I was fortunate enough to have Koston as a counselor at Lake Owen when he was amateur. He was already super talented. He would do effortless ollie impossibles to feeble grinds. His landings were always super clean. He also landed a 540 over the hip ramp (in the video). Truly one of a kind. Eddie El Gato was also super amazing, and a great mentor to all us kids. He was the first person I ever saw do a 180 to nose blunt on vert. Some of the best memories of my life.
He had a good mentor/friend to guide him the right path, most pro skaters join bad friends, start drinking beer and doing drugs and just vanish. Like Antwuan. Good thing this dude is laid back
Lolo Ndlovu okay so eric Ellington and andrew Reynolds were not THE perfect mentor to show twuan the right way through skateboarding ? come on dude antwuan was a fuckhead who threw his talents away, he showed up to demo for fame and getting wasted. BUT yeah good thing he's back on his board
I met at the Huntington Beach pier a few years ago. He's been one of my biggest idols growing up. I had like 3 pairs of his Koston es'. I almost shorted when I saw him in person. I wanted to take a pic and ask for an autograph but he was with his family and I didn't want to bother him.
Good on you,so many people nowadays feel entitled to a pic and autograph and don't care if someone is with their families or eating. They will just get mad and scream "I pay your bills when I buy your shit so gimme gimme now"...
Koston was my favorite skater back in the day. He is still an epic champ but when I was younger I had the shoes the board all of his stuff. Great skater
Michael Chacon Joey from Andele is from the area also. As well as Daniel Espinosa, lots of history in the I.E. The Primitive guys come out here to Riverside once in a while. You'll see PRod and Spanish Mike eating at the local joints.
Michael Chacon Yup. Lots of video parts at Cajon and Pacific High. Do you know Mark and Jonathan Stewart AKA Bob and Ziggy? Black kids one with dreads. They are probably the two best skaters from San Bernardino when we were all growing up. And Rudy.
Love Epicly Laterd but it seems like every single video has skaters talking about other skaters saying "no one else was doing this at the time" about all of them at the same time ha.
Skating was a lot more amorphous back then though, what would become street still hadn’t really been solidified and most dudes had pretty different styles. Just look at how different Kostons shit from this time is compared to what Mike V was up to.
I'm so happy Vice goes all over the place with their coverage. I hope they do something on an unknown or highly controversial MMA fighter that no one else is covering.
Went to sk8 camp in Oregon, summer of 90’ Skated a lot of mini ramp w/ El Gato, & some w/ Koston...he was intense! 2 yrs older than me (huge difference then!), & obviously way better!! Fun times
I look at Koston this way: in an era where skateboarding was developing so fast that few were actually concentrating on performance and consistency, Eric had both quality and quantity. And when style finally went completely out the window, Eric and a few of his contemporaries kept things both smooth and tech, influencing the Reynolds, the Coles, the Haslams, et al, giving us the street skating we consider familiar to this day. I know there are kids out there who can pick apart his 101 stuff, but a lot of those kids would have been into little league or roller blading back in the day, and certainly not getting threatened, chased and arrested in an activity that few were certain would be around in ten years, let alone sponsored by Nike.
that music at 4:20 there probably isn't even a proper song - there's a music credit for Jingle Punks in the end titles, which is a website producing/selling generic music - couldn't find this exact one there, but they have some close New Order stuff... oh well
Didnt realize froston was that good at such a young age.. incredible.. that blunt to frontside bigspin off the coping was bananas and was like 14 at the time.. so much pop..
As someone that is not into skateboarding at all (probably been on one 3-4x in my life), this is a great series and a great perspective into what it takes to be a top level boarder.
I remember seeing him h-street video and thinking this is the future of street skating and why hasn't he got a bigger part in the video. Sealed the deal with 101 part.
Hello, If you really are Erick Koston, I Just want to say that I love your style and your an awesome skateboarder that I wish do become someday. Thanks for Reading (:
but he's doing what he loves, money is just a bonus that everybody needs to go further in life. who wants to work in a boring office and have the some boring day when you can go skate and hit up new spots and meet new people? its all about the love dude
Lot's of people still give a fuck about skateboarding. Skateboarding's always gone through phases of popularity for people who don't skate. Some people seem to think it's a fad or something. Fad's come and go; skateboarding has been pretty consistently progressing through the years, it's not like it's stagnant.
Justin Buice I think it was more an issue of that dude being a shitty human, and Eric calling him on it cuz he was sick of his bullshit. He was already quite well off financially, at that point.
Justin Buice Well 100$ is a lot of money when your i guess "well of financially" your basically buying stuff with hours of work, or hours of your life, it's like it's not just 100$ anymore it's like that's 8 hours of my life spent/wasted.
Justin Buice u mean he almost stomped out to death and beat his head in with his board, look up his full part in that video, but remembered the camera was on, its crazy how he could turn into a complete savage if he messes up on tricks or having a shitty day, and u looked at him wrong, or messed with him or his friends, like Koston has the ego of a really savage street kid inside him but has like the most mellow good vibe voice when he talks on camera or in the berrics videos, or when he does interviews, or when he was on Rob and Big doing skating with all the people in the street skating and backyard ramp montages( man those were the good days) or on fantasy factory
I did that thing skating on my knee as a kid. Hit something in the road and went flying. I didn't smash my teeth, but I skidded my entire bottom lip off. I woke up with a congealed bit of blood and lip or whatever in my mouth the next day (I got to stay off school though) Started skating standing up after that. ha ha.
Wise old man Eddie "I think you need somebody who believes in you not for what they can get out of you, but for who you are as a person."
yeah it's important.
That’s a rare find
That’s el gato for you.
Cheers to that!
HIT HARD

