My favourite are the watchers. A jawa like creature appears (no glowing eyes of course), tells you something, then disappears. Most of the time it doesn't do anything just observes the events.
Crotalids. The fact that warp traveling crocodiles are canon is a fun reminder of the old Rogue Trader days, when humor and whimsy were allowed to coexist with grimdark.
Given your feelings about the setting's lack of unknown/unknowable horror elements, a collaboration between you and Weshammer would be a perfect match. I love his "Grimdark Storytime," where he focuses on lesser-known entities, myths, etc., that have the very "horrific unknown" vibe you describe. Plus, a collaboration between two of my favorite lore-hammer creators would just be awesome.
A possibility: the survivalism was their stated purpose. They were built as a time-skipping archivist race, to keep the knowledge of the war - and the sins of the Necrontyr/C'Tan - alive and well.
In the Forges of Mars books, a captive Hrud Warren is used by a mad Tech-Priest to stabilize the effects of wielding a C’Tan shard as a chronometric weapon/galactic terraforming tool. I believe it was said in a passage in the third book that the Hrud don’t exist in normal four-dimensional spacetime, hence their strange reality-bending nature.

Thank you for another excellent video Brother Bald! It is interesting how in the 4 years since I've gotten into the lore of this setting this is the first time I've actually seen someone make a video on the Hrud, I didn't even know they had language and writing! I completely agree with you on the decline of the horror of the unknown in the setting, it is a true shame that they keep over explaining and dropping the ball on the chance for some real shivers. Cheers!
Awesome review.I think the going back in time angle is a bit romantic but 1 would imagine that the further back in time they go the more numerous and powerful they would become having gained "distance" from their future threat facing them. Although i could see them running backwards through time from the tyranids whos methods of ftl might break linear space time. Maybe even being surviving gene stealer cultists who broke away from the hive mind.
As someone who only started reading the actual law, the horror only just begun, I've started just reading The solar war when the warp opens and oh lord as a Rogal Dorn fan that got hooked on your Rogal Dorn series seeing the horrors of the Alpha legion and Word Bearers can commit on mortals is something else. The warp is still a horror for what it ca still do. Long term readers are just combat vets that see stuff that would break most people and shrug it off because someone else did it worse.
I always thought of hrud as perhaps being the product of a rather nostalgia ridden Old One, or a gestalt collection of a rather non confrontational Old One or group of them.

