Edible Mushroom I.D. Series (Vid#1): Oyster! Catch and cook!

- Опубликовано: 20 дек 2018
- Join us as we gather wild oyster mushrooms, review the two best mushroom identification books on the market, and cook up our famous M n O's!!!!!
* NOTE: I referenced "Angel Wings" as the coastal variant of oyster mushrooms. This is incorrect. The white delicate coastal oyster mushrooms are in fact oyster mushrooms, angel wings are smaller and nearly identical in shape though they are far more common on conifer trees (which oyster mushrooms do not prefer).

Thank you for the kind words and for taking the time to comment!
omggg, I love watching these mushroom i.D 's and where u eat them. Please keep making more of these !!!
Thanks! We were filming one today!
Thank you sooooo much for doing a series on mushroom foraging!!! I love it!
Cool video post! I am here for the Spearo content, but I dig everything outdoors. Which leads me to.......back in 84 (yes, as in 1984....dont laugh!!) I took an undergrad Botany class called "Poisonous and Edible Plants." The Prof, a Biology PhD with her concentration in Botany. She refused to instruct on mushrooms, stating that even she will only harvest/ingest wild mushrooms when she afield with one who is well trained in mushrooms. She was an old hippie from the 60's Nor-Cal and told us about stories from that time period where hippies would get deathly ill from consuming wild mushrooms. I was kind of bummed by not learning about mushroom because during that period of time (and still today) I was in the Central and Southern Sierra's backpacking all of the time, and would see all kinds of mushrooms. I was/am too afraid to touch them, not having any formal education or hands on experience. Love your videos, keep up the great work, be safe!👍
It is a very real risk! But so is eating mussels in the wrong time of year. It is all about being meticulous and not glossing over the details. Come take a mushroom identification course with me some time if you can!
Love the crunchiness!
That made my mouth water. I love fried mushrooms and onion rings but I would have to have ranch dressing for dipping lol.
Second!!!!! Love your vids. Keep up the amazing work and THANK YOU for all the info you share. Be safe and keep bringing the content!!!!
Thanks so much for your encouragement! Comments like these drive us to keep trying new things to share with ya'll!
welcome
The audio was a little low on my end but nice Ulu great foraging the M&O's looked awesome you and Taku of Outdoor Chef Life got me itching to try coastal foraging plz keep up with the great content
Excited for this! I'm in the Midwest and have been wanting to get into mushroom foraging for a while, but was unsure of how to go about getting into it. I'll definitely get those books before I try to go out! Thanks!
Nice! Try to link up with a mycological society in your area too. It is always best to go with those more experienced than yourself... but bring the book and fact check them to be sure the ID is right. Happy foraging!
very informative. thx. BTW that's a very cool way to open a bottle!
Thanks! Hillbilly ingenuity right? lol
Awesome episode with Lot's to Learn, Thanks for sharing and making it fun. P. S. Mochi is soooo cute !!! 💗🐾👍
Thanks!
I FINALLY MADE IT TO INTRO OF MOCHI!
Your channel is so inspiring!
Thanks Dan!
I bought the small book years ago for my cousin, he does not forage, but he enjoys ID information.
Sooo cool.
Thanks! Uploading the second video in this mushroom ID series today. Stay tuned!
Hey that's an interesting poster in the background I think it's of mushrooms but could be flowers 🤔
Thanks, yeah it's a bunch of old mushroom illustrations with the common names in French.
thank you mushroom man!!!!
My pleasure! Happy hunting, and remember... don't eat anything that I wouldn't!
Awe, you guys are too cute.👍
What part of California are you all from? A couple of the videos looked like they might be near Santa Cruz but others look like they're a bit further north.
I've been living abroad for a couple years and these videos are a great reminder of home. Thanks for making them!
We are in the Nor Cal central valley, but we do travel throughout the state on these adventures. Thanks for watching!
i love seals
I just discovered your channel a couple of days ago and I've been binge-watching it every since. I have to ask what was the sauce that you were dipping the mushrooms and onion rings in
Glad you are enjoying the channel! It was just ketchup, nothing crazy. Just got our first mushrooms of the season this week. Videos coming soon!
Great video. Which month was this recorded?
Thanks! Nov-Dec of 2018 I think. But now is the time for sure!
Where we live, we have zero access to any foraging classes, and have to depend on these books and videos 100% I suppose the safest way for us to do this, is to focus on morels in Spring, and chanterelles in the fall, and skip the rest of them entirely. I'd very much appreciate your thoughts on this!
Whereabouts? Depending on where you are located there may be a few other species that have very few or no poisonous look-alikes in your area.
Great video! Where did you buy the knife?
Thanks! My brother made the knife for me. The handle is laminated birch bark (a centuries-old design).
I am going to buy those books as we have mushrooms here in Wyoming. I have always wanted to find out what is edible as other than morels I had no idea. I tried to grow oyster mushrooms but I think our lack of humidity was the culprit. Looking forward to this series.
Glad the video helped! Those books are AWESOME!!!! I am sure you will enjoy them for years to come!
Is there a method for finding someone in my locale to coach me?
@@elkhunter76 Google search a mycological society near you. Then email them and ask if they lead fungi walks. If there is no such group near you, try the mycology department at the nearest university. Great question!
I tried it and nothing showed up in Wyoming. We have 1 university which is 200 miles away.
@@elkhunter76 Bummer. What kinds of trees grow in your area and what elevation are you at? Maybe we can help narrow down some species that you might encounter.
First!
Hi. I was wondering what’s your recipe for the batter? Looks so good.
It's my standard. Nothing fancy. Great on fish too! Just a cup of flour, 1/4 tsp paprika or chili powder, and 1/8 tsp salt. Stir in beer until it reaches pancake batter consistency and fry until golden brown. Enjoy!
Catch N Cook California Thank you. I’m definitely going to try it. Do you use regular flour or all purpose?
one that got me about experts is a story told by ray mears friend proffesor gorden hillman who knows fungi yet was still poinsioned by one that had been miss identified then went and had a beer it nearly killed him and he was an expert and the place he got the mushroom from was filled with experts it was on wild foods a bbc tv show it was episode 5 in case you like to watch,
I remember that episode all too well! Yeah, that's why we have a set of about 5-10 foolproof mushrooms that we enjoy, but have no interest in those with potentially serious look-alikes. This is also why I never let others identify wild mushrooms for me.
Would this book work in the south such as Texas?
The book specifies that it is for Western North America, so yes, I think it should be fine. Many of the same species will overlap. Good luck and be 100% positive on your identification before eating any wild fungi... or plant for that matter!
What book is that please reply
All That the Rain Promises and More by David Arora
whats the name of the books
Mushrooms Demystified, and All That the rain Promises and More, both by David Arora. Thanks for watching!