Lolo Ndlovu hahaha most skaters drink and do drugs dude antwuan isn't the only one
+Ab CRXsi peeps use drugs and drink before the fame too. It just gets easier and wilder
yeah man makes me think of brandon novak, everyone around him said he had what it took to go pro but got into heroin and gave it all up
Bring me Peter pan yea thank god novak changed his ways cause he really wasted his talents truth be told.
"he's been sick for 21 years" get well soon eric, love your skateboarding
I really wish people would stop saying “sick” when they mean good. It sounds so stupid 🤦♂️

I met at the Huntington Beach pier a few years ago. He's been one of my biggest idols growing up. I had like 3 pairs of his Koston es'. I almost shorted when I saw him in person. I wanted to take a pic and ask for an autograph but he was with his family and I didn't want to bother him.
Jody Bryan you probably did the right thing
good for you m8, im sure he appreciated it
Good on you,so many people nowadays feel entitled to a pic and autograph and don't care if someone is with their families or eating.
They will just get mad and scream "I pay your bills when I buy your shit so gimme gimme now"...
George Ramos to take a shit and then snort it, you know?
@George Ramos as in, an electrical short
Such an amazing mentor
Between him and Stevie Williams are my favorite skaters of all time!! Koston's skateboarding career is legendary!!
Stevie Williams is black.
Who else got hyped when he mentioned San Bernardino and Redlands
Man has been my favorite skaters for years and never knew he was from San Bernardino
Big ups to Eddie. People need that shit homie, encouragement, support, role models. ✊ Respect
Koston was my favorite skater back in the day. He is still an epic champ but when I was younger I had the shoes the board all of his stuff. Great skater
Believe in you for who you are as a person, not for what they can get out of you. - Eddie
San Bernardino, Redlands, and highland is the area I'm from. That's crazy knowing these guys would skate around my area.
i lived in rancho cucamonga for a while thats trippy tho
Michael Chacon Joey from Andele is from the area also. As well as Daniel Espinosa, lots of history in the I.E. The Primitive guys come out here to Riverside once in a while. You'll see PRod and Spanish Mike eating at the local joints.

Jamie Guidry 0
true that but still theres so many things out there maybe they were doing different things that hadnt been done yet. things.
No dought
well look, there‘s so many ways to skate, they all might have been telling the truth
Skating was a lot more amorphous back then though, what would become street still hadn’t really been solidified and most dudes had pretty different styles. Just look at how different Kostons shit from this time is compared to what Mike V was up to.
Skated with Koston at a 118 board shop demo back in the 90’s I was like 13/14 just star struck as hell! He signed my Girl Board too... 😎 memories 🤓
I'm so happy Vice goes all over the place with their coverage. I hope they do something on an unknown or highly controversial MMA fighter that no one else is covering.
Respect to Eddie man. Good dude, deserves recognition.
watching this video just makes you feel good inside
Went to sk8 camp in Oregon, summer of 90’ Skated a lot of mini ramp w/ El Gato, & some w/ Koston...he was intense! 2 yrs older than me (huge difference then!), & obviously way better!! Fun times
its cool to see mike carrol interviewed about eric koston. . . both my favorite skaters for the last 20plus years
thank u for being a proskater who answers comments
Eddie dude is like the most insightful and sound speaking pro skater to ever live
best series on youtube
Epicly Later'd comes through again... skateboarding's History Channel? O'Dell is doing us all a tremendous service.
That front lip to front board on the ledge at ab 5:41 was amazing. Koston probably did it first try, just messing around, not even thinking about it!
Nice Lake Owen Skate Camp (closed, previously an off-shoot of Woodward based in Wisconsin) appearance at 9:11
Skating in the 90’s & early 2000’s was the best.
I was in school, when this dude skated back in 99 - 2002 eric koston es shoes, yeah man!
I look at Koston this way: in an era where skateboarding was developing
so fast that few were actually concentrating on performance and

Got chased off plenty of times roller blading back in the day
Koston the legend. Great piece.
Somebody needs to re-open Lake Owen ASAP. The next wave is coming...
Anyone finally find out the song at 4:22? It's been 7+ years 🤣
Yo I found it! It’s called out rage is by thee fourgiven
that music at 4:20 there probably isn't even a proper song - there's a music credit for Jingle Punks in the end titles, which is a website producing/selling generic music - couldn't find this exact one there, but they have some close New Order stuff... oh well
Didnt realize froston was that good at such a young age.. incredible.. that blunt to frontside bigspin off the coping was bananas and was like 14 at the time.. so much pop..
90s King.
Koston had some of the sickest pro shoes in the late '90's.
KOSTON STILL A FUCKING LEGEND 10 years after this was posted.
damn elguera speaking some real words in here

YESSSS!!!! i KNEW vice was waiting to drop something awesome!