Well done with this episode! The Hrud are so ripe for speculation, and all we really know about them is that we don't know. It would be cool to have them as a faction, but then again all the mystique would be gone.
Another terrific video! I knew nothing about the Hrud so this was all new to me. One of the nice things about the 40k universe is it is different, not just the usual space opera type stuff.
Amazing video! The Hrud are among the scariest tertiary factions in the 40k universe. I often feel like the xenos you do not see are far more threatening than the xenos you do see. If I ever had the misfortune of having to choose, I would even face Tyranids before having to deal with the Hrud, the Ancient Gods of Necromunda, or Emperor forbid - the Slaugth. If they manipulate time perhaps the old ones used them to speed up the evolution of their weaponised races? So instead of millions of years waiting for the eldar to evolve it was done in a much shorter space of time....
I really like the Hrud. Them and the Khrave are very well written species. But the Hrud are different, in that they are actually non hostile. They just want to be left alone. Imagine these guys if they were warlike? Superb work on FO London dude 👏
Fantastic video Baldermort. Like a haunting David Attenborough. I like the blend of alien species being explained with the horror of the unknown. Hope you feel better soon.
I know that picture! it was of my 3rd edition childhood years, you are not wrong about the unknown. knowing everything removes the mystery and the horror.
TBH, that might have been one of the greatest blunders in Horus's career. sending a slow infantry force to fight things that practically put you on a time limit by existing.
Thank you once again a true feast for the ears. My day is always better when I have a chance to listen to your work. Also, never apologize for being under the weather. You may have a servo skull avatar, but you're still very much human. Your listeners appreciate what you do and we'll always understand when life catches up with you. 🫡
I am going to be honest I really wish we would get a Great Crusade Game. All loyalist legions against Hrud, Orks, And some other Xenos. I can’t tell you how fun Xeno vs Imperium are it’s why I like the Tau, they are so fun to play against.
Fascinating. I like the story arcs the main 40k plot has been building but I agree, the uncertainty of what lies in the darkness has been lost a little. Species like the Hrud and Enslavers still give the chills because of their mystery.
Since learning about them I’ve been curious about The Hrud! This video both answered and raised so many questions for me! Which is exactly what I needed to keep them fascinating!) (That said I would like to hear a hrud tale sometime)
As always, you belittle yourself, Brother B, but you are undeserving. Your Lore is poetry, and the history of the Hrud is super impressive. Take care of yourself, you are a precious resource:)
Sorry to hear you've not been well. Hope you feel better soon! I've always wanted the Hrud to be a playable race - substituting umber hulk minis and all kinds for tabletop adaptations. But I think you've made a strong case for *not* making that official, for keeping that boundless horror alive. Which in turn keeps my favourite part of the game alive, which also seems to have fallen by the wayside: the narrative game. I have ideas for building an umbra or enslavers at some point, but maybe these need a 3d print?
Love the point made at the end and completely agree…it’s sad but what can you do? There are pros and cons to the recent ‘shining a light’ approach. There were some absolutely amazing moments and books and characters during HH series but yeah we definitely lost a lot of the myth and mystery and magic of the vague and unknown and tbh the single paragraph that first described the final conflict between emperor and Horus I thought genuinely better than the entire end and the death trilogy…🤷🏽♂️
Great video! My brother snd I always thought they deserved more attention from that first mention in the core rule book. They are mentioned in the Tau codex. They "drove them off" the planet or into extinction with AI iridium plated suits and drones because their time fields would decay their suits and men too quickly. Second or third Tau codex, I believe. Love your show, Sir.
I wonder how much the Necrons know about them. At the very start of The Infinite and The Divine Orikhan sabotages a stasis field containing numerous Hrud and even an intact burrow in Trazyn's museum. So they clearly know how to capture them and keep them alive.
5:09 "It is not a vista worthy of song..." What a beautiful way of saying the most understated analysis of living amongst a TIME-WARPING xenos race xD "Its not a pretty sight." He said. Meanwhile, the humans living amongst the hrud: "EVERY SECOND IS A DECADE, AAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGHHHH"
I agree with your point about horror at the end of the video. That's why I dislike the theories that Catachan is the result of an ancient Tyranid invasion. It's way more interesting when these strange cosmic anomalies are allowed to remain strange. It doesn't always have to be Tyraninds or Chaos behind it.
Fringe races like this need to turn up in Kill Team. Never heard of the Hrud, absolutely fascinating. The line of horror novels hopefully means they will always keep this aspect of 40k
It’s Friday evening and time to see if Baldy’s posted something for my entertainment. Thanks for your dedication to bringing us the lore and stories we love 💕😊
Another great video!! I would...ask... is tgat the right word? Your earlier videos withoutthe animations are so much better, theres so few videos out there that i can put on to paint to as they all have animations that make u want to watch. I absolutely love your content and hole you keep it up❤
I don't comment alot, but i know myself and others want you to take care of yourself. We appreciate and look forward to the uploads, but don't let it come at your healths expense. Love the style of the vids and the content.
Thank you for this, fascinating. I totally agree, since the BL horror imprint the general horror is diminishing. The Hrud in Lords Of Mars appearing out of nowhere for me as I'd not heard of them was so disturbing Also - kudos on Fallout London, I absolutely marked out hearing your opening Brother Balders
As a huge horror fan I find it to be quite sad the general discarding of the horror elements of 40k, the xenos with their unknowable ways and the twisting realms of time and space the uncertainty of ones position really add to the setting. I love cosmic insignificance and horror like Lovecrafts works promote, and I feel we are losing it and it's hard to get it back once gone.
Really underated xenos, their portrayal in Perturabo: Hammer of Olympia was horrifying. Wish GW and Black Library writers would utilise them, along with other lesser xenos, more. Maybe eventually give them a model (doubt).

I know that picture! it was of my 3rd edition childhood years, you are not wrong about the unknown.
knowing everything removes the mystery and the horror.
Another excellent installment!

Just an awesome entry, I love learning about these more obscure aspects of the universe :)
Thank you
Loremaster, once again, your voice lends succor in hard times. Thank you.
Oh this is quite exciting, thank you faithful servant for your content!
Awesome! This is why I keep notifications on. Hope you can get some affordable fish and chips today, Baldermort

