I got the cold steel version of the messer. The first sword they delivered was assembled wrong (cross-guard was on left instead right) and the replacement was bent slightly.
Thought the same thing when i saw the amount he was putting up for sale. I mean come on most of the videos I get TWO consecutives ads before i can see it, and skall's video gets a meager banner at the bottom ?
Never tried one of their swords, but i bought a kukri machete from them 8 odd years ago and i use it for everything, it's still in great shape. Its an absolute workhorse
Yeah, as far as I can tell they make good "modern" stuff like knives and machetes. But swords, not so much. I am actually getting one of their practice Rondel Daggers soon. I wouldn't recommend their practice swords, but their buckler and maybe Rondel are good
Yes technically, especially for Messers, but knife forging and construction is radically different from swords. Cold Steel makes their stuff heavy duty, their knives are tough and sharp. But having a really durable tough knife does not translate into what you want for a sword. But I think it's nice that they are making swords to get into the market and appeal to HEMA people. Perhaps in the future they will improve
good knives??? that's debatable. I've never once encountered a decent knife from cold steel, I've seen one snap while chopping wood, and one of their machetes just curl up and die hacking through a pine branch less than an inch thick (seriously I had to hammer the thing back into shape and give it a proper heat treatment afterwards) from my experience their tempering tends to be hit or miss (sometimes dangerously so) same for their choice of steel. there's a reason i refuse to use their products
Good things about both is that they are cheaper, and at least they are not wallhangers. It's also interesting that the MAA Cold Steel messer has a different grind than my regular one. I thinks that's why it came so dull, they probably cut more corners than just doing away with the mirror polish.
What!? A Cold Steel that is dull? Doesn't all of them come with an edge so sharp it cuts through lightsabers and they're so strong, they're also used for chiseling diamonds? Must be a fake! I mean their VERY informing video infomercials on RUclips shows how they are far superior to anything and made out of the purest adamantium!
Actually, they're made of highly concentrated plasma. Or the blade of a lightsaber is. The same goes for the laser rifles, and that's why the lasers do no go at the speed of light, and why they fly through the air and aren't a straight beam.
I wasn't being serious, of course, but that's interesting nonetheless. I'm wondering though - in most cases I've observed plasma, it has been permeable to hard objects, I'm not sure if this is a physical necessity, though.
I picked up their Italian Hand-and-a-Half and it was able to cut paper easily, but I expect it has a similar weakness in that the blade is a bit soft and will nick easily. There's also an ongoing issue that quality is a lottery with Cold Steel.
Just bought a Cold Steel MAA Grosse Messer. It's my first real sword and I'm quite happy with it. It was plenty sharp enough out of the box. Edge had held good. All I would say is the scabbard leather was really dry and tight. After some Ballistol inside and out it loosend up. Other wise I'm pretty happy and it was under $200 on Amazon.
I am not a historical weapons guy per se. I own no swords, axes or otherwise, but I am nonetheless fascinated by your videos. You give such an interesting perspective to me on the historical aspect of things I keep coming back. I may not watch every video you post but I wish you the best and hope you continue to enjoy posting yourself. Best wishes Skall!
I thought I had found an alternate messer from a site called By the Sword in Florida. It looks almost exactly like the Cold Steel but without the black finish and the nail is more like a shelf. The picture was very misleading. The finish on the blade is very rough and uneven. I can only hope the hilt has been welded on in some way I cannot see because the fit on the blade is nonexistent. And it was more expensive than the Neilo to top it all off. This seems to be a version they make themselves or commission regularly. A shame because they had some other weapons which looked interesting. What do you think of the Darksword Armory ring hilt Swiss saber?
If i will buy something in the future and the Albions are the only items left (worst case that hopefully never comes) i would rather give you the money on Patreon/Paypal/Something than to buy one of your Albions from you D: Especially the ones Kara gifted you.
You rock Sallagrim! Keep up the good work! EDIT: I wrote that before I saw the money part. Is there any way for me to just watch hundreds of ads for you to singlehandedly give you money?
Hey Skall, before you sell the Nielo, could you post the length and depth of the fuller? I have full access to a machine shop and want to make a replica because I'm an impatient person and can't be bothered to wait for new production messers. Thanks!
I have recently bought a cold steel halberd and would like to do some test cutting. i have the news paper tatami mats ready and now i just need a good stand.what could i use as a stand to hold the tatami?
Thats actually a shame about the crossguard damage, since the cold steel one was better structurally you'd feel more comfortable doing murder strokes on a opponent with a helm with it, but looks like that would damage the guard a lot.
Hey Skall, did you know that there is someone on Etsy selling a variety of messer styles, complete with Elmslie IDs and everything! I'd love to know how good those are if you do a video on them! I sure love messer style swords and like you mentioned, there are not that many.
I was looking at cheap battle ready swords on KOA, to maybe buy my first sword in the future and was wondering about a few things. Is deepeeka very bad? I've heard negative things about it. How serious is the difference between peened, nut and threaded, and if a sword says the pommel is welded, does that mean it's a rat tail?