Could someone ID the song at 4:22 ?
Lake Owen tho!!! Had the best week ever there like 15 years ago... Rad to see it in this video.
I remember skating with you in upland 90 bad lands! Improv skate scenes! What a ride brother!
Back in the Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 days on Playstation 1, You were the only character i'de play as. Legend
Remember the 16th street sk8 shop? I never knew you made Hst. Ya baby!
Costen is the best sweet skater of all times his style, his tricks and his perfection. That’s what makes him great.
I always used Eric Kostons' gear in Tony Hawks Pro Skater 1, 2 & 3. I always had faith!
Holy shit I grew up fishing on lake Owen and I got to see the camp didn't know he was an instructor. Sad it's gone
Great series! This brought back a lot of good memories. Should do Daewon Song next.
sick vid im definitely watching all the parts
If its even possible i have even more respect for Koston, THE MAN
he is by far the best skater, have all of his shoes in my bedroom, half of them not even skated and even some of his old lakais- so sweet
As someone that is not into skateboarding at all (probably been on one 3-4x in my life), this is a great series and a great perspective into what it takes to be a top level boarder.
Now I know what daewon song meant by "some pro's that are good at tranny and won't show it in present videos".. Because it might ruin their image
I don't think Koston thinks it'll ruin his image. Maybe in his prime, but not now.
Eddie Elguera seems like a genuinely good person.
Awesome stuff, once again.
Eddie Elguera knew what was up, the guy has great wisdom and an all round nice guy.
I believe he's the best and he's avoid huge career ending injuries.
I remember seeing him h-street video and thinking this is the future of street skating and why hasn't he got a bigger part in the video. Sealed the deal with 101 part.
I remember watching this dude skate on my Nickelodeon video now portable dvd player
Welcome back......
*to this new series we’re beginning*
Does anyone know the song at 4:30?
Stuart Macfarlane did you find out i want to know as well
Is that Erik Costone??
epicly later'd dennis busenitz or matt mumford!!!

BONS TEMPOS 👏😀 QUE SAUDADE! 🤜🤛
Hello, If you really are Erick Koston, I Just want to say that I love your style and your an awesome skateboarder that I wish do become someday. Thanks for Reading (:
I'm from Redlands.. Cool to know Koston is from the City over.
but he's doing what he loves, money is just a bonus that everybody needs to go further in life. who wants to work in a boring office and have the some boring day when you can go skate and hit up new spots and meet new people? its all about the love dude
Everybody in the 80s had a hand me down Gonz. Best tail for ollies other than Natas decks.
Skateboards do tip! That was a very astute observation by Koston's Daughter.
Great! Thanks for this.
SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME THE NAME OF THE DAMN SONG AT 4:22 lol.
Out Rage Us- Thee Fourgiven
dude his "prime" never left.. he still kills it
Koston SO OG. I have 1 of his Girl decks, i still use in my trunk. SO DOPE.
Koston. Still my fav street skater!
6:15 "Yeahhh. Do that puppyyy" HAHAHAHAA

Fad's come and go; skateboarding has been pretty consistently progressing through the years, it's not like it's stagnant.
I find it interesting how many pro-skaters are introduced to skating by their older brothers
Aaaand he co-started a new skate company. Psyched for him!
Is that the Germs logo on his board?
Ya I noticed that too
Eddie sounds like a very humble and intelligent person
whats the name of the song minute 4:18????
Eddie is a legend
I like how 14 year old Eric put a germs burn on his skateboard
Whoa I didn't know this dude had a kid, damn father and skater? respect Koston respect.
So why can't these be uploaded in whole videos now instead of 6 diff parts...
Eddie is for sure the unsung hero of this video
6:25 Matt Hensley in that Inside Out tee is the fucking coolest shit
10:00 that is so true and so deep
Koston= Greatness.
6:20 “Oh yeaaahhhh do that puppy”
In Yeah Right! He almost beat the crap out of a guy over $100. Look at him now!

You think that was real? That was a skit. Look it up lol
Isaiah Martinez calm down man it seems like you have an erection for him
I did that thing skating on my knee as a kid. Hit something in the road and went flying. I didn't smash my teeth, but I skidded my entire bottom lip off. I woke up with a congealed bit of blood and lip or whatever in my mouth the next day (I got to stay off school though) Started skating standing up after that. ha ha.
I watched part 1..........damn i knew i shouldn't of watched it ...know i have to watch part 2..... oh well here i go
Sick it, Vice.
