- We looked at a lot of best (and worst) of things in Halo, but we never really looked at what makes so many Halo maps unique. Their skyboxes. Whether it is a Halo Ring in the background, or something Covenant related, Halo maps have a certain feeling to them. But what are the best Halo Skyboxes of all time?

The last level of ODST is one of my favorites for this. Seeing the massive carrier slowly come out from behind the clouds and start glassing just looked really dang cool.
Yes and the feeling of anxiety booking it to leave Mombasa. Wraiths, a scarab and a super carrier looming overhead.
Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, and Halo: Reach are the best Halo games thus far
Honestly the art style of reach is just beautiful I also love the details in the background like scarbs fighting and fighting in the air etc, it was truly amazing at the time
Yea you can tell that reach's art style has that living breathing concept art look to it. even halo 4 and infinite toke note from it.
Skyboxes and proper ambient background noise are part of what made Bungies halo games so memorable to me. They managed to capture and deliver the awe and mystery perfectly using the surrounding environment. I love the small moment on Halo 2’s mission “Sacred Icon” where you cross a large chasm on a gondola with snow falling down in flurries as the sunlit portion of the halo ring looms above you just before you enter the next combat zone. Oh and the music is the cherry on top 👌
I absolutely ADORE Reach's Anchor 9 skybox, it's just gorgeous and one of, if not my favorite views of all halo games.
Finally someone appreciates the great sky boxes of halo.
I’ve always wondered what was out there in a halo level or mission but you can’t really explore them there just set pieces, but I will still be great full that they made such good sky boxes and let me have that feeling of exploring.👍
Yes not just halo but exploring other games boundaries outside of the mission area. Now a days it’s just kill boundaries and invisible walls.

Man what I have wanted to see for a long time is massive explorable spaces. You think you can get to that space right there? YOU CAN! That rooftop? Accessible. That distant geometry? If you want to walk over there you can! Though it would make it harder trying to come up with a legit looking barrier/ invisible wall that makes sense to eventually stop you, it still sucks when there is a clearly accessible area that is totally blocked by some invisible wall. It's like LET ME IN let me explore that AHHHHH

I always appreciate the campaign backgrounds where you see entire battles happening, especially in Tip of the Spear in Reach.
I really like the skybox in Halsey's Lab; when you get into her room in the easter egg.
The Halo 2 sky boxes always made me wonder what was out there. Until we superbounced out of the map. Even still they were gorgeous and full of wonder. Great video!
Shame you didn't call out two of my favorites: Escape from Arc (H5) and Fathom (H5).
In Escape from Arc, the map takes place on the bottom of the sea floor, with huge forcefields holding back the ocean. Should have been an eacape sequence in the campaign where the forcefields fail and the ocean swallows tha play area.
Fathom is conpletely underwater, with whales that sing and swim by.
I love that he points out a mountain in forge world on halo reach and my first though is oh I never noticed that somehow though it looks cool like a skull then he points out that it looks like a skull to him but also says that he isn't sure if that's what everyone else sees
Not many people would appreciate the fact that you guys made an 18 minute video about the skyboxes in Halo. The ability you guys have of creating truly engaging content across the Halo franchise is seriously impressive. You guys are honestly talented and I hope you take pride in your work. Great stuff! Also, amazing skyboxes too! This is inspiring!

Literally every halo 5 skybox should've been here
The halo three warthog run, in that one I never looked up. I never saw that skybox before. This is my actual first time really seeing that and wow it looks amazing
So I could be mistaken, but I though that in the sky box on Halo the "planet" on the Ark is actually the wreck of High Charity
It actually seems to be the center of the Ark. You can see it in Halo Wars 2 aswell.

High Charity is far too small.
High Charity is apparently “roughly 1/75 the size of a Halo installation” according to Halopedia.
the planet providing all the base for 1-7 halo array replacements is big one, high charity is at best 1/15 the size of the moon of earth
All of your commentary was spot on!! The map choices were perfect examples to highlight the amazing skyboxes of the series!! Although I am a bit bummed you never mentioned Halo 3’s Cold Storage map! While it is only a remake, I loved the heavy Flood aesthetic and that huge amount of biomass that can be found just outside of the ship, making you wonder just how far the outbreak has spread! And to my knowledge it is the only known map to contain moving Flood infection forms as part of the background outside the map. As a kid I was always scared that if you got out of bounds they would attack you
I really liked the Scouting Station(?) from Halo Reach Multiplayer. Seeing Reach(?) like that was beautiful in a spooky way
The Assault on the Control Room felt claustrophobic since there is no "sky"

7:40 i think that we are on the ring that was being rebuilt and its hovering above the arc as they ado while being created. so we are looking down at the arc from the ring. i never even looked at that skybox until a few years ago(probebly because of the same reason you mentioned. the panic of having to escape XD) but it for sure is in the top 5 coolest halo skybox list for sure. along with the halo 2 high charity one :)

@@jorgezorrilla835 No it's shite. Compared to Halo 3, well it's not even a comparison. The design of the campaign sandbox was ass, the multiplayer was ass. It was just pretty. If it wasn't Halo it would only be mediocre, but as a Halo it's just ass.

This is a great video, im one of those guys that will get caught up in the game no matter how many times ill play a level, and ill forget to stop and smell the roses. I'll be doing more of that from now on. Its a shame that devs can spend days desiging a level and all the little details, and i havent taken the time too look UP in so many games. Great video, keep up the great work.
If you didn't know, the skybox being a dome is actually how skyboxes work. They are normally very large and encompass the entire map. Usually, it isn't obvious that it's a giant sphere, but that one map having a tiny skybox makes sense since it is underground and you really aren't meant to go up that high.