Hey Skall, I've been occasionally watching your channel for quite some time and that's great content - thanks for doing it! But later i've watched a lot of those in a row and one thing really caught my attention to the point that I've desided to write it down to get off my mind and maybe get some insight to why things are as they are. The thing is - "cutting" with "swords". That might be some cultural stuff set in language differences, but still it looks/sounds really strange to me. Firstly, in my language (russian) the term "sword" only applies to long bladed weapons with two straight edges that are designed for thrusting, cleaving or both. Curved blades designed for cutting are labled "sabers" (katans included) and straight one-edged blades, like falchions, fall in to the category of combat knives. This kind of classification is well established and represented in current regulations governing the use of melee weapons. And here goes the "cutting" part that bugs me because I don't see the logic behind: cutting requires dragging the blade's edge across target surface - something you phisically can't do with straight blades within single striking motion. When you swing a "sword" it's edge hit the surface flat and chops/cleaves in. It goes through If it can or stucks in, and only then can be pulled towards yourself thus performing a "cut". So here is the thing - why it's called "cutting"? It's not like there are no words in english to describe it more accuratly, so there must be a reason and maybe you or someone else can shed some light on that. And, clearly, I wrote it not to nitpick or anything alike, but because I enjoy digging into reasons behind things, language included. And maybe it'll be interesting for you and others to have some perspective from a point of other language tradition. UPD: Found your video on that topic - clarifies alot, thanks! Apparently, "cut" is a larger term and what I described is a "slice".
Aargh, the adjective is in the wrong Genus for both of the websites! It's langes (long) and großes (great or big) Messer. But it's fine, they're not native speakers (at least i hope so). This normally doesn't bother me, but I think the Nielo Messer just dit it for me, since it's rather accurate otherwise (Taking your word for Skall.).
The cold Steel Man at Arms messer got a slight redesign, that one is available on Amazon, but it has a tiny hilt and from what the reviews say, pretty terrible fit and finish with lots of rattle problems.
not really a question for Skal but anyone from the uk here who has ordered a sword from Kult of Athena, how do they work out the pricing? Is it the same price from $ to £ ($300 sword still costing £300), or is it translated across ($300 to £220) I was interested in starting a collection but am apprehensive because of the pricing all being in $
ahh, thank you! I mean I figured as much with import taxes but I didn't know if they'd just keep the same initial price+ import taxes etc in which case it would be way more expensive
I have to say that Albion one you have is absolutely beautiful. I've been thinking about getting one for a while now. I have a strong addiction to pocket flipper Framelocks and large fighting bowies. In fact I have two beautiful one of a kind custom bowies coming any day now
Hey Skall, could you maybe do a cutting test + review of the cold steel longsword models? (Italian or hand-and-a-half) It would be very interesting to see how they really perform, since the company has its famous commercials, claiming that they make the best swords in the universe ;-)
What do you think about witcher longswords, i know that they are fantasy but they are reasonable. Here are the dimensions (this is from a witcher book, if we consider that the steel is adequate for that kind of sword): "Witcher's swords First sword- siderite steel, ore coming from a meteorite. Blacksmithed in mahakam, dwarvish strongholds. Inch length 40,5 inch. Blade itself- 27,25. Wonderful weighting, weight of the handle is precisely the weight of the blade. Weight of entire weapon under 40 ounces. Craftsmanship of handlebar and handle simple, but ellegant. Other sword, simmilar length and weight, silver. On the handle and entire blade runic signs and glyphs. Bidding price 1000 crowns for set" The things that are not mentioned are the tapers, and flexibility of the blade. So what are your thoughts?
LOL I was about to say that my kreigsmesser cuts like a beast until you explained the difference between the two lines. I've only ever cut myself with those little triangle tabs on the top of the sheath. It is a really shit idea making little thin metal triangles, that get bent up and stab you.
Fanning a revolver guarantees you won't hit anything you're "aiming" at. Sure, it Looks cool. The issue is that you're jarring the weapon every time you fan the hammer. Bad idea.
Skallagrim I have noticed a great increase in your skill, you seem to handle the swords more confidently since I started watching, I think it would be interesting to do a video on how your skills have increased (if... you haven't already made one.) you seem to handle a sword so much better!
Cold Steel does have a new Messer that is actually beautifully Balanced. It's a one handed short sword that with a three sided guard. It's actually quite fitting for the Filipino martial arts style fighting I study. It has about an 18" blade that feels as light and fast as a good Bowie.
He found a job and apartment in Olympia, which is not far from the Canadian border. Currently he is saving up and planning to get some certificates to improve his chances on the job market, while searching for a Canadian employer that is willing and able to go through the hassle of hiring a foreign worker. An employer who knows how to get the paperwork right, of course.
I'd love to own a Skall sword- even if it needs a lot of work- but someone already took the Cold Steel, and I don't have the $250+Shipping to take the Nielo... :(
Hey skall, you made a video in the past about lord of the rings weapons, and said that they were pretty good, but you never looked at the weapons from shadow of mordor and shadow of war. I think there are some actual practical weapons, but there are some whacky ones too. Would be a cool video, good luck in the apocalypse
I dont think thats as big an issue as it seems. its softer then the nielo, doesnt mean its to soft. Its durable enough to be used as a tool it seems, so not an issue. so if youve got a belt sander and can get a good deal on one easy improvement.
Skall, have you looked at the picture of the Kriegsmesser at the Kusthistorisches Museum in Vienna? It's very similar to the Cold Steel one and although it is difficult to tell with certainty, it appears that the only distal taper is in the last few inches of the blade. These were not supposed to be swords. It was against the law of the day for average citizens to own a sword. The one in Vienna seems to demonstrate the non-swordness of it. If I were a guard and saw two men one carrying the Nielo the other carrying the Cold Steel Messers, the guy carrying the Nielo at the very least would have lost his sword, while the guy carrying the CS Messer would be keeping his ridiculously long knife. 🤔
Skall will be living in a tent before selling his Albion Messer.
Why do they call it Cold Steel?
Because they don't heat treat their blades properly.
Chrly Perez
Triggered Cold Steel fanboy inbound
Matthew Pham well, they do make decent knives. Swords... Not so much
cold steel owner here. knives are good, swords are shit
I got the cold steel version of the messer. The first sword they delivered was assembled wrong (cross-guard was on left instead right) and the replacement was bent slightly.
Huh huh. Dassa funny.
"That's not a knoife! -picks up a zweihander-, THIS is a knoife..!"
Indeed.

