Got the USB 3 adapter for iPhone 13 and used a Rugged Raid pro- has a built in sd card reader. It works like a charm! The only downside is that I do need power for the Lacie Rugged. Upside: I don't need to bring my laptop on a motorcycle trip AND less cords. I can even view the RAW files on my phone! WINNING!
Thank you for this. I was looking for a video on how this worked for iPhone specifically. BTW I don't know if this is something they've changed for iOS 13, but at 7:35 you don't have to scroll all the way to the bottom to tap and hold for the New Folder dialog. You can tap and hold in any blank space between folder icons to get the dialog. You can also keep scrolling to the top and that will eventually bring more buttons and one of them is a New Folder Button.
This was extremely helpful! Can i also follow these same steps while using an iPad? I am going on an Antarctica expedition and I do not want to take my MAC to transfer my photos and videos
Hi 👋🏻 I have this 256GB password protected thumb drive the iPad can’t seem to access due to a password app embedded in the drive... however, other drives do work. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain the process!
go to your friend mac if you dont have a computer, plug the thumb drive, right click one the drive and select 'decrypt' and try again on your ipad. this works for me.
I plan to use a 5T external HD to store all of my videos and projects when I am at home. And I plan to use a 1T external SD drive to dump footage off of my iphone while on a shoot. If I use a SD drive will my transfer speeds be faster then the HD drive while on a shoot. Your transfer speeds are mainly Bc of the read snd write speeds of your external HD and not Bc of the phone capabilities. Is that correct? I know iOS is limited to read and write. But the Samsung T5 or T7 would be better to dump to while on a shoot? Correct? My issue is while I’m on a shoot “using my iPhone” I run out of space.. So my plan is to have the external SD to dump my footage onto it while I’m on a shoot. And keep doing that every time I run out of space. And then once I’m home. I can edit off of my external SD. And then once my project is done. I can dump it onto my external HD while I’m home and not restricted by time. That way I can have projects and videos saved and And be able to delete and free up the space on my SD and IOS. Device. Any feedback on this workflow would be greatly appreciated. Also I have a power bank I use to charge my phone while on a shoot. I wonder if I need a usb hub that can be charged with my power bank.
I read someone had success by plugging in their Mac 30W into the adapter directly and the HDD booted. I’m trying to find out how to do this portably. There are 30W portable chargers online. I want to power a hub and transfer SD to HDD from iPhone, but not sure if the adapter powers the hub as well. If so I can have a full portable work station, no wall power required.
Unfortunately, it doesn't work on me. I tried my iphone8, 10, and iPad. Even I don't use the hub, I am not able to use camera adaptor with my SSD external drive. Not sure it is bcoz the latest OS.
this is so what I need. my hub isn't working for some reason. It's not a powered hub nut I have the phone plugged into power. Do I need a powered hub to work?
You mention the Sandisk SSD, but I tried plugging in that drive, even with a charger connected, and my iPad said it couldn’t use the drive because it drew too much power. But it could just be the hardware I am using - I have a cheap Lightning adapter that has both cars readers and USB in one device. Can you recommend a device that lets me simultaneously connect the Sandisk SSD and a micro SD card? I am running the Grand Canyon in January and will be recording the rapids with a VIRB 360. I would really like to be able to back-up as much of the footage as I can along the way, and expect to run out of space on both my iPad and my iPhone. But it looks like I’m definitely going to need a faster adapter.
You need to have power connected to the hub in order to power the SSD. That's the only way it works. Here's a link to my updated video: ruclips.net/video/sXHuy62nbRw/видео.html
@@ALinsdau With the Apple USB adapter and Lightning power it works fine. Sorry to barrage you with comments. I think I may have a working solution now, just waiting on a faster card reader.
Hi. I have a question. Can I power my USB hub using 12v car charger. And will it have any negative effects for my LaCie hard drive? It is power through USB c cable that plugs into USB port of the hub. Thank you
Did you try plugging in a super fast portable into the camera adapter and seeing if it powers a USB hub. I’m trying to find a full mobile work flow. I feel like you have all the cables lol
I have an iPhone 6s, a 5T Western Digital HDD, and I use a PC with Windows10. Does the HDD have to have certain settings for the iphone files app and Windows file manager app to be able to read the videos? It's will be 4GB video clips I will be moving from SD to the external HDD. the iphone files app reads/sees the Apple SD dongle (using the UNI hub).
You're welcome. I'll have instructions for backing up an SD to an SSD (solid state drive) using only an iPhone, a USB hub and cheap $10 USB battery shortly.

