I generally don’t comment on RUclips videos, but I just needed to say that this was the best video I’ve seen in quite some time. While I think the content is great, it has more to do with your style than the content. Your conversational style is mesmerizing and it feels like we’re sitting around just shooting the breeze, and I really appreciate that! Have a great day and thank you for your service!
Thanks for the contribution! I've got to try and start the Mustang! It's been sitting for a while! But I will work on that video in the next few weeks. Thanks for your support!
Great video. Yes, the added unsprung weight with the new wheels is of concern. YT finally gave me a great channel recommendation. First visit, and I’ll be back. BMW GS rider - USN retired.
Ok got it! 1) 21" Wheels...adds weight 2) Heel Shifter...more lean room 3) Saddle Speaker...leak if not quality 4) After Market Suspension...if you upgrade stock rims Luv the channel Bro keep it up & burn rubber not your soul!!!!
I was in the Navy for 6 years. Had enough....got out....then I learned that the Navy wasn't so bad after all! I am glad that I served and wish I had been more mature and stayed in.
I'm 71 and been riding Harley's since I was 21. I like simple and functional, why I ride a hot rod FXD, no radio or fairing just 120hp. BUT I enjoy your videos anyway. And that is a nice 65 Mustang too.
I have only been riding for 4 years.....but I'm glad I started riding later in life. I was WAY too irresponsible to handle a motorcycle when I was younger. My dad was a mechanic and auto body mechanic. I learned how to fix things and work with my hands. I've been working on cars as along as I can remember..... not a mechanic like my dad, but I can take care of them. Motorcycles where a natural progression for me. I love riding!
@@RidingandWrenching I hurt myself a few times in my 20's riding crazy, wheelied over backwards on my 73 SuperGlide, went off road while drinking into a ditch, so I know what you mean. But had so many other great adventures and friends because of riding I'm glad I started early.
@@RidingandWrenching Sorry, almost said '66. You were in the Navy? My Pop was an AirForce fighter pilot and did a 1 year stint exchange duty with the Navy in '57 on the Bon Homme Richard, flew Fury's the Navy F-86. He liked his time there, said the food was great.
I have always said I don't want a soud system on a motorcycle. Even when I had an Ultra for my previous bike, I never used it. My favorite "radio" stations have been Twincam 88, Indian 111, Evo 80, and I am currently listening to Twincam 103 on my current ride.
Had a 21”, would never do that again. Felt like the front end was on a razor’s edge. Just cannot stand the look of ape hangers, just went with a lower seat. Being a former motor officer, no way can I ride without the heel shifter. No need for saddlebag speakers, I have tour-pack speakers. Suspension I agree with. Curious, who did your seat? Great video by the way.
The seat is a Harley Hammock that has been reupholstered. It was done by a guy in Memphis. If you are in the Memphis area, let me know and I will get his info to you....but any upholsterer (who does automotive) could probably do it. Why do motor officers prefer heel shifters? I think I know what you mean when you say the 21" feels like a razor edge. The ride improved a bit with the new suspension...so that may have made a difference. Prior to the new suspension....the 21" did feel strange....I attributed the feeling to the fact that I had 2 new tires at the same time...but maybe it's something that's common with 21" wheels.
Having stumbled on this video. While it started I said to my wife this guy knows what he's talking about look what's in his garage. She looks and asks what? Me- Look again Wife- Oh that looks like a 66 Me laughing- Did you just grab a yr out of the air how would you know? Story is my father in-law is a second owner of a 65 HIPO and would take her to car shows when she was a kid so she knows a lil bit about Mustangs lol. I searched your videos to see if you had one that might mention your classic. We watched the Mach blah E video. And she celebrated when you showed and said the yr of yours (beautiful btw). So I obviously had to subscribe to your channel. Looking forward to watching past and future videos.
I'm planning to do a video on the 66. It's been a popular request. Unfortunately I live in TN...summers are brutal so going to car shows is not an option. California was great for car shows....I went to atleast 1 show per week.
I have to say that bike is my dream bike, I love that red color, what looks like only black Chrome and no silver chrome, extended handlebars, that bike is just gorgeous, my goal is to upgrade to a bagger like this in a couple of years, if I came home with this exact bike I would not be disappointed, I literally just got a stitched new seat for my bike, a Dyna Street Bob, I never thought of water getting in there though, I might have to pay attention to that and possibly get a cover for it, thanks for pointing that out
I never change from stock size tires because while on the road it's easy to replace them in the event of damage. I never do saddle bag speakers because they do leak over time and I don't ride my Harley to listen to the dam radio or music.
