What would it be like to live in this neighborhood? what would the emotional and visual experience be like day to day? I started asking these kinds of questions over a year ago, but it wasn't until this fall that I started spending time here, trying to understand it as an emotional space, and a space that combines derelict, working, and residential aspects. For me the anchor point of the project was the lone house on the corner. I knew I wanted every image to be taken within one block of it, so the project would be build around what the man living there would see every day. I also wanted to include some of his perspective in the project so I was glad I got the opportunity to meet him and chat for a while. He's lived in the house for ten years and has watched the block go through many changes, including the ebb and flow of crime in the area, hundred year old homes being demolished, industrial buildings being built and then demolished, and the rapid encroachment of high density, high rent housing.
As I conceptualized the project I knew I wanted to do it on medium format using Ferrania p30, I thought the high contrast and ultra smooth grain would create an immediacy to the images, and capture the textures of the environment. I also felt like the area is very much of the moment, while also having strong references to the past and passing of time for which Ferrania P30 is well suited for.
