IndyCar is criminally underrated. I feel like both NASCAR and F1 fans would love this sort of thing if they had more exposure to it. You can't deny how insane this engine sounds around an oval.
Chicagoland may be no more, but I’d say watching memorable finishes like this one eases the pain.
What happened was, Ganassi actually tried to cheat. They purposely mounted their scoring transponder upside-down in the car, because one day, they discovered that it somehow effectively "tricked" the scoring antenna wire embedded in the track. The computer scoring system monitors all showed Dixon's car crossing the line first, so it wasn't ABC's fault for calling the wrong winner. In fact, their S/F line camera "saved the day" in all reality. Since this incident, the proper installation of the scoring transponders in the cars is more scrutinized by technical inspection.

Wow, thank you for the explanation! You the man!
From where you know?
Yeah, the video pretty much showed that the Target car did not win.
I don't see that as cheating, just mismounting the darn thing. I would let them off with a warning: but if that's repeated, than I'll start having penalties.
Beside, even if mounted perfectly, the margin of error was .0006 seconds.
To avoid this, indycar had a high speed camera taking picture every tenth of a thousand of a second. And two high-frame-rate cameras connected to a digital video system. These 3 cameras recorded every single passing of the start-finish line.
Technically, a transponder could have fallen off in a crash, and some driver could have finish the race on 3 wheels and the IRL could have been able to tell the time he took to finish the race. Even if the transponder was sending signals from miles off the track.
Maybe they can cheat with the transponder, but what's the point if measures exist to catch that?
Doesn't surprise me.
I like it when Dixon leads or wins because I get to look at Emma
minute 3:20, he tell Catroneves (Penske Car), that he won the race. Then Dixon (Target Car) celebrates because he won the championship
2:28 "SHOPPING MONEY!!!!"
Helio won for a thousand of a second, maybe more than that, but it was simply amazing!! Also the Three Wide during 94 to 96 laps was one of the coolest things I've ever seen.
The race goes... To Castro-Dixon!
The start/finish line counts as a scoring loop so Castroneves won the closest indycar finish
very cool, but the guys doing commentary should have been more excited.
Leigh Duffey or whatever his name is makes everything sound exciting
people! Dixon (Target Car) won the championship, but Castroneves (Penske Car) won the race, you have to pay more attention!
David Madrigal Mesa but... apparently Castroneves won his first oval race Phoenix 2017 according to commentators and himself
Revisiting this years later both men deserve honor for clean good racing.
3:52 - "Which one of these timing lines is the one you've gotta cross?"
Which one do you think it is??? The damn finish line! (I understand what he's getting at, but really?)
2:25 6th place R.I.P. Dan Wheldon
Please comeback to Chicago IndyCar
i love castroneves reaction
what a roaring crowd. never heard such an exciting audience.
lol
+Jacob Gaitan the crowd goes crazy when dale jr gets the lucky dog after a debris caution
A few years ago, we had finishes all the time like this in IndyCar.
Goosebumps
Vi esse Gp de Chicago vencido pelo Helio Castro Neves num duelo com o scott dixon foi demais
Very good scoop and filming fotage could really be a hint about todays ways of show it on tv and so. Exiting race cool enginesounds and the speed is impressing.
I wish Indycar would go back to Chicagoland
It’s being demolished to make room for warehouses. I’m so sorry, dude.
Dixon and Helio are my top 2 favorites in Indycar
Cool finish.
I had seats right in the finish line and my bro shot the best picture EVER of this finish.
you guys are all excited about this close finish, we get close finishes all the time in NASCAR.
sin agulla y pombo la indy no es lo mismo aguante latinoamerica, nadie le pone mas emocion a los relatos q los latinoamericanos
Wheldon had a exciting 3-wide challenge in the race, how exciting :(,now we cant see it
i was there
It was second closest actually. What a finish!
I miss Chicagoland.... :/
I wish I lived in America, Indycar is Ace, would love to go to a race.
all these close ass finishes at chicago....y did they stop racing here??
I think they stopped going to those kinds of ovals after Dan Wheldon's fatal crash at LVMS.
"What?"
XD
Damn, Castroneves kick ass in this race! 28th to 1st!! He is my second favorite driver (TK is the first). 2009 season is coming up, go TK, go Castroneves! (Yes, i'm a brazilian :D)
I remember watching this live and still today I think GOD DAMN IT when they cross the line. However it is easy to see that Helio losses momentum in the late center section of 4 and he knew it when it happened. Just a damn shame. Both great drivers though, I will admit
This is the 2nd alltime closest IndyCar finish.
ISSO QUE É CORRIDA
@Robert265283 the description explains it all... Team Panske won the race (white) but Dixon (target) won the championship through points.
can we have a repeat this year
"You can't have asked for a better scenario. Dixon and Castronevas 1 & 2 in the points running 1 & 2 in the race." Stewart and Edwards "Bitch please."
It was Helio who won, it was not Dixon.
Come back to Chicago IRL!
