Fun fact: Despite often being associated with _the_ devil, in the most literal sense Faustian bargains are actually a fixture of an entirely different demon: Mephistopheles. He's the one that bargained with Faust.
My favorite devil depiction is the false shepherd from the mandela catalogue. It speaks in an approximation of a human voice- like a vocaloid or a parrot. Like it cant produce its own noise, only highjack the voice of a machine.
My Blood Meridian hot take is that Holden is something weirder than The Devil. He's much more willing to get his hands personally dirty than any depiction of the Devil I've seen, and it never feels like he's here to tempt people, just to revel in the sinfulness that's already here So he's a psychic manifestation of the worst parts of The Old West and all the murder and brutality that came with it, or more broadly: The God Of Gunslingers
He isn't the devil, he is an archon of god or god himself , atleast to more gnostic readings of the text. Which do hold merit due to the many refrences to gnosticism in the book.
You ever wonder what the real judge Holden would think of everyone saying he's rhe devil and an incarnation of war. Like he's just sitting in the afterlife, and he says to mccarthy "What the fuck man? I was just a guy"
@@a.i5233Judge Holden was never a real person, he was just a character made for the novel, in order to guide the gang in the story along the path of damnation in a way that felt more supernatural, and not just humans being cruel and making mistakes, leading to their ultimate demise. The gang is based on a real gang however, the Glanton Gang actually existed, according to the memoirs of Samuel Chamberlain. So the other members of the gang might be sitting in heaven/hell and asking him about their fucked up legacy, but Holden isn’t there, because he is entirely fictional. If anything, he’s inspired by Satan, or worshippers of Satan. Keep in mind that Satan is not The Devil, that would be Lucifer. Satan is a powerful Demon of hell, embodying the sin of Wrath, that is said to be needlessly cruel, violent, and ruthless, for no purpose other than his own amusement. He thrives in times of war and violence, when humans are more easily misguided to violence and brutality. In summary, Satan is the Prince of Wrath, and is brutal, violent, and cruel to practically everyone he ever meets. Lucifer is the calm and collected bargainer, the insidious voice leading you every time you do something immoral, he is the Prince of Pride, and the first to fall. Both are immensely powerful fallen Angels, and aligned with Hell, they just have different methods of leading humanity to damnation. Holden is much more akin to Satan than Lucifer.
If you do a third video on this subject, may I suggest that you talk about Over The Garden Wall and it's depiction of the devil, The Beast he's one of my favorite devil depictions
I like to think that the Beast is also a depiction of depression. Since the entire thing is set in a dying dream, him convincing the kids to give up is convincing them to choose to die- thus why his victims get turned into trees. In Dante's inferno, the punishment for suicide was being turned into a tree/shrubbery and pecked endlessly by birds iirc.
I feel like the Beast isn't _really_ the devil, he's just a confident charlatan who convinces people he's a greater threat than he is by intimidating them.
Crossroads (1986) is one of me and my dad's movies we quoted all the time. When we watched it, when I was like 8, for the first time, I said, how can that be the devil if he has no horns and isn't red? "The devil could be anything to any person. Sometimes the devil is a bottle of pills, liquor; maybe he's in the mirror for some people." RIP Pops.
Not a movie or series really, but the devil in “the devil went down to Georgia” is one of my top 5 just because he seems rational at least to the point of making a deal instead of just taking a soul and KEEPING that deal in the end. Also the depiction of a beast-like disgusting creature playing such a beautiful and powerful instrument has impacted a lot of medias. Also, the sound of the violin when it does get to the devils part is so fitting.
