  • The epic start of making a new spindle for the small lathe. A quick walk-through of the design. And start to make the housing for the new spindle.
    Many clips are speeded up, by a factor 32. It really does take a loooong time to do all the turning.

    I suggest you try a larger diameter boring bar if you can get your hands on one. Interesting project

    At 16.47... I strongly suggest you to replace the top bearing with a sleeve made of polypenco.

    Is this a spindle project for a lathe that you are showing turning on this video? I bet that bearings are held between two springy walls of the head casting, just like on my C6128 lathe. I am sure that this upgrade will pay off and I'm waiting patiently to see if that is going to be my next upgrade. Although I have been thinkering on fixing this issue by pouring Epoxy Granite in side of the head stock and providing just enough room for the spindle shaft. I guess that EG would also be possible in your case... Good luck and keep us updated!

    Why is there no hole thru the spindle for machining shafts and longer pieces of bar stock

    • @metalmusings
      @metalmusings  4 года назад

      It can come later, can be bored out while in place.

    Fantastic project, I'm looking forward to following your progress.
    Did you use any references for designing your spindle, in terms of bearing arrangement, etc? Or just experience and instinct?

      A lot of googling but two main sources. From skf.com for the bearings www.skf.com/binaries/pub12/Images/0901d19680495562-Super-precision-bearings-catalogue---13383_2-EN_tcm_12-129877.pdf and a Master's Thesis www.diva-portal.org/smash/get/diva2:930493/FULLTEXT01.pdf

    Hello, it seems your rpm is to high or you did not have enough feed rate.I think that is your problem. you can try to calculate the proper feed rate with a online calkulator or search for the formula with google. Greetings from Germany

    • @metalmusings
      @metalmusings  4 года назад

      I have tried everything. I try to keep around 100 m/min and then adjust feed parameters. But it is sensitive.

      @@metalmusings Yup, could be that your litle machine is not rigid enough and you got bad vibrations . Have you tried to atach a big cast iron weight do reduce vibration? Cast iron is very good in reducing vibrations and you could possibly dial in the resonance frequency of your machine so that it is not in the freuency range that you are using when working with it.

    Is that regular boring bar or you got carbide one?

    • @darkobul1
      @darkobul1 4 года назад +1

      They sell carbide ones that apparently have less vibrations

    • @metalmusings
      @metalmusings  4 года назад

      I only use carbide tip tools.

      @darkobul1 4 года назад

      @@metalmusings they make boring bar also out of carbide that holds same carbide inserts you use. It was about 40+$ i saw in ebay. They say it reduces vibration in comparison with regular boring bar made of tool steel.

    Interesting CNC lathe! I assume you converted it yourself?

    • @metalmusings
      @metalmusings  4 года назад

      Yes indeed. I don't have any videos of the conversion. But it was an adventure mostly since I didn't have a proper milling machine.

    • @metalmusings

      It was a cheap 619/6 ball bearing. No brand, but they can be marked with any name I've heard.