Cade Flowers Yeah I kinda feel sorry for him woulf love to help him but I cant unfortunately:(
Yes you can. Skallagrim has a Patreon account.
Geralt of Rivia Yeah I know but I am too young I dont earn that much money I am 16 so I cant donate I just carry out newspaper:/

Noyan 74 , Save your money and don't let anyone guilt you into giving it away, especially at your age.
Love your work, Skall! Never a dull moment. Big fan from the Philippines.
You´re getting thinner and thinner, looking really sporty now! Congratulations on the substantial weight loss :)
Dude, I think he's starving because of the Adpocalypse... ;)
It is because youtube is not paying, so he is not eating anymore. Too bad one cant it pommels.
I'm honestly considering picking that Nielo Messer up; either that, or saving up a little more and buying a Lutel Messer.
Cold steel knives: okay
Swords: don't bother
Gjallarhorn
They do make a mean baseball bat
6:32 Freudian slip?
Cold Steel makes some good Knives. But sword smithing is different from a knife. Tho they make a really good synthetic buckler.
Never tried one of their swords, but i bought a kukri machete from them 8 odd years ago and i use it for everything, it's still in great shape. Its an absolute workhorse

A sword is just a fancy long knife /s

Andiders ANYTHING cuts through lightsabers. They're made of fucking light!

you put the messer in backwards, lol
What brand is that black jacket in the chopping clip?
Find someone who looks at you like Skall looks at his messer.
The Cold Steel Kriegsmesser is back in stock at Cult of Athena right now and it has a discount of about 45%
That Ginunting is such a beautiful looking weapon, it's a serious shame you actually have to consider selling it because of the adpocalypse.
It really is, wish I could afford one. XD
Never even knew it existed until I saw Skall's video.
I have one, it really is a fantastic blade. Honestly, every blade from TFW is very top notch.
Im getting my first Spyderco. Yay!