Also the fact Johnny made a deal with the devil means his soul is going to hell anyway, so the devil just loses a random golden fidle for a soul he needed
@@MrShinjiTabris technically he made a bet not a deal which is odd but it does go "I'll bet a fiddle o' gold against your soul, I think I'm better than you" and Johnny responds "I'm gon' take your bet and you're gonna regret I'm the best there's ever been"
I trapped the devil reminds me a lot of the Twilight Zone episode “The Howling Man”. It's essentially the same plot but it takes place in a cathedral I think. It’s one of my favorite depictions of the devil I’ve ever seen
Don't know if it's of much interest but i'd like to share one of my favorite interpretations of the devil in a videogame: Faith: The Unholy Trinity is a game made by Airdorf about a priest fighting a cult in ordee to save a girl he failed to exorcise, throught the game you get to see just how much the cult has taken control ovee the town and how wretched and evil the demons they summon are. And as the game goes on you can see the protagonist lose faith both in the benevolance of his religion and in himself. The Devil appearance takes place during a flashback of the time the priest failed to exorcise the girl, he was terrified and started praying for someone, anyone to get him out of there. Before him appears a being of pure light, who adresses him as "son of man" and asks him "what does thou want" When the priest begs him to give him an escape, it mentions that the girl will be let behind, but in his desperation the priest ignores that and asks to be let out. The being agrees to let him out IF he SWEARS to devote his life to it, it literally says "SWEAR IT", which would seem uncharacteristical for a supposedly benevolent god to do. Many people believe this being of light wasn't god, but the devil himself tricking the protagonist into devoting himself to evil in a moment of weakness. And i just think that's insanely cool. If you're interested this interpretation is further discussed in Wendigoon's video about the game. Which is a pretty good video about a pretty good game if you ask me :]
DAMN IT! I forgot about that one! I've seen Wendigoon's & a couple other videos about the game if I had remembered it I would have 100% included it, great shout!
I like to think of Candy from Django Unchained as a Devil figure. Its never suggested he may be the devil, but his design with the goat beard, the red suit and his cigarette holder thing are all very stereotypical pop culture devil design features. Not to mention that he rules over a hellish place and is, at least on the metaphorical plane, the dragon that holds Brunhilde captive (from the tale of the german Doctor). He enjoys and/or doesnt care about the suffering of the slaves on his land, because, in his twisted mind, they deserve it. I'd argue, his character is definitely meant to represent the devil.
Tbh i think my favorite depection of the devil is from the cuphead show. Growing up in a christian household made me fear the devil so much, but cupheads devil is just some guy.
The blackcoats daughter is one of the best movies I've ever seen honestly. It's one of my top ten for sure and it gives me the dread and creeps that I love. It's truly miserable and lonely and scary and it's so good.
The Toast scene from the Devil has stuck with me for years. It’s so “silly” but when you grow up hearing all about these little things you can do it hits extra hard.
Kinda a weird choice, but DIO from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders is a cool take on the devil. One of the earliest descriptions for DIO in this part is about fear. When people feeling fear in his presence, they don't feel panic or freeze. They feel joy.
Loving these videos, especially as someone who also enjoys depictions of the Devil in media (vaguely gestures to my profile picture, lmao). If you’re looking for more, I highly recommend the game We Know The Devil, a visual novel about three teenage girls at a summer camp; one night-the one the game takes place during-they have to fight a literal, actual Devil. There’s multiple endings and all of them contain some really fun stuff. It’s really good and is one of my favorite games! Another game that has really fun depictions of the Devil and his demons is FAITH: The Unholy Trinity. It’s about a priest who, a year after failing to successfully exorcise a demon from a girl, goes back to the place of the exorcism to finish what he started. As the story goes on, he falls down an ever-deepening rabbit hole of demonic influence and mystery. The game is in the style of an old ATARI or NES game. Wonderful videos, please keep up the amazing work!!
thank you for mentioning VM Varga. i feel like he's such a great character and so vile that it loops around from being hilarious to just being nasty again. david thewlis knocked it out the fucking park
my favourite depiction of the devil is in FAITH: THE UNHOLY TRINITY when he visits you mascarading as god and its only on a second playthrough that you realise his behaviour is not like that of god at all
The Devil in Faith: The Unholy Trinity is so good and so terrifying. He's the only character in the game who isn't voiced, and that's just very unsettling.
