I'm currently using Yousicain to learn the piano/keyboard but your video really made it clear why it's better to learn scales as oppose to individual songs, thank you for sharing
Scales ar'nt hard in your head it's just knowing what fingers to use. I was and still am good with the sharps it's the flat keys. Then there is coordination with the right and left hand. Piano majors need to play scales four octaves. If you major another non keyboard instrument then two octaves are required. Scale passages in pieces are always present somewhere in a piece. Scales also help with arpeggi. An arpeggio are chords taken from scales. Master both and you will have better techique.
Drilled a bunch of scale practice for hours today and it literally made me like 60 percent better as a beginner keyboard player. If I had known this I would have drilled sooner.

Can you explain how knowing the circle of fifths helps with memorising scales? Is it more the case when just looking at the keyboard? I just don’t see how it would help when playing in real-time, I’m yet to learn my scales though. Right now I’m practicing chords and moving through the circle of fifths but haven’t committed scales to muscle memory yet
I've been playing guitar for a long time and never have I come across legitimately good reasons to practice scales. I've been told, "That is what you do" or "Shut up and do it". Understanding the why is so important because it is about developing muscle memory and learning. It helps take the sting out of the boredom because practicing scales gets old quickly.
Scales are important for guitar, but because they mostly use the same patterns and are just shifted up or down the neck, it's not quite the same as piano. Once you learn a 2-octave G major scale starting on the 3rd fret, there is nothing new to learn playing the A major scale starting on the 5th fret (and practicing the scale in each key quickly gets boring). With piano, that's not truth...a whole different fingering is required to learn the A major after learning the G major. Guitar has a whole different set of challenges of course, particularly when it comes to reading printed music.

Zach thanks for this great resource it very helpful, can I ask a question about the major scales fingering sheet. The notes for C# Major(Db) are they correct, I think E# should be E and B# should be C. maybe I reading it wrong. Seamus
Seamus McQuaid yes logically it would be easier to think of E# as F and B# as C. But here’s why it doesn’t work. In a scale each letter is only used once and you must use all letters. So you can’t have C# D# F and F# G# A# C and C#. It has to read as C# D# E# F# G# A# B# and C#. Additionally the key of C# major has 7 sharps!! A real nightmare for pianists!! Hope that helps.