15:06 I've never looked up in this room and hoo boy. Halo's skyboxes are amazing, but if there's one thing that really bugs me in skyboxes/OOB areas (in any game really) it's when the backdrop is obviously too small or too close and it's clearly visible when moving around (parallax). Wolfenstein 2 has an especially bad example of this when you look up in some of the sewer areas of Manhattan - through holes in the ceiling you can see the ruined skyscrapers, but they're obviously downscaled and only reach about a few dozen meters high.
Halo 4 has some underrated sky boxes

Favorite skybox was on the arc. When you see the galaxy you felt like you really traveled away to a far off distant universe
I remember one of the first times I played halo 3 multiplayer when the game was new and getting a match on The Pit and I’m just distracted by the fence at the edge like “…I wanna go there. Lemme out.”
Getting outside of reach maps with complete invincibly, with music, while high…..quite a adventure.

Heu guys, great vid. want to add some skyboxes: halo reach has the anchor9 map that has a really cool glassed reach and a skybattle alsooo in halo 2a right after high charity arrives look up and you wi see hundreds of ships
Gotta say, Halo skyboxes absolutely nail it in almost every iteration of the Halo games.
My favorite from each of the games are
Halo Reach: New Alexandria and Forge World
Halo CE: Halo and Boarding Action
Halo 2: Sacred Icon and Quarantine Zone
Halo 3 ODST: Coastal Highway
Halo 3: The Ark and Halo along with Assembly Orbital and Blackout
Halo 4: Requiem
Halo 5: All the Sanghelios levels
Halo Infinite: It only has the one
These are just a few that I really liked and they're not the only ones I like.

Possible idea for a video "strengths and weaknesses of every halo game". Could be cool to see what the best games may have got wrong and what the worst ones got right. Plus I think it's a pretty catchy name too

Haven't finished the video yet so don't know if it got props but there's one Spartan Ops level when you have these giant pillars covered in lush greenery and it really reminds me of that one chinese nationl park but still feels so alien and beautiful
Hey could you make a video counting the military might of the factions in the halo franchise. For example, a enemy can count a certain number of points depending on the rank and vehicles can count their number of points as well. Then tally up the points at the end of each level and then at the end of the game.
Now this is the tasty content I am looking for.
So I just figured out that in halo 3 if you shoot a rocket into the scarab's beam at the right angle your rocket will spin off in a random direction.pretty weird

Halo 2 anniversary High Charity is absolute perfection. Made me want a full game set there to explore it all.

Has anyone else noticed that in some of the Halo CE Anniversary maps for Reach the ring curves at an angle it doesn't go straight up but more to the side a bit as if the inside of the ring is tilted out it bit like a bowl? It's interesting, I'll have to try & remember the exact map but it has been a while 🤔
Reactor is absolutely necessary, but Diamondback is a little questionable since people might not want a redundant map. I've heard some amazing ideas from the community on what to do with it.
Some people recommend porting it to Reach which would be absolutely amazing, Reach is naturally great for big team games and the aesthetic would tie in a lot with the game's last mission (not Lone Wolf).
some people think it should stay in Halo 3 but with more Forge options and default weapon layouts using the new items from the ODST update,
I could also see it added to ODST’s firefight. I think the two-base structure is might be a bit much, so each half could be sealed off, one for a daytime variant, the other for a nighttime variant.

I broke infinites like first week of it being out(campaign) and a weird glitch happened right after all I did was test the sky box with a banshee
Halo reach has my favorite skyboxes and im kinda supriesed they jus scimmed over it
I get a sad seeing mombasa in ruins on the missions, tsavo highway, the storm and floodgate in halo 3. I just imagine all the people who were killed by the slipspace blast and the covenant killing civilians just seeing the ruins smoldering in the background is straight up sad in my opinion. Now the best imo is the beachfront on the mission the ark at the beginning of the game

Reach had the most beautiful sky boxes.
Halo 4 looked pretty aweful most of the time. This is underlined by the reach map pack made by "343". The sky boxes of those maps are good from a design standpoint, but the graphics are god awful.
I clearly remember the low poly skyboxes of the halo 4 Multiplayer. To this day I have very bad remories about halo 4.
Edit: in forge world, you are able to reach the halo ring. You need to go out of bounce with a teleporter and then go to theatre.

I really like the "skybox" on infinite, looking over the edge of the broken ring is trippy. The first time i notices stars below me I pushed a marine off and just watched him spiral off into the cosmos.
ODST has the best vibe and soundtrack out of every halo. Not saying it’s the best game at all, but aesthetically it was very pleasing.

Anyone else like the skybox from h2 anniversary the arbiter level? I think that one’s cool because you got like a sunset at the top then you have a huge hurricane with lighting strikes at the bottom
And imo the arbiter levels skybox in og h2 is kinda meh but the anniversary versions cool.

You guys really need to learn how to level audio. Not everything has to be on the edge of "oversteering"... No joke, my amplifier is always cutting off the sound when your videos play because the sound is continuously peaking. Do a small (free) online course or something. It's a very simple thing to pick out. It should be blatantly in your face when you know what I'm talking about.
In the center of the ark the planet our we’re talking about might not be a planet but a planet sized core to power the ark but since it’s being destroyed during the duration of the level the ark is being destroyed by the flood since the core was powering all the flood containment facilities