Great, my 2014 Citadel has load leveling shocks, however, on my adventure bike I have to set the preload on the rear spring when is loaded with luggage and camping gear. .
Nice work. Good to see an honest review of the things you would have done differently. The learning process and buying the wrong things for your bike can be expensive lessons.
Well, I wished you had email me before I bought new my wheels. I Purchased 21-inch motto for front and 17-inch for rear. Tires will arrive today, so I haven't completed install. One thing I love is tps system. I enjoy knowing tire pressure at a glance, especially on those long road trips to key west. PPl I spoke with assured me there was no ride quality issue. But now I know better. Once the tires arrive, I may put them on marketplace as a combo package or I may just say what the hell and install anyway. Had I seen this video before purchase, I would have just chromed 18-inch that came with bike. My bike has 18-inch on front and back. Stock. Now I have some pondering to do. Thx
I don't want to discourage you from using the bigger wheels. I still have them on my bike. You may not notice a difference in ride quality or it may not bother you. I'm glad that I upgraded my suspension. It has dramatically improved the ride quality. I still don't have TPMS on this bike. I'd like to add it but I'm not sure it will be as seemless as built in TPMS
My 2008 ultra classic does the same thing, took it to a shop, told them it also smells like burnt oil after I ride, they called me back and said some kind of gaskets were bad in the heads, replaced them, said the smell would go away after awhile, said to run seafoam in it . Well 7Months later it still smells !!!!The smell is coming from the engine area, no wet areas at all !!!!
Did the Wilbur, game changer ! Loving my heel shifter. Won't do speakers in the Lids, no leaks, but no sound. Stock bars and seat. 21" front wheel just looks great, gotta do it. 21 streetglide . Thank you gor the great video, I like the casual delivery.
When you were trying to think of what to say about the weight of the wheels, I think what you were looking for was 'unsprung weight'. It is the weight of the drivetrain that is under the suspension, not riding on it. Adding unsprung weight to your wheels isn't great because it now takes more effort to stop that wheel and more effort to start it as well. I think they look amazing and I doubt you notice it much. Just wanted to point that out. I love your bike! Nice video.
Thank you! I love the look of the wheels, but would have chosen lighter wheels if I had known prior to ordering. In terms of performance, I have not noticed a difference
Great video. I am just dreaming about a Road Glide Limited at this point, and a passenger, but at this point I am ok with the bars, wheels and suspension but exhaust and possibly the seat would get changed before I brought it home.
A bit late on this thread. Enjoying your presentation style. I had to laugh, your list of 4 is the same as mine. But I have not installed any of them,,,,,,, yet. Suspension is the only one under consideration on my 24 RG. Ride safe!
I ve always upgraded suspension after 30K miles....Never changed the Stock HD rider Seat until I started riding 2up again with my new Girl the passenger seat was uncomfortable for her...The HD TallBoy seat works great for her now....Also i never change out the Handlebars unless they get damaged from a crash or bent from a knock over....
@@RidingandWrenching I'm still in. I'm almost at the finish line. I'm on year 19 this year. Mostly west coast. I served on USS Ingraham FFG-61 , USS Dewey DDG-105, Pre-commissioned USS Ralph Johnson DDG-114. I've been TAD on various ships as a trainer and as an air controller.
When I got my ‘22 Road King, I was a bit upset that it didn’t have a heel shifter. My previous bike had one. But like you I found the extra room on the footboard was nice. I can slide both feet back with just my toes on the back of the boards. It’s nice to have that extra foot position when on a long ride.
Exactly!!! When I got my street glide, I was pissed that it didn't have a heel shifter. I actually bought it but never installed it. Then when I would get on my Road Glide I felt like my foot was in prison! I still have a new in box heel shifter for the street glide. I'll sell it eventually
I love my hall shifter. It keeps your boys from getting scuffed up. And on long rides. My feet are on highway pegs. That's just me. No two people will set their's up the same.
