It is very expensive in the US, I just spent 10 days in Cebu and Dumaguete and it was sooo much cheaper. I stayed at Quest Hotel in Cebu and it was $47 a night. I spent $266 for a room in New York City for 1 night waiting to catch my flight to the Philippines and the room at Quest was just as nice. I live in the Orlando area and live ok on around 50k, but I live in a motorhome, so my lot rent is much cheaper than renting an apartment or house. My mom lives near me, is retired, has no mortgage and doesn't go out a lot and she still spends around $2200 / month, it ain't cheap to live in the US anymore and is just getting more expensive every day.

My wife and I grossed $205k last year. I used to not have a budget and just saved 25% and spent whatever was left over but now we have a budget. We just went to an average restaurant in south Florida and for 3 of us it was $155. It was just a run of the mill chain restaurant. Even at our income with the inflation and cost living it is difficult to thrive in America. Our house in Cebu that cost $40k to build would cost over 300k here to build.

You can scratch Vietnam off that list. They don't like long term foreigners here unless you are employing Vietnamese citizens. Vietnamese aren't looking to marry older foreigners. The cost of living isn't that low either, legally you can't live like a local as far as renting some cheap place. America sucks I get it, but unless you are quite wealthy there aren't very many countries to go to long term. If you have 3k a month plus in pension than you can just do a circuit of different countries. The PI seems a boomer's dream as except for a select few who did well in the US its not a place to obtain money but to spend it.

(Median is a MUCH more important term than average, as the average is pulled up by the extremes.) The "average" salary was 59k. Cost of living in WA is 17% higher than the national average, and the average cost of living in WA is 22k annually (groceries, rent, and utilities), remember the average includes Seattle, and the rest of King County, dragging the number up. A single guy in WA can comfortably live on 50k, depending on where in WA you settle (outside of King County), complete with savings, assuming said guy has decent financial hygiene. (It doesn't matter how much you make, or where you live, if you're irresponsible, you can use it all.)

      16/mo Netflix
      250/mo elect/gas/garbage
      25/mo dmv fees (yearly tag)
      40/mo haircuts
      800/mo rent
That leaves us -528 on the month my guy
Ok so lets drop the car payment lets assume car is paid for we are still -151/mo. And you mentioned said guy is saving? Now savings and retirement are two different buckets right, so maybe guy is not planning for retirement in your said scenario and only "saving"? Now I don't live in WA nor do I make 50k but if someone told me tomorrow I was getting demoted to 50k and had to move to WA this would be the way I would assess my potential situation and numbers. And the 50k salary just isn't mathing for me. So is said guy paying less rent than 800, not saving for retirement but instead just putting money in savings? Trying to understand how one can be "comfortable" on 50k in WA? Maybe he built a "shed to house" in the back country and cash flowed it, thus having no monthly rent lol? I mean there isn't even any fun discretionary spending in this budget so Im not sure about this 50k level of comfort we're talking about here lol.

@@JakeandJesset You are starting out your "financially responsible" life with an immediately irresponsible action. Saving 20% is the gold standard, not 46%. Also, if you're going to go with a large % savings, you should be deducting it from your income with a traditional, effectively lowering your taxes. If you're buying a 20k car, then you have TERRIBLE financial hygiene. You can get a quality reliable car for 4k, 6k effortlessly (which you should pay for with savings, auto loans are a waste of money), and since a car is a fast depreciating "asset" (read liability), this is not where your money should be going. Just fixing these two terrible assumptions you made puts us back in the black, now with a positive 1,479 a month (going along with your other numbers). Like I said, you have to have good financial hygiene, which your scenario does not.

I agree Gio. For instance Im a nurse and where we are in Northern California I think the cheapest Nursing degree locally is about 60k for all 4 yrs right now. Now compare that to 2 friends of mine who recently graduated Nursing school in Bohol and their base tuition was 1k per yr. They are both now working here in Cali making that USD. Phenomenal return on their money. But I refuse to pay the scam college tuition in the US for our kids. They can either get the GI Bill like I did, if that will even cover it now a days, or I will pay for a college in the PH.
We are reverse engineering our way out of the US now bc this is more like the American Nightmare than a dream. We can live in the PH on 1/3 of what we are paying here in NorCal. And be surrounded by much more polite and pleasant people to top it off!!
    Take care bud! Jake

You’re not supposed to retire in your 40s. I worked in Thailand during my 40s but returned to the US on my 50th birthday in 2015. Glad I did bc there were far more good paying jobs for me than when I left in 2005. Which means my social security benefits will be higher (minus 10 years of not paying into ss) plus I have a great pension now as well. The only major cost increase I have seen is rent. That is caused by private landlords colluding to raise rents on everyone across the board. The other major change has been rightwingers taking away civil liberties.

I left prior to the pandemic but looking back, there is no way I could afford to live in the states now. Healthcare alone can bankrupt someone let alone all the other rising costs. We quickly realized that we both preferred Thailand to retire to. Reasons were affordability (similar to Ph but more for your $), food choices for expats were greater, cleanliness, traffic, health care, 5G etc. Overall things actually WORK here 😂. I actually prefer that they can't keep the lights on. As to the food, Thailand has awesome food. But I am a good cook. I make great Thai, Chinese, Mexican and have made some awesome dishes by experimenting. When the collapse comes, life in the Philippine provinces won't change that much. For me, it won't change at all. I am going to be fairly self sufficient and will be able to trade for items I don't want to grow, like rice and pork.

The illegals around me have it figured out how to thrive in the US. Those that live where I live all get rental assistance, food stamps, and large tax refunds on their $5000 declared income [actually making 50K to 100K under the table.] with 5 to 10 dependents. They are doing well.

I left Canada in 2011 and never returned even for a visit. The cost of living is ridiculously high in Canada now and salaries are much lower than in the USA. I’m a very well-educated, experienced professional, and was born in Canada, but I can’t afford it.

The American dream is to leave. Next week I will be in Baguio. Philippines. Maybe Da Lat, Vietnam, sometime in middle to late June. Who knows where next? The divisiveness of politics in the States is exhausting. We have one party openly talking about another Civil War. No thank-you! Not my idea of a nice retirement. I'll be voting absentee this year from somewhere in South-East Asia. Probably won't go back to the US for quite a while.