And Horus sent the iron warriors to basically face them alone in one of the most bloody but forgotten wars of the entire great crusade.
Imperium? ... or horus, knowing it could break even the iron warriors and lead them to his cause
Horus did it intentionally. Just like changing the wording for Russ.
@@richardgreen7532 oh yhea I forgot. By that time horus was already drinking lots of kool aid
The iron warriors were there so it's SOP to forget about it. Even Perturbed rainbow has forgotten it.
Spending the day catching up on some newer videos. I love a little Baldermort Binge!
The Unknown is slipping in the setting...thanks for a comment I agree with completely!
I always have time for Baldermort.
I am going to be honest I really wish we would get a Great Crusade Game. All loyalist legions against Hrud, Orks, And some other Xenos. I can’t tell you how fun Xeno vs Imperium are it’s why I like the Tau, they are so fun to play against.
Thank you for brightening a dull winter's afternoon in Australia.
This is the perfect way to start my two week vacation. I have wanted to learn about this race as well. Thank you Baldermort!
Which is exactly what I needed to keep them fascinating!)
(That said I would like to hear a hrud tale sometime)
Very good. Still learning 40k so this was cool as i've really only heard their name in passing during other stories. Interesting race...
Loved it as usual!! Sorry you've been feeling rough!! Take care of yourself, RUclips would suck without you!!
Great work as always Brother Baldermort.
Wow vast underground Hrud army... never woulda thought of that :D
As always, you belittle yourself, Brother B, but you are undeserving. Your Lore is poetry, and the history of the Hrud is super impressive. Take care of yourself, you are a precious resource:)
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻. Apologies. It’s a character flaw to many, a shield against egotism that I find necessary.
Oh this is gonna be great!
Blessed bald one. Have a wonderful weekend. In saving this ditty for work ❤️
Always happy to see a notification from Bald!
No time for peace, only time for WAR!
I wonder how much the Necrons know about them. At the very start of The Infinite and The Divine Orikhan sabotages a stasis field containing numerous Hrud and even an intact burrow in Trazyn's museum. So they clearly know how to capture them and keep them alive.
5:09 "It is not a vista worthy of song..."
What a beautiful way of saying the most understated analysis of living amongst a TIME-WARPING xenos race xD
"Its not a pretty sight." He said. Meanwhile, the humans living amongst the hrud: "EVERY SECOND IS A DECADE, AAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGHHHH"
PRAISE GORK AND MORK, ITS DA BALDERMORT!
Orcs get excited to hear baldermort tell bad ass stories like they get excited to fight yarrick
Ee's a righ proper yarn-spinnin git
I agree with your point about horror at the end of the video. That's why I dislike the theories that Catachan is the result of an ancient Tyranid invasion. It's way more interesting when these strange cosmic anomalies are allowed to remain strange. It doesn't always have to be Tyraninds or Chaos behind it.
Another crackin' lore vid. Your health troubles didn't have a negative affect on my enjoyment of this interesting bit of lore. 😊
Fringe races like this need to turn up in Kill Team. Never heard of the Hrud, absolutely fascinating. The line of horror novels hopefully means they will always keep this aspect of 40k
Thank you Baldermort !
i've been waiting for this one
Even Space Marines can die of old age when they are near them for long.
Love your videos, keep up the high quality work!
It’s Friday evening and time to see if Baldy’s posted something for my entertainment. Thanks for your dedication to bringing us the lore and stories we love 💕😊
Very excited for this!
Get well soon B. Thanks for the vid
Thank you , Baldy .
🐺 Loupis Canis .
Another great video!! I would...ask... is tgat the right word? Your earlier videos withoutthe animations are so much better, theres so few videos out there that i can put on to paint to as they all have animations that make u want to watch. I absolutely love your content and hole you keep it up❤
Emprah protect us!
Also, I hope you start feeing better.
Already am good sir. Just a little slower. Sorry!
You may find them horrific but I’m sure some people think they’re beautiful!
I don't comment alot, but i know myself and others want you to take care of yourself. We appreciate and look forward to the uploads, but don't let it come at your healths expense. Love the style of the vids and the content.
Thank you for that brother. A lot. I will try to make sure I get fitter. My apologies.
3min?! Has the Horrific Algorithm been trained?
Praise be to the machine spirit...
Horror made manifest in some ways
“The Darkness… of the UNKNOWN.”
❤
Awesome. I'd like more content on xenos that gave the Imperium a run for their money. Can't wait for the Rangdun(?) Genocide to be revealed
Thank you for this, fascinating. I totally agree, since the BL horror imprint the general horror is diminishing. The Hrud in Lords Of Mars appearing out of nowhere for me as I'd not heard of them was so disturbing
Also - kudos on Fallout London, I absolutely marked out hearing your opening Brother Balders
BALDERMORT YOU’RE A LEGEND!!!
Being randomly on a lower deck and stumbling on a hrud has to be horrifying.
Holy throne yes. Bendies is a funny name, but with the horror of xeno relations? I’d run a mile!
@baldermort Even if you could survive it's not like the brass would believe you. Now you have to live knowing the bendies are there. I couldn't do it.
Sick, need more instantly. Subbed
The Hrud as an army is the only thing Games Workshop could sell me. But let’s not get too creative and just keep spitting out some space marine slop.
“They have decaying skin.” Oh that’s grim
“And live underground.” And dark too!
Thanks again.
Love them been waiting for so long
Man Baldormort, you really roll them “Rs” when you say Hrud.
It makes them sound more alien. Said quickly in my accent it comes at rather drab
hope you feel better soon!
Love your posts!
Enjoyed your work on Fallout London good sir.
Really underated xenos, their portrayal in Perturabo: Hammer of Olympia was horrifying.
Wish GW and Black Library writers would utilise them, along with other lesser xenos, more.
Maybe eventually give them a model (doubt).