For me the exhaust, and seat are immediate. I actually love the factory bars. The suspension would be low on my list to be honest, but I could see why someone would maybe want to change them. I tried with and without the heel shifter, and after 12 years, the heel shifter stays. I don't trust others to cut my bags, however I can't cut up a pristine piece just because I want a little more sound.
If you like the room on the floorboard and like using a heel shifter, you should look into the Paul Yaffe Stealth Heel Shifter. i'll always have one on my bike from here on out.
Hello Gordy here i have a 2015 c v o road glide that i love the bike is stock except for a ledgens heavy duty front and rear suspension and a pair of Michelin tires the bike handles and rides like a dream it is night and day better than stock set up spend the money its worth it
In my humble opinion the best upgrade you did was to install the Wilber’s suspension it it a set and forget system. Did you replace the front springs from their kit or just do the rear suspension. As far as the stitching on the seat use saddle soap on seat it will help in sealing the stitching holes just use it regularly
The bike looks great! I bought a 05 Road King Custom FLHRSI with a 21" up front. Chrome spokes/rim, black tank, chrome headlight housing found on Road Kings! Sometimes if I hit a pothole, the f. fender will crash up to the lower triple -tree, no dents yet, but I feel a dented fender, coming due to the taller 21" wheel!
Awesome video. For me I have a 2021 fatboy. I need to change the wheels and the suspension, the wheels are extremely heavy. Upgrades that I like are the thick seat, extreme air breather, 131 stage IV, daymaker lights, the fat spark plug wires, iridium plugs, and a short sissy bar. The wheels though for sure have to go, they are solid and you can tell they weigh a ton.
On my previous ‘14 Ultra Limited I put a set of Yaffe apes. 12” I think. Difficult install with internal wiring, etc. Liked the look but the bars put my wrists at an odd angle that got uncomfortable on long rides. Plus I lost wind protection being over the batwing. Mistake. I’m now on my 2nd ‘14 Limited and running stock bars. Everybody complains about the air ride, but I find once you figure out the correct pressure it rides nice. You should use the least pressure you can based on weight I find. 29 psi solo works for me. Former Navy man here. Have that same blue flag in my garage. EM2, USS Nashville. 86-91. Go Navy!
Don't remember off the top of my head 4 mistakes, but I did make a mistake trying to clean my tank and scratched it up. Another mistake was when I got tires, I told them I needed tubes as well because I have spoke wheels, and they told me they would inspect my tubes to see if they needed to be replace, well that lasted 6 months then had to replace the tube!
I wish I'd not gotten the Cross Stitched seat as well. I got the heated one and couldn't imagine getting water in it. I have to put the cover on to wash the bike and never leave it in the rain with out the covers either. I have been using a great leather cleaner and conditioner and so far no thread fading. Thanks for sharing your list, honest and refreshing. Most people have purchase affirmation syndrome and are 100% sure that w/e it is they bought is the best thing ever and they have no regrets...lol. It's OK to maybe change your mind and see things different after owning it for while.
I have no shame in discussing mistakes! Sometimes I end up liking the "mistake" anyway or finding a way to deal with it.....like my seat. It is VERY comfortable (when it's dry!) I purchased the rain cover for washing the bike and when I get stuck riding in the rain. I have received some good suggestions for addressing the fading threads, so I'll try them at some point
Very good presentation and information. I do like how your mistakes were not that bad and "I like it". But, you're telling me you still have steel rims on that '66 Mustang. When I changed the wheels on my Mustangs ('65 & '66), it was like I installed power steering on them. I was amazed. As mentioned in other comments, your conversational style is great.
The 66 Mustang has 65 wheels. I won't count that as custom! I like them better than 66 wheels because they don't have the "beauty ring". Thanks for watching! I've got a video in the works for the Mustang...stay tuned!
Really like your videos. Great quality, very objective and friendly. My biggest mistakes on my former Street Glide CVO 2017 - 1) adding color LED lights, well it looked good, but I lived in Germany back then and it just got dark so late during summer that I never really used them... money I could have spend better no other mistakes Liked the Stage IV upgrade to 131ci. A completely different experience and sound. 🙂 And not to forget about the fun leaving some of the racers behind me... Bad Boy style windshield gave the bike a more aggressive look Not much more to add to the CVO, but was always thinking about the Wilbert`s aftermarket suspension you have installed. Will go for it for my Road Glide.