I appreciate the sentiment. :)
Sorry about the ad-pocalypse. But thank you for the great content, and choosing your audience over your collection.
Seems the knecht is discontinued as well now. No messers on the market from anyone at this point.
You rock Sallagrim! Keep up the good work!

I loved the quick edit of the guard test
, you're getting really good that your stance and precision of Blade alignment you're getting badass
Your shirt allown says just how much you like the Albion Messer.
Thanks for the advice for the back order on cult of Athena back order because I want the darksword armory wolfsbane sword
love the almost clip point blade shape of the cold steel one. wish I could find one like that suitable for heavy test cutting
I have recently bought a cold steel halberd and would like to do some test cutting. i have the news paper tatami mats ready and now i just need a good stand.what could i use as a stand to hold the tatami?
The test would still be fun to watch. Even if the sword is hard to get, they are still examples of products from different companies.
shiiit i wanna suport you on patreon , but i cant im in collage
pan liška start by learning how to spell stupid illiterate
Im thinking about getting a swiss sabre. Its a messer, just with a fancier hilt
Thats actually a shame about the crossguard damage, since the cold steel one was better structurally you'd feel more comfortable doing murder strokes on a opponent with a helm with it, but looks like that would damage the guard a lot.
Yeah, the guard is mild, unhardened steel. At least it's mounted securely.
Hey Skall, did you know that there is someone on Etsy selling a variety of messer styles, complete with Elmslie IDs and everything! I'd love to know how good those are if you do a video on them! I sure love messer style swords and like you mentioned, there are not that many.

How serious is the difference between peened, nut and threaded, and if a sword says the pommel is welded, does that mean it's a rat tail?
Hey skal any particular company you know of that makes a decent winged spear? The only ones I have found look cheaply made except for the cold steel.
Hey Skall, have you ever purchased any toys from Goodwill to review the fantasy weapons they're based on? If or if not, please tell me.
Hey Skall, what are your thoughts on the Cold Steel two handed greatsword?
What do you recommend in similar sized swords?
I like this comparisation is this the word for compare ?
MrKlakkos comparison
Have you considered maybe working with Fris Forge to make, test and sell stuff? Or maybe start hawking more shirts and stuff like Shad or Metatron?
Kriegsmesser Katana and longsword cuting test?
Skallagrim, are bladed tonfas practical??
that nielo messer is beautiful, on a sidenote. Damn shame that we won't see them anytime soon, unless they're back now
Nielo is discontinued for some time ( I wanted to buy one after I watched one of your video) but they have a really nice Swiss sabre....
Question:
How easy is it to end your opponent rightly? Also, nice murderstroke.
After you sell the mystery boxes I want to know what was in them
It's so sad that you have to sell your collection. What about a last update of your inventory? To finish that chapter and start a new one :)
10:34 HE PUT THE SWORD IN THE SCABBARD BACKWARDS WHY DOES THIS BOTHER ME SO MUCH!?
UPD:
Found your video on that topic - clarifies alot, thanks! Apparently, "cut" is a larger term and what I described is a "slice".
But can you twist the pommel off?
What do you think about Cold Steel products, in general?
Aargh, the adjective is in the wrong Genus for both of the websites! It's langes (long) and großes (great or big) Messer. But it's fine, they're not native speakers (at least i hope so). This normally doesn't bother me, but I think the Nielo Messer just dit it for me, since it's rather accurate otherwise (Taking your word for Skall.).
Can you do a test on the condor ironside viking sword? Its a low 200 dollar sword.
Or the condor mainz gladius sword?
The cold Steel Man at Arms messer got a slight redesign, that one is available on Amazon, but it has a tiny hilt and from what the reviews say, pretty terrible fit and finish with lots of rattle problems.
+Skallagrim can you make a video on how easily you can break a sword? Love your videos btw!
Hey skall could u maybe make a messer design and maybe get someone to make it like the armor slayer?
I know it's a super slim chance, but do you have any bows you might want to sell, Skall?
not really a question for Skal but anyone from the uk here who has ordered a sword from Kult of Athena, how do they work out the pricing?
Is it the same price from $ to £ ($300 sword still costing £300), or is it translated across ($300 to £220)

