Hey can I ask what wood did you use to initially make the shelf supports and is this on a hollow wall or solid? Thanks
Hiya, I used 3x2 cls timber. The wall on the left was the external wall so I used rawl plugs. The wall to the right was a stud wall so I screwed into the timber stud.

What if you don't have stud on either end for the length of your shelf?

Pretty sure that's not a floating shelf....the idea is it's mounted only on 1 wall. Hence "Floating"
You're right an alcove shelf would be a better name. But everyone calls them floating shelves so I went with the more obvious option.
I think most people refer to these as floating as well simply because it doesn't have any ugly brackets like normal shelves.