You get a sub just for the fact you literally gave love to crossroads and tales from the hood. Angel heart, The Devil and the Blacksmith, and the witches of East wick had good portrayals as well and of course the devil in the prophecy is a good one too.
One of my personal favourite depictions of the devil (or maybe death it's debated in the community) is gaunter o'Dimm from the witcher 3 game, he's both delightful and terrifying and ultimately you never really know who he was or what he was.
I mentioned this in your last video but Critical Roles Asmodeus (the devil in dnd) as played by Brennan Lee Mulligan. He is hauntingly terrifying and horrible in the sense of Dread he brings and apart of a plot twist like watching a train wreck. He is the definition of evil there is no goodness or kindness or humanness only in his evil. Seriously just look up his monologue it is spine tingling.
You should watch "Over the Garden Wall". It is a great mini series with an antagonist referred only to as "The Beast." Who has such a memorable voice and presence.
I'm not sure if it counts because in one appearance it's possessing a doll and in the other it has possesed someone, but i really like the portrayal of Lucifer in Penny Dreadful.
Judge Holden in Blood Meridian is hands down my favorite depiction of the devil. He’s cunning, omnipresent, and embodies pure evil without a shred of humanity or redemption a walking nightmare in the American West. There’s something classic and unsettling in the way he plays the fiddle, dances, and dominates any space he’s in. McCarthy’s take feels like a deeply traditional view of the devil, but reimagined through the brutal lens of a Western. Holden isn’t just a villain; he’s more like a force of nature, and you can’t look away. Absolute masterpiece of a character.
One of my absolute favorite depictions of the devil comes from a kinda unknown cw show called reaper. He's played by Ray wiseand he is a prideful joking trickster at times but also an absolutely intimidating unmoving force. He's evil incarnate hidden behind a handsome smile
I personally really like the version of the Devil from the Doctor who 2-parter episode "The Impossible Planet" and "The Satan Pit", its voice and way of getting into people heads was really scary when i first saw it as a kid and even today still gives me some chills.
Gaunter O'DImm is one of my favourite depictions of a faustian pact demon in the Witcher, incredibly creepy depiction of the Devil. while this is focused on depictions in film you should see some deconstructions of the character from the Hearts of Stone dlc for Witcher 3
The deptiction of gell and the devil in amazon's "Preacher" is twisted, comical, and horrifying. It's well worth a watch for those who like to see these interesting interpretations. Especially as a character features whom the devil fears.
Not sure if it counts but the Death Angels from the quiet place give a very “angels of retribution” feel that I find is pretty common when it comes to depictions of the devil
devilman crybaby is pretty insane depictions of the devil and god. i cried watching that for the first time oh my fucking god what a gut wrenching emotional series
I Trapped the Devil seems like it took a lot of inspiration from the Twilight Zone's "The Howling Man," which is a really cool 20 minute episode about how some monks living out in the woods have a 'man' trapped in their cellars. You should take a look at it if you happen to see this!
Nobody mentioned Tom Waits is Mr. Nick in The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. He's suave, persuasive, all in all fun. He's just a devil who wants a good game. And it's Tom Waits.
two whole videos about the best devils in fiction and not one mention of the Robot Devil in Futurama, he's always been a favorite character overall of mine
I’m ngl I don’t remember much of The Blackcoat’s Daughter but besides the creepy song, I do remember that it is the only horror movie that has made me hurt and cry. I cried over that exorcism scene. Despite my confusion at the time over my reaction, I was absolutely loving how fresh that scene was. I’m gonna have to rewatch it again soon.
Aw hell yeah, I saw a comment on the last video mentioning O Brother Where Art Thou and I’m so glad you ended up talking about it :D One of the more interesting aspects of that movie is that the devil is ultimately defeated by a flood from the demolition of a dam that’s been advertised throughout the movie. Just think it’s an interesting parallel to the story of Noah.