I have to say that Albion one you have is absolutely beautiful. I've been thinking about getting one for a while now. I have a strong addiction to pocket flipper Framelocks and large fighting bowies. In fact I have two beautiful one of a kind custom bowies coming any day now
hey skall can you do a vid on the history on messers?
Wait didn't you call the coldsteel one a crowbar before? Well I suppose you'd get at least bit used to it after using it for a while.
If you can ship to Bulgaria, and you ever decide to part with the Gladius, I would be happy to take it off your hands. ^^
Skall just wondering. Are you alright? You look a bit tired or sick.
The cold steel isn't discontinued it was in this years catalog
I know about the regular CS messer, but this is the Man-at-Arms version.
I'm extremely new to the she historical sword fighting scene, I'm looking to get a cheap synthetic practice sword. Any recommendations?
Zer0 The new purple heart synthetics are great, as are black fencer's.
Is the video asynchron ???
Skall - where did you get the double breasted pea coat you're wearing in this video? Been looking for one like that since I lost mine last winter :/
I found that one at a Value Village, so no idea where it originally came from.
Hey Skall, could you maybe do a cutting test + review of the cold steel longsword models? (Italian or hand-and-a-half) It would be very interesting to see how they really perform, since the company has its famous commercials, claiming that they make the best swords in the universe ;-)
skallagrim what is your favorite sword?
The murder stroke on the fallen tree just made me laugh. The timing on that was perfect.
Sounds cool. Sorry you have to go through selling your weapons. With the few I have, I don't think I can bear to part with a single one. 😩
Did they de-monetize your videos?
What do you think about witcher longswords, i know that they are fantasy but they are reasonable.

Awesome, Thank you for the link, I started watching you in about 2013-2014 at the point you were just fooling around in a gym trying things.
Cold Steel does have a new Messer that is actually beautifully Balanced. It's a one handed short sword that with a three sided guard. It's actually quite fitting for the Filipino martial arts style fighting I study. It has about an 18" blade that feels as light and fast as a good Bowie.
skall do you still have your sidesword?? that one looks sick
Yes, and I'm going to hold on to that sidesword unless things get really bad.
hope that never happend!
Just curious whatever happened to swordsage ?
He found a job and apartment in Olympia, which is not far from the Canadian border. Skallageim have you considered Patreon?
Sadly i cant bid for the mystery boxes but i do like the Resolza i might bid for that one
I watched a 2 minute ad hopefully that helps!
You should make a vid going in depth on parrying, at the least edge parrying. I would totally watch that, and who doesnt like a long Skal video?
I'd love to own a Skall sword- even if it needs a lot of work- but someone already took the Cold Steel, and I don't have the $250+Shipping to take the Nielo... :(
Hey skall, you made a video in the past about lord of the rings weapons, and said that they were pretty good, but you never looked at the weapons from shadow of mordor and shadow of war. I think there are some actual practical weapons, but there are some whacky ones too. Would be a cool video, good luck in the apocalypse
is mystery box no.2 still available?
@Skallagrim
Probably not. It's still technically there, but two people have already sent me messages who are interested in it.
Skallagrim okay thankyou
It's a nice review, but it seems very strange to compare two vastly differently priced swords. I don't think it's a fair comparison.
ehh looks like the cold steel messer is still in stock on amazon and such
Yes, but they might just be selling their remaining stock, doesn't mean that the MAA version is still being made. Not sure.
Skallagrim ah I see I see
The cold steel one's black look is kinda nifty. Otherwise, the Niello looks much nicer.
So seems if you had the equipment: add a distill taper to the cold steel, new handle, sharpen and your golden.
You might also want a harder blade and-- oh wait it's a completely new sword...
I dont think thats as big an issue as it seems. its softer then the nielo, doesnt mean its to soft. Its durable enough to be used as a tool it seems, so not an issue. so if youve got a belt sander and can get a good deal on one easy improvement.
The cold steel one looks more suitable as a camping machete, while the other looks like a decent wall-hanger at least.
Murder Strike on log. Log says " you should have thrown the pommel instead."
Not sure if you've made a video on it but you should consider patreon, we would all gladly support you and your content.
Yes, I've mentioned it a few times and the link is also in the video description. www.patreon.com/skallagrim
"You know how much I like the Knecht." ... he says while wearing a shirt with the Knecht on it.
Btw do you still have the buckler? eBay says the sale has ended, but the buckler isn't listed as sold.
