    I have never relate so much to what you have said. I am currently doing audit in one of the Big 4s as well but when you mentioned that you feel the most fulfilled when you created something, that was exactly how I felt. I am often the "graphic designer" when it comes to school clubs and after graduation, I did an internship as a content writer before I start my full time in finance. Throughout these experiences, I felt most proud and happy when I can see the outcome (in this case are my poster, shirts designs and articles which I have written being published online). Now, I am trying to learn UX design on my own as I want to stop wasting time. This video has motivated me and thank you for sharing your story :)

      The answer was always yes!

    Glad to hear that you're living your best authentic life. I pursed a degree in CIS and it took the pandemic of me being laid off to see CIS has never been my path. Similar to you, coming from a west indian background my parents put in us to be financially stable. So, I couldn't pursue what I wanted, which was either art or interaction design. Doing a UXD bootcamp and self studying is literally my best decision. Maybe I'll consider getting a Master's in interactive design in the future. ❤

I'm glad that I found a job during the pandemic, but every day I keep asking myself "is this what you really want to do for the rest of your life?" Spreadsheets, accounts payable, entries, invoices, emails, request approvals, reports, variances. Thank you for making these informative videos Hebe! I'm about to start a UXDI course with GA next week (totally online, so it should be interesting!). It's great to hear about your experience and outcome. I totally understand the thing about wanting to feel secure in terms of a job and money. I studied pharmacy at uni and worked as a pharmacist for several years but just didn't find it as fulfilling as I'd hoped, and I've been trying to figure out what to do with my career for a while since. My parents came to Australia from China, so obviously they kept trying to convince me to go back to pharmacy cos it's such a secure job and stable income (what they'd always hoped for me), but honestly I just didn't enjoy it. In the back of my mind there's always that fear of 'what if this doesn't work out?' and 'what do I do next?'. But I've always been more of a problem solving and creative person, so I think UX design is something I definitely want to pursue :) Anyway will keep following your videos, keep up the great work!

    • @itsmeheebie

      I'm so happy that you made the decision to try! What really helped me when I was considering about my career pivot was to ask myself "why not?" and "what could be the worst possible outcome" and none of the worst outcome was bad enough for me not to try. Similar to you, my parent moved from China to U.S. and the thing i told myself was if my parent took the risk of leaving everything they knew to a completely foreign country with no money and not knowing the language so we would have a better future, then i wont be doing them justice by not trying and taking risk to better my life and be happier. They have sacrificed too much for me to just go through the motions of life. I hope you the best in your UXDI course at General Assembly. Cheers! :)

    Omg this was very convenient for me! I’m currently 17 and was dead set on being an accountant, but a couple weeks ago found out about UX/UI design. In California schools don’t really have a “UI/UX” major so I’m going to college for business (marketing+info systems) and taking bootcamps/courses on the side. I think marketing would be a helpful major in UX right? Also I want something I can maybe fall back on if I can’t get into UX right away. Thank you for this video!!!

    • @itsmeheebie
      @itsmeheebie  4 года назад +1

      wow this made my day! I think you have a solid plan going for you. You definitely have it more figured out than me when i was 17 haha. Going into business helps with widening your scope in case you decide to do something else in the future. Marketing and info system are both great majors and I think marketing would definitely help because a lot of marketing is understanding human behavior which is crucial for UX. I wish the best for you! Keep up the curious spirit :)

      @kristishumway7205 4 года назад +2

      So awesome that you found this early. I'm still trying to go through a transition from structural engineering into UX and I'm 30! I won't be going through a formal college route, but I did look it when I first came across UX/UI. I haven't seen programs named specifically for UX, but check out other possible names that would start you off well, such as Interaction Design, Human Computer Interaction, Information Technology, Information Management, etc. I know there are definitely some graduate programs under those names, but there could possibly be undergrad programs too. Agreed that Marketing is probably good too, of course. :)

      itsmeheebie Thank you so much! I know it’s kind of hard to break into even planning early, so i’m going to try my best. Also, I am very indecisive and even my mom got mad at me (because she wants me to be an accountant for the money, but she doesn’t know UX designers can make WAYYY more) for not “knowing”. I definitely want to do UX after researching what it’s about! Thx again!

      Kristi Shumway Thank you sm for this info! Definitely will look more into those. People often tell me that people switch to UI/UX later on and that’s dope! UI/UX is so interesting and creative. Thanks for sharing your experiences too, I hope you can get into it soon :D!

    • @itsmeheebie
      @itsmeheebie  4 года назад +1

      @@kat-zj1oh from personal experience, UX definitely makes more than accounting lol. Especially, if you calculate your annual salary divided by how much you work in a year (accountants can work pretty crazy hours). I'm sure your mom will come around, in the end, she wants what best for you. I was super scared telling my mom telling my strict and practical mom about my decision to quit a year ago and to my surprise she simply said "do what make you happy". Lastly, It's okay to be a little indecisive, youre only 17 hehe. Don't rush life! ...god i sound old.

      Thanks!!! Sorry, but I don't know much about Springboard (maybe see if you can find any testimonies on reddit or somewhere). I've heard that 3-5 case studies is the sweet spot for number of projects on a portfolio. The most important thing is to make sure you show different things on each case study and it's better to have some web application and some mobile application. I had two in person interviews and one of them asked me to do a white board challenge and the other one didn't. Hope this helps! :)

      Hi Elizabeth, sorry to hear that. Job hunting is stressful as it is and I know it's especially hard during the pandemic. Have you reached out to ask for feedback on the interview? That might help to better prepare you for the next time. Besides linkedin and glassdoor, I like to join slack channels and follow designers on twitter and usually I see post about jobs there. Personally, as a new UX Designer, I tired to showcase my work and demonstrate my skills as much as I can online and I think that helps with job hunting because it shows that you have the relevant skills to be a UX Designer. I hope this helps and good luck!

    Thank you for your videos! They are very helpful. I am currently switching careers too and am looking into General Assembly. I noticed there is a UX Bootcamp and a UX part time course. The part time one is cheaper but I am wondering the difference between the two since the Bootcamp is very expensive.

    • @itsmeheebie
      @itsmeheebie  4 года назад

      i'm not quite sure how different the part time is in comparison to the full time. The main reason why i did full time was to transition as soon as possible and with my job at the time i wouldnt have the capacity to do part time.

      @@itsmeheebie Yes, I understand. I keep looking for how people get into UX Design and it seems a lot go through a certification program or have a mentor. I don't have either and am trying to figure out what is best since I just graduated with a degree in Behavioral Science with a minor in Human Systems Integration and quit my job to focus on building a portfolio. When you build a portfolio, can you just come up with your own case studies or do they need to be real clients?

    How did you pay your bills in this time that you were in GA and looking for work? this is what im struggling with now. I want to go all in, but i still have bills to pay and can't leave my current job ):

    • @itsmeheebie
      @itsmeheebie  4 года назад +2

      Hi Victoria, I think it's different for everyone, but for me I saved enough to make sure I can support myself during my time at GA and some time after when I am job hunting. I don't have a family to support so I got by with the money that I saved and really really budgeted and limited my spending.

    So didn't you need to get a graduation to become a UX designer? Or yes?🙏🏻thanks

    • @adrijadutta4743

      Graduation in design is the not only one root to catch it. You can just get a diploma in UX.. This field needs your skill not your degree..