Sadly the games are pretty long, but how Louis Cypher evolved over installments in SMT from SMT 2 to SMT 5 is like a young lively rebel growing to a broken messiah
Another great video, I'm really glad that I stumbled upon your channel a while back. I'd really enjoy if you did a video about great depictions of Death or Hell. The depiction of Hell in The House that Jack built is something that I think a lot.
Just letting you know you’re making some awesome stuff - definitely my favorite RUclips channel I’ve found in the past few months. I hope your old sports fans aren’t too mad at you for the pivot. 😅
The Devil from The Master and Margarita, anyone? I like how he comes off tired, weathered, and personable, like a mysterious old man full of wondrous tales and magic tricks. Then the next thing you know, he has pulled what is a funny little trick to him and a traumatic life-shattering experience to his victims. He seems personally invested in some humans’ lives and benevolent toward them, yet cruel for both small and big reasons to others. You’re left feeling like under the right circumstances, you could be friends with him, but the truth is that he is only concerned with humans when he is forced to interact with them, at which point he simply plays around with them and moves on. The fact that you’re left feeling at least somewhat favorably towards the Devil by the end of the book is what makes him such a good and dangerous devil. He may be tricking the other characters in a rather simple way (give them what they want and then watch them suffer as it all comes crashing down), but he plays his most cunning trick on the reader. He makes you feel like you and him have a lot in common, like you agree on a lot of things and can have a mutual understanding and respect. These other guys are obviously morally corrupt fools, you’re not like them, so of course he would be nice to you… and maybe… you could get that thing you really want from him? Maybe he’d make an exception for you like he did for Master and Margarita? And that’s how you know you will get tricked just like everyone else.
15:46 I was waiting for the tales from the hood reference. While the last one is kinda doodoo caca, the first two are some of my fav movies of all time
15:06 IM SO GLAD YOU BROUGHT THIS UP YOU DONT JNWO HOW MANY TIMES IVE BROUGHT UP A MOVIE WHERE THE GAURD USES TOAST TO EXPLAIN THE DEVIL BECAUSE I COULDNT REMEMBER THE NAME AND EVERYONE JUST LOOKED AT ME LIKE IM INSANE 😂😂😂
My favorie depiction of the devil is actually from a creepypasta story called "A favor for a a favor" by Vincent V.Cava He's actually so chaotic and funny but also cunningly manipulative, a bit like Lucifer from well... "Lucifer" witch is another of my favorite interpretations except in that series he's more of a "good guy"
So the ending of Tales From The Hood does hinge on what Clarence Williams is doing, but you can't really say that's the only thing that makes it fun. The reactions of the three youngsters really sell the moment in a big way. "What we gonna do now, Bulldog???!!?"
I’m so sad and happy because I really want to watch this video but nearly every thing in the spoiler section is on my watch list 😂 I’m going to be right back after watching everything lol
I would love to see a video of these about different depictions of Death/the Grim Reaper(Verna also counts for that i believe), or of the trickster myth as you mentioned in the god video
As someone who's been researching and studying demonology for the better part of half a decade, something really doesn't sit right with me about people suggesting Hereditary as a depiction of _the_ devil.
Definitely check out Gaunter from Witcher 3, one of my personal favourite takes on the devil! Great videos, are there any other villain archetypes you enjoy? Any that you'd do a video similar to these?
I know ppl say the judge ultimately comes back for the kid because he bested him but personally I think that the judge only wants to leave bodies behind rather than witnesses because if you walk out of his life and continue to live yours, you do so as a new unknown entity with an unknown history and thus, without his consent. to your ultimate peril.