I enjoyed it in germany. The sound is great (much more agressive) and you have so much more power. Not sure if I would use it in the US, Speed Limits 🙂Beside that you will need to renew your tires more often...@@RidingandWrenching
Nice video. I actually did the opposite. I rode for 8 years without a heel shifter and got tired of my left shoe always being scuffed up and discolored from the shift peg. I bought an extended heel shift lever from Kuryakyn and I'm happy with it. The shift peg is small but effective and it extends past the end of the floorboard so it doesn't take up much space.
Funny thing happened to me in Daytona....dropped my bike on my foot! Actually wasn't that funny, but it hurt like hell. Fortunately no broken bones, but I had to borrow the heal shifter from a friends bike so that I could keep riding! My foot is better now, so the heel shifter is gone (again)
That was a great video! I just recently found your channel and I have subscribed!!! You are a very good presenter and clearly make your point. I have seen a couple videos of yours recently and will be looking for others. Much love from Canada. I have a 2018 Kawasaki Voyager 1700, someday I might be able to afford the real thing but for now my ride gets the job done. Keep the shiny side up my friend! Scott
Hey Cue, we all do things to our bikes that we say we shouldn't have, this is why the only thing I did on my 19 SGS other than upgrade lighting, rockford fosgate fairing replacemet speakers no flashing of radio nor an amp they sound awesome, was a stage 1, I always talk with people how they feel or like what they install on their rides and its about 50/50 so what I do is just make it my ride. Great video stay safe!
Cue, consider adding an extended rear brake pedal. Either Kuryakyn or the SoftBrake unit will be another game-changer for your very good slow-speed skills. Great video.
@@RidingandWrenching Made a world of difference for me being of age (😂) and limited ankle flexibility. Certainly will help with your new found love of slow-speed competition.
@@RidingandWrenching Yes sir, all of yhe HD’s I’ve ridden stock have sucked, until I got on the Pa Am. That has a decent suspension, but it’s not 800-900 lbs riding 2 up.

It has been a year so you may not see this recommendation. But anyway I recommend using Harley leather wax. It comes in two colors black and clear, use the black it will turn all the stiching on the seat black but it will keep the seat looking new and water proof the leather.
@@gnsmk357 thanks for the feedback. I still haven't tried putting anything on the stitching. It isn't wearing well. But my seat sure is comfortable! This bike now has over 99,000 miles. I'm not sure how much I'm willing to invest in it at this point. I'd rather keep the red accents since they match the bike so well.
Great video,I love my stock tires,I have a 03 Heritage Softail Classic 100 year Anniversary bike,it has the fatter tires and I love it,it has 30,000 miles and it still has the stock seat,I’m about to change that out, getting a little worn out, everything else I’m really happy with! Again, thanks for the video.Ride Safe my Brothers and Sisters!!
I replaced my seat somewhere around 30-40k miles. I have since recovered it...which is the seat that has the faded stitching now. I've received some good ideas from comments on this video, so I'm going to test some of them out to see if they can help with the fading
Great video Q.. nice and relaxed. I remember you from being at Robert simmons and I didn’t know you did videos, I just stumbled on this one…. Heel shifter… I never had one on any of my bikes so when I traded in my softail (had that one for 24 yrs) and bought my street glide S, it came w a heel shifter that I never used and took it off after a month or so of having it as a decoration.. lol .. I didn’t miss what I never had.. lol .. thx for your video. Greetings from Niagara Falls Canada
@@lennyevans4724 There isn't much to see! Memphis has a few nice tourist attractions: Graceland, Beale St, and the Lorraine Motel....but that's about it! There are no nice rides like eastern TN has.
Cue I just seen that soundz can out with new wiring to eliminate the kickstand warning and some other wiring for the tourpack and fog lamps. I seen it on Facebook. I hope this helps you.
Completely agree on the suspension. It was a must for me after traveling through Louisiana and their craptastic roads. I went to Wilbur’s and love it. No adjustments, all self leveling.