I'm sure he was thanking Briscoe. by tucking in behind Castroneves, he created just enough draft down the straight to push the 3 car across first.
dam that was tttooooo close dam
Awsome race, who first love indycars, they look cool
Indy Cars are fucking cool
There is only one "Iceman" and his name is Raikkonen
I was at this race. Couldn't tell who the winner was and my dad refused to stay and figure out cuz he wanted to beat the traffic leaving
actually the last photo finish was in '02
@19pizzapuff Initally the results said that Scott won, but shortly after they changed it to Helio
What go faster these or f1 cars? Also what are the engine specs?
i cant believe indy car got rid of chicagoland...
and the Engines are branded by a Japanese motor company and chassis built in Italy.
Tony George needs to take a think about all this.
time to change the title of the video. Peter Dempsey owns it now
They changed the official time on it, unfortunately, it's now the second closest finish in IRL history. Man, what a great race though!
Sebastien Bourdais drove in the 2002 INDY 500, a IRL sanctioned event
Hey it does!!!
I got to say the 3 car won from that finish
Scott Dixon's wife is gorgeous, hes a lucky bastard AYE!!!!!
Emma Dixon is very beautiful!!
@BrianRichterWWE Well, whenever you are at a track were its foot on the floor for 300 miles, there isnt much you can do to make a complete pass on the guy. Thats why Indy at Chicago and Michigan is some of the best racing on Earth.
Ahhh poor Dixon... that's gotta be somewhat embarrassing. BUT - he's still got a championship out of it... I'm sure he's happy regardless.
I don't see where I did.
Honda brands the engines ==> Japanese Company (designed/manufactured/assembled in cooperation with Ilmor)
Dallara constructs the carbon-tub ==> Italian Company last I checked.
@palkomike23 you don't like explosions?
So glad these open wheel cars aren't driving around in circles all year anymore
You ever see Micheal Schumacher tell Jacques Villeneuve hes crazy and a dangerous driver for passing Schumacher on the outside at the Portugal Grand Prix for the win? Villeneuve laughed in his face and said come try and race on an Indy Oval..... The amount of balls required to do what they do at the speed they do is insane.... a lot of drivers are not cut out for it.
Yep now it's just follow the leader road and street racing
Whats the top speed these cars do?
haw many mph? and rpm max?
@KingCuervo88 Indycar used the same point system they had used all year, while the NASCAR fight was set up by the chase.
Was a good title fight, but you can't make that comparsion.
I'm from Europe so I'm not following Indy Car sooo closely... got confused (Indy, CART). There also was Mario Andretti, but he didn't much in F1... On the other hand there was Nigel Mansell going from F1 to CART Indy in 1993 and winning it. We'll see what USF1 can do next year... Greetings!
Danica Patrick 10Th
indy racing is like jersey shore when compared to F1
LMAO "You are the winner of the race."
"AHAHAHA No way I knew it!!!" LOL
haw many mph/h?
sooooo who won da championship?
@person5598 The new head of Chicagoland Speedway said recently that Indycar should be back for 2012 season. (Thank God.)
How'd that go?
@@madc2004 Haha not too good, obviously. But they started racing at Milwaukee Mile after that, and those were fun times...
That guy says 'Race track'.... where is the race ?
@NASCARWWEclubpenguin thts what i thought
Indycar should've just renewed a contract with Chicagoland instead of going back to Texas.
No,did castroneves actually win?
better than F1
@greengrass313 yeah, we knew helio won too. It was a rediculas finish though to.
@dysfac technology is a detail... The important is a emotion from competition...
NASCAR IS A CIRCUS!!! Formula One it's only tecnology, no sportscar...
@nathankrug Of course NASCAR would throw a yellow flag on the last lap and have 5 restarts after the last lap to get it that close.
2nd closest finish in indycar
How do you mess that up? lol
@anthcybo
Not so sure. F1 do not run with such low downforce setups either. I think an F1 with proper wings and engine simply retuned would run faster. With a F1 low downforce setup (which is like a medium setup on IRL car) they reach something like 225 at Monza I believe. BAR ran a modified F1 car with minimum downforce in a straight line speed test - 257mph.
😃😃😃😃😃😃😃☺☺☺☺☺
They stopped racing at all the tracks owned by ISC (which is owned by NASCARs france family)
It looked pretty obvious to me that Helio won the race.
Anyone else hear the ear-piercing noise that makes it sound like it was videotaped from a tube TV?
I guess they need to up the frequency of the signal.. I don't know what it is now, maybe 24khz or 24,000 updates a second. Seems fast, but they were closer than that. How about a 5.8Ghz signal? 5.8 billion cycles a second. Not going faster than that I hope.
Chicagoland, Texas Motor Speedway, and Indianapolis are the only exciting ovals left on the schedual now that they don't race at Michigan International Speedway or Fontana..i guess Homestead is ok too...but the other ovals are horrible
press 5 to skip to the finish
Lieing? What am I lieing about? If there's something wrong with what I posted, let me know and quote your valid source. I'm all eyes and ears if I'm wrong about something.
#milkanddonuts
actually right now, it is only 1000 ft for funny car, and top fuel. 1/4 mile is 1320 ft.
Montoya...
I was being sarcastic.
castroneves wins ?
leandro garcia yes
but there's a lot of americans who likes castroneves too!
that high-pitch noise is a turnoff