My favorite depiction of the devil comes from a little-known NoSleep story (yes, really) called I Met Someone Who Claimed to be the Devil, and I Think I Believe Them. It tells the story of a man who finds himself in a pub. A seemingly nice, young woman starts a conversation with him. A woman who has visibly had a very rough night. She’s looking disheveled, makeup ruined, had drinks poured out on her, poor girl’s been through a lot. She starts telling him a story, starting out as a hypothetical take on a Biblical tale but then morphs into a critique on society that leaves the man utterly disturbed. Somewhere in the story, she lets slip that it’s all a lot more autobiographical than he thought and, when she gets to the part that made those who came before him treat her the way she had been treated all night, his life would be changed forever. It’s utterly haunting as it puts a spin on the devil that we don’t get to see very often. Not an agent of chaos and evil, but a witness to it, which she would argue is worse.
One depiction that doesn't get mentioned as much as it should is Mr. Nick in The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. Played by the always entertaining Tom Waits, he's such a sleazy asshole, he doesn't feel strictly "evil," just someone who likes to play dirty games and dirty tricks. But even he has a limit when he talks about his distaste for Tony played by Heath Ledger in his final role.
Some other great ones are Disney’s Chernabog from Fantasia and Coachman from Pinocchio. I have seen readings of Lalo Salamanca from Better Call Saul as a Devil-like figure but that might not be explicit/substantial enough.
I’d personally argue that that between the two Fargo villains, Malvo is closer to being the devil (his garden of Eden comment, the wings of blood shot, the heavy use of temptation to manipulate people, him being incredibly difficult to kill, etc), whereas Varga embodies greed in a very human way with how materialistic he is, and the way that (he atleast claims) he accumulates his wealth to protect his longevity, which I doubt a devilish character would be too concerned with. Varga is also a bit more human in that he has noticeable flaws (particularly his teeth and the eating disorder) as opposed to Malvo who rarely even makes mistakes. Either way, two incredible villains
In the cake club. Straight up panning it. And by itt.. haha. Let’s just say my depiction of the devil

Great video again but it's criminal how little you talked about hereditary.
Red Guy from the cartoons I'am Weasel & Cow & Chicken is a hoot when it comes to the Devil
Also Him from the powerpuff girls 😂
Lycufer from spn is the best
The deptiction of gell and the devil in amazon's "Preacher" is twisted, comical, and horrifying. It's well worth a watch for those who like to see these interesting interpretations. Especially as a character features whom the devil fears.
Not sure if it counts but the Death Angels from the quiet place give a very “angels of retribution” feel that I find is pretty common when it comes to depictions of the devil
I personally like “freind” or “the man with the scarlet eye” from swan song. The way he can be felt even when he’s not in the scene is amazing
The devil from tales from the hood is one of my favorite depictions of
devilman crybaby is pretty insane depictions of the devil and god. i cried watching that for the first time oh my fucking god what a gut wrenching emotional series
Blood meridian is one of my favorites as well it’s one that keeps me up
Loving these video essays! The pacing and passion behind them has inspired me to attempt a video essay of my own! ❤
Somehow I'm glad you didn't include a specific cringey depiction of him.
Aw hell yeah, I saw a comment on the last video mentioning O Brother Where Art Thou and I’m so glad you ended up talking about it :D
One of the more interesting aspects of that movie is that the devil is ultimately defeated by a flood from the demolition of a dam that’s been advertised throughout the movie. Just think it’s an interesting parallel to the story of Noah.
Sadly the games are pretty long, but how Louis Cypher evolved over installments in SMT from SMT 2 to SMT 5 is like a young lively rebel growing to a broken messiah
Officially subbed… loving this content!
O brother where art thou is so good I’m glad you mentioned it
awesome vid! great series covered, just finished Fargo S3 totally recommend
I recently watched The Blackcoats Daughter and The Eyes of my Mother as a double bill.
It was quite a night!!!
I don't remember if the devil physically appears in it but The Ninth Gate is about finding books written by Satan and it's got immaculate atmosphere
It's the female character always trailing Depp's character...at the end it's pretty clear.