Hi Aaron, to answer your question the apple Iphone X will only support USB 2 speeds, but the adapter will support USB 3 speeds only the apple IPAD 12 & 10.3 support USB 3.0 speeds. (Maybe the Iphone 11 supports USB 3 speeds?) That is 1 reason why it's so slow.
Apparently according to the data at the bottom of this page (fine print) only the iPad pro supports USB 3.0. www.apple.com/shop/product/MJYT2AM/A/lightning-to-sd-card-camera-reader?afid=p231%7Ccamref%3A11l3p&cid=AOS-US-AFF-PHG Classic.
Usb2 should be able to transfer this file with 60MB/s, so in less than 3 seconds. But iphone transfers it with 1MB/s which is just sad. I like the usb-c port on android which can do 600MB/s. Just get a 2.5" drive with usb-c and you can do this with just one cable, no powered usb hubs required.
That’s because lightning connection is still usb 2 speeds which is ridiculous, only the iPad pros have usb 3 transfer speeds with the 3rd gen having usb c port. Apple has got to add usb c to the next gen 5G iPhones at least the pro models. That’s what’s really missing from the iPhone 11s.
You're definitely right. The super slllloooowwww Lightning connector is an embarassment. Apple thinks all can be done via WiFi because we all live in Cupertino and have a 1Gb router in range.
Jazz jazz jazz. You’re so cute. Get to the point. So... I took your hint about FILES and it works. Plugged in the lightening cord Sd card reader and sure enough the files are found as you report IN the FILES container. Thank you. Talk less and go far. Good luck.
Hi, could you share with me the HUB you use to connect the external HDD and Apple device? The link you shared is not found in Amazon now

Hello, I’ve come across this problem, and found your video online , it’s now 3yrs old, is the process any faster now ?
Thanks for uploading, 👍🏼😊
The new iPhone 15 has USB-C. Should be much better.
Since this is 4yrs old, and I’m only just looking for a solution to this, is there an updated version of this video 🤞😁
The approach is the same.
Thank you for this. I was looking for a video on how this worked for iPhone specifically.

I was having trouble getting the blank space click to work. I'm sure it's a Beta issue.
Hi ur videos r very informative. Can we same with samsung phones from gopro recordings to ssd or hdd. TIA
Yes I've seen people with Samsung phones do this.
@@ALinsdau thanks

Yes, it should work. You could probably also use your iphone since it now supports the file system.
What hub are you using? The link seems broken!
Hey sir, can i directly acces to the hard drive with lighting to usb cable? Without the card reader?
You need the powered hub.
This was extremely helpful and accurate!!! Great job! I just tried this and it works absolutely amazing!!!!

It’s hard to deal w overloading a phone. Offload when possible.
Does the usb hub itself need power or can the apple usb to lightning adapter with power also power an HDD?
This particular hub needs power to power the hard drive.

Can I copy my google photos to an external hard drive most of my photos are on google photos app
You should be able to with the new iOS.
Just curious, will this keep Live Photos as well as save the photos by date order?
This method copies from the SD card, so whatever is on there will be cloned over.

I've had no problems with that method so far.
@@ALinsdau thanks a lot. That makes me comfortable leaving for my 3 month long camping trip! Cheers mate
Could it be because the card reader and/or the hub is running at USB 2.0 speed so that the transfer was slow?
It's actually the Apple Lightning connector. It's STILL USB 2.0. It's mindblowing for $1000 phones.

Why not just use a Western Digital Passport HD with built in SD card reader you wont even have to take the phone!!
