If this music created by human ingenuity and intelligence is profoundly exhilarating how much more must be the profound must be the quality of music we will experience in heaven in the presence of God?
Just spent a whole afternoon listening to every version of this, for about the 10th time. This is my favourite. Always remember that in *Saul* it depicted the awfulness of mass death in war, not one person's funeral march.
play iy nightly just in case I don't wake up next day & have requested it to be streamed at my funeral: -have to remember to be quick to turn off the applause tho
He was born in Halle (Germany) - that's where this was live recorded - and was 25 years old, when he visited London for the first time and stayed there für one year. Finally when he was 27 Händel settled in London for the rest of his life. He became a British citizen when he was 42 years old in 1727.
De Duitse Bundeswehr speelt deze Trauermarsch bij de uitvaart van hoogstaande personen uit de Duitse politiek, zoals bij de uitvaart van Helmut Kohl. Zeer indrukwekkend.

Played at the May 1910 funeral of King Edward VII. Lord Esher wrote in his diary afterward "There never was such a break-up. All the old buoys which have marked the channels of our lives see to have been swept away."
Yep 👍 her funeral at Westminster Abby will be the first of a reigning monarch since George II. Every other funeral from George III to George VI as taken place at St George’s chapel Windsor.
Just listened to this performance after listening to Stokowski's lush Late Romantic orchestration in order to compare that with what Handel himself wrote. Stokowski gilded the lily here. Handel stands on his own magnificently.
Stokowski over gilded the lily and really detracted from the beauty of this great piece. Handel's great piece stands much better on its own so performances that stay truer to his vision are always better.
Especially when you consider the early musical environment of his day, all sewing-machine rhythm and no melody. His 'O had I Jubal's Lyre' is tuneful perfection.
@@jennieeagle1257 I think Roger Propes is referring to the 'sewing-machine" rhythmic quality of so much of Bach's musical writing , the Brandenburg Concertos in particular , into which we were initiated as teenagers Bach was into the bones of music... the harmonies and inner lines Handel was into the beauty of music
Beslis. Die mooiheid van die stuk word nooit waardeer by begrafnisse nie. Buitendien speel die meeste orreliste dit net te stadig en hartseer. Ek het onlangs dit gehoor op hierdie tempo... Net orrel en tromme. Dit was so mooi
That is an awful version to be honest. Wasn't Stokowski's best moment by far. He over orchestrated the piece and made it slow, dull and boring. This performance is much, much more appropriate for this great piece by Handel
My brother was in South African special forces. When he was kia, the military bands played this at his funeral while they slow marched to his grave. It was terrible, a beautiful pics of music, but absolutely terrible.
Obviously your use of the word 'terrible" has positive connotations; unlike most uses of this word. But I fully understand you and may your brother Rest in Peace!
As an amateur, I play the alto part on a (modern pitch) bass recorder, accompanying a descant player. This rendering is hauntingly atmospheric, with delightful double dotting.
What a WONDERFUL comment, Pauline. It would be plagiaristic of me to imitate you, so I refrain out of respect. I would add, if I may, that what grabs me is the appropriately sour tone of the trombones/sackbuts. No one else gets even close. As for the flutes, appropriately, again, mournful, are there really 4 flute parts in the original, or has Arman doubled them? In the circumstances, perfectly legitimate.
Fuer uns alle kommt der Tag die Stunde des Abschieds, so last uns leben wie es Gott will. Vielleicht kann bei meinem Begraebnis am Ausgang der Kirche gespielt warden, wenn auch nur per Cassette.

the music is sooo beautiful I really enjoyed it. Thank you for this lovely oratorio. Good Job everyone well played, well done.
Bitte ich wolte das bei meine beerdigung.
Brings tears to my eyes!
I do liked this piece that I always said it must be played on my funeral. But I will scared the mourners to just sit up for a while to listen
Schitterende uitvoering en opname. Bedankt!
Zum heulen schön!
A thrilling performance of this beloved classic at a time in Pavarotti's long career when he had everything working for him vocally.
sehr sehr gut !
Un thème très connu bien interprété
Today it is played at Helmut Kohl's funeral
Yes, I saw
Did they also applaud in the end, like here in this video?
This is a Beautiful Piece of music,I can not hear it Often enough...Any Way to get this Recording?

Nice to hear!
thanks
😔
This is a bloody march! Why on earth is nobody marching?
Maybe they're too mesmerized by the beauty of Handel's music. That's why nobody is marching.
If this music created by human ingenuity and intelligence is profoundly exhilarating how much more must be the profound must be the quality of music we will experience in heaven in the presence of God?
Pretty to think so, eh?

I have done the same Azure. I just love this piece and just about any version drives me to tears.
so wunderschön, ich empfinde trauer und hoffnung bei diesem lied..
zur zeit höre ich es täglich..
It would be nice if the orchestra was identified. I do not understand why people post music here without identifying the performers.

The English Concert from Marktkirche Halle.Orchestra: Hallenser Madrigalisten Orchester.Conductor: Howard Arman.

What a fantastic performed piece of music. The best I have heard. Excellent and beautiful.

Many thanks for sharing this with us. I think Haendel would be proud on the performance of this orchestra !!! Just great !!!!
Beautifully played, with great solemnity. Brass, strings and woodwinds all in perfect harmony. Most moving performance...

Congratulations! Very exquisite! The trombones, usually associated with the supernatural world are wellcome!
wonderful and deeply moving interpretation of Handels music....

Too slow?? It's a funeral march! One doesn't hurry in a funeral...
I was just thinking it was too fast! I love it taken very slowly.
Specially your own.
I'm a very busy man.
Astounding and deeply moving all at once. Truly sublime.
Fabulous-makes the hairs on back your neck rise and tears at your guts!

I always liked this piece because my son's funeral the band had played this piece.

Yes, indeed it is.

Quite a peculiar way of Handel's appreciation!
Bh
It's usually played at British State funerals but it wasn't played at the funeral of Queen Elizabeth ll.
It was played in the state funeral of her father King George VI, but you're quite right, not heard in the Her Majesty's funeral.

It's Howard Arman.
