  • Hello everyone and welcome back to my channel for another video. Today I want to discuss buying and flipping Hot Toys for profit and if its fair? I know this often looked down upon and the term "scalping" is used but who is to blame for this cycle? The seller? The Buyer? or Hot Toys themselves?
    Lets discuss...

I’m glad you made this. Collectors get so bent outta shape at other collectors that are smart and do their best to fund their collections by buying and selling for a profit. I appreciate all the exclusives because they help fund my collection. That’s the way it is. Like it or don’t like it I don’t care. My money, my collection. I’m not forcing anyone to pay aftermarket prices

The bigger issue I have is the eBay sellers posting listings for pre-orders. That’s pretty shady in my opinion. You only have protection for so long and if the seller screws you over then you’re SOL.

That is a dangerous thing regarding the preorders for sure

Great video mate! I’ll be honest I never liked the idea of people making money off fellow collectors!! But then I realised I often buy from resellers who are essentially just flipping Hot Toys (just with less of a markup than eBay sellers)! 😅

I’m not paying $1000 for any figure, I don’t care if it jumps off the shelf and cleans my fucking house. Wtf… 😂

I 100% agree with you. I'm not selling something at retail to be man of the people if the market is worth double. I have the joker, anakin, and dark side luke on preorder. I don't forsee me selling joker or anakin, but if I'm not feeling luke when he comes out I'm absolutely willing to sell at market value. Did I buy it to sell it? No. But doesn't mean I'm a terrible person if I do. Agree on the deals too, grabbed carnage deluxe for $388 shipped from lion rock toyz on black Friday, and it may be my favorite figure in the entire collection.

I don't have a problem people trying to flip Hot Toys, more power to them.
If someone wants it bad enough and pay that ridiculous price it's a win for both parties.

The exclusivity was something many collectors were begging for for the last few years, now that we see what that looks like many are likely rolling back on that sentiment. Even their “standard” release figures are selling out during the pre-order period so I can’t say for certain if FOMO is unjustified these days.
At the same time, if it means HT could possibly focus on producing limited less likely to sell to the masses side characters in the future I am torn. If that’s what it takes to give HT confidence to commit to the completion of more lines I guess it’s a good thing? Only time will tell what kind of monster that will create.
Paying double the price of a figure that hasn’t even released yet is something that should make every single collector pump the brakes and think critically about what they’re about to commit to.
In the case of Anakin, I’ve commented on your video on the past saying that the figure is priced extremely high for something that you cannot even say is the definitive version like some could say about the DX28 or the upcoming RotJ version.
On the other hand, if people are already paying $500-$600+ on the 2018 release on the secondary market most are probably just gonna jump at any price for the technically advanced artisan figure.
I definitely think we are in another transitionary period within the hobby, we will see what happens

Yeah the issue isn't the fact that someone would behave like an opportunist and sell stuff for profit, the issue is that HT facilitates this behavior by having such limited releases. If fingers need to be pointed then its HT they should be pointing to. Personally I don't even care about HT choosing to have limited releases, heaps of companies do this so it is what it is.

Honestly, I don’t mind people reselling a figure for profit, the issue I suppose is when they buy up a big bulk of a limited product and then flip it, so people who would have bought at retail now can’t. Honestly it’s not too bad in this hobby but resellers/scalpers are a nightmare in some other areas. The PS5 being a prime example. It’s definitely not a black and white subject though. There are also eBay fees sellers have to account for when selling, obviously that doesn’t account for the prices you reviewed in the video lol

I agree I don’t see it being to bad with hot toys personally myself

Value is determined by what you are willing to pay for it.
The concept of flipping toys isn’t new. Let’s look at it from the company’s perspective. Their priority is their own bottom line, not collectors’ happiness. So restricting supply to inflate “value” is nothing new. This applies to high end bags, timepieces etc. Hermes bags are flipped over and over again.
The people complaining are those who didn’t do the flipping. I know. I was mad when a certain figure I wanted sold out in 1 sec and people were flipping them. I found myself cursing them before calming down and deciding how much more I would pay . I eventually got it from someone 8 months later cos he couldn’t hold onto it anymore and needed it liquidated. By then, the initial buzz for that figure had already died.
The problem isn’t the flipping, it’s the people enabling them, the ones who pay a king’s ransom. As long as there is a willing buyer, there will be a willing seller. If people can make up their minds to not support ridiculous prices, they will die out.
The real question, I feel, is how can we overcome irrational spending due to out-of-control fomo? Are boxes upon boxes of unopened toys really gonna fix what’s broken in our lives?

Valuable thoughts here! The fomo will always be there, something will always keep it alive. Collectors will only learn when they become overwhelmed and have to make sacrifices unfortunately

Nothing is fair in life. If you buy.......buy with confidence or don't buy at all. We all adults here.......act like one.

It’s one of those things that doesn’t effect me, 50% of my figures are used and I look for deals. TBH once you let go of that BOX stigma you can find some amazing figures loose. Cheaters gonna cheat, haters gonna hate and bitchers are gonna bitch. Nothin’ we can do about it.

If There Was no Flipping there Would Not Be a Secondary market.

In any type of collecting the collection funds itself, all items that anyone buys will eventually move in one way or another to fund for another piece. Collecting is a big budget for whatever it is you like. This country is built on capitalism and if you own a business or not its the way it works in any hobby, I got it you want it I will make a profit of it you don't like it move on or buy somewhere else.🦇🦇🍻
