biomechanics, so I look for respect from both students and master, and traditionally disciplined sparring. Oh and they gotta be teaching ACTUAL martial arts and not magic! 😂

1.. Truthfulness. Long story short, was having an issue at my son's current school and was considering changing. The top two on my list were more expensive and further from our house but when asked about rank both sai my son would have to test. Others basically said he could come in at the rank he was, no testing. Big problem IMO. Even if they're familiar with the other school I feel there should be a test of skill.