@@jaysonpida5379 It's been a hot minute so I guess it's time for a rewatch
bro i just watched longlegs. perfect timing
15:46 I was waiting for the tales from the hood reference. While the last one is kinda doodoo caca, the first two are some of my fav movies of all time
So happy you used blood meridian dude! I was waiting for it in the last video
Now I’ve got to read Blood Meridian again
You had me at the Wagner theme music- I subscribed when you mentioned "Fantasia".
15:06 IM SO GLAD YOU BROUGHT THIS UP YOU DONT JNWO HOW MANY TIMES IVE BROUGHT UP A MOVIE WHERE THE GAURD USES TOAST TO EXPLAIN THE DEVIL BECAUSE I COULDNT REMEMBER THE NAME AND EVERYONE JUST LOOKED AT ME LIKE IM INSANE 😂😂😂
the sequel i didnt know i needed
I would like to recommend Hannibal Lecter from the NBC series Hannibal.
My favorie depiction of the devil is actually from a creepypasta story called "A favor for a a favor" by Vincent V.Cava
He's actually so chaotic and funny but also cunningly manipulative, a bit like Lucifer from well... "Lucifer" witch is another of my favorite interpretations except in that series he's more of a "good guy"
I love obrother where art tho like it’s so great love the representation
The cartoon devil in the intro is awesome 😅
So the ending of Tales From The Hood does hinge on what Clarence Williams is doing, but you can't really say that's the only thing that makes it fun. The reactions of the three youngsters really sell the moment in a big way. "What we gonna do now, Bulldog???!!?"
13:20 This film feels clearly inspired by the Twilight Zone episode “The Howling Man” and can even be seen as a continuation of that story.
Devilman Crybaby has my favorite depiction of evil/devil in media. Watch it if you haven't!
Please make a video about your favorite depictions of world mythology and/or cryptids !
My favorite devil is so nerdy you can’t get into it without watching over 100 hours of people playing a ttrpg
I find Bill Cipher to be an interesting take on a Satan-type character.
I would die for Pancake
I’m so sad and happy because I really want to watch this video but nearly every thing in the spoiler section is on my watch list 😂 I’m going to be right back after watching everything lol
I would love to see a video of these about different depictions of Death/the Grim Reaper(Verna also counts for that i believe), or of the trickster myth as you mentioned in the god video
As someone who's been researching and studying demonology for the better part of half a decade, something really doesn't sit right with me about people suggesting Hereditary as a depiction of _the_ devil.
I don't know how the algorithm showed me this and NOT THE VIDEO ON MY GOAT COUNT ORLOK so this means i gotta lock in and turn that notif bell on
Definitely check out Gaunter from Witcher 3, one of my personal favourite takes on the devil!
Great videos, are there any other villain archetypes you enjoy? Any that you'd do a video similar to these?
This is very cool what you do. Next level would be to synthesize and compare the depictions, interconnect these. Keep it up.
omg i just watched the first one like 2 days ago, and Im home sick missing classes. Stars aligning.
Hey, I really dig your stuff so far! The vampire vid too. Excited to hear your thoughts and interests on other stuff too
My favorite depiction of the devil comes from a little-known NoSleep story (yes, really) called I Met Someone Who Claimed to be the Devil, and I Think I Believe Them.
But even he has a limit when he talks about his distaste for Tony played by Heath Ledger in his final role.
that was such a weird movie
Some other great ones are Disney’s Chernabog from Fantasia and Coachman from Pinocchio. I have seen readings of Lalo Salamanca from Better Call Saul as a Devil-like figure but that might not be explicit/substantial enough.
Unexpected judge holden?
Fuck yeah
See if you can find the TV show Reaper somewhere. Ray Wise as the Devil throughout the two seasons is my favorite Satan.
18:15 im famous! you covered the judge very well