Craptastic😂😂😂you could have been talking about Memphis. Actually Detroit has the worst roads I have seen. Wilber's is incredible. I have Ohlins on my Street Glide. It's nice, but you have to adjust it if I have a passenger
@@RidingandWrenching I’m originally from Indiana and the Winters just tear them roads up. I looked at Ohlin’s but after watching the Million Dollar Bogan put thousands of off road miles on his Wilbur’s, I just figured I’ll never go through that kind of torture and therefore couldn’t go wrong. Plus less thinking for me on adjustment, and that’s always a good thing. 😆
My FLHTC came with a toe shifter, I couldn't get used to it on a big bike. And yes, after I added a heal shifter, I had no room for my big foot. So I replaced them with extended shift levers. All is right with the world.
I'm glad RUclips recommended your channel to me. You got some really great content, and I like the way you lay it out. You got a new subscriber. I bought my 2000 Road Glide with a portion of the enlistment bonus the Marine Corps provided me with. To this date I have not changed a thing on it. I'll probably keep it forever, but I'm going to get a new bike this year.
First. Thank you for your service! Those who are on active duty deserve the greatest respect from all Americans. Once you make the first upgrade....the bug will bite you! You'll change all sorts of things!
@@RidingandWrenching are the 14in handlebars on your Road Glide much more comfortable then the stock handlebars? Any add-on that you would recommend to relieve lower back strain? Thank you
Have you looked at the Thrashin Supply heal shifter with the cut down shift peg? I put one on my 21 RGS and it is a huge difference with room to use the entire floorboard.
I'm so accustomed to not having a heel shifter, I don't think I'll ever have one again. However, I had to borrow one from a friend after I hurt my toes and was unable to upshift😳
I love heel shifters. I've had a heel shifter on every Harley Touring bike since the early 80's. I even added one to my 2020 Fat Boy. My son tells me that I "grampafy" my bikes. And as far as suspension goes... I'm a firm believer in Legend's suspension... both front and rear. Improves the ride of my bike more than I ever expected. Sad that after spending so much on a bike that you have to add/change so much.
I don't know why Harley doesn't put a premium suspension in all of their bikes. I would want people to ride them so much that they never want to get off the bike. I couldn't wait to get off my Street Glide Special with a stock suspension. Thanks for sharing your story!
1. The 21" wheel - Where I live the roads are in bad shape and every hit put a dent on the wheel. It also make the ride rougher 2. Changing headers and air intake - It messes up the stock tuning and aftermarket tuning never gets it right; keep the stock headers but change the mufflers only 3. Saddlebag speakers - can't be heard at highway speed and always breakup; total waste of money 4. Aftermarket seat - The stock seat on a HD touring is super comfortable, no aftermarket matched the comfort
My seat is actually a Harley Hammock seat that I had reupholstered. It's super comfortable. The stock seat wasn't bad (on the Limited and Ultra models) but the Hammock is better. The seats on the Specials suck.
There is a protectant t that you can spray on your seat and it seals the sticking and holes. It's called shoe gear heavy duty waterproof protector stuff works on leather and works on motor cycle seats I have the same style of seats on both my Harleys I spray it on 3 times a season never get a wet ass and I wash my bikes once a week and been in the rain and still dry
You just earned another subscriber I’ve seen a couple of your videos in the past and your consistent clarity of communication makes your channel one of the better ones out there plus being a Navy guy myself how can I not follow you! As far as regrets, I have a 2017 road glide ultra and I did a stage 4 kit on it right out of the gate. I previously had a 2005 softail springer classic and I had always regretted not doing a big bore kit and cam in it so this time around I wanted to get it all done straight away. Unfortunately I would’ve been better served had I waited. These new M8 engines really respond to a cam upgrade and people who do exhaust, intake and cam chest upgrade especially in the early year model bikes perform very well. Their bikes make just about as much power as mine does and if they were able to replace the cam plate and oil pump, they avoided the oil sumping that I experienced, but was fortunate enough to have it happened before my warranty expired. My understanding is that they’re on several further revisions on the pump, so it still leaves a question in my mind about the dependability of my bike so eventually, I’ll end up upgrading both of those parts, and possibly even the cam again at that point, keep up the great work and go Navy!
Thanks for watching! I literally just upgraded the oil pump, cam, headers on my 2018. There is abt 20% increase in power that is very noticeable. I won't be blowing the doors off any muscle baggers, but my bike has plenty of power. I should have added this to the list.....this thing is LOUD! I need to do something to mellow out the exhaust a little bit. Thanks for your service! GO NAVY!!
To fix your stitching color use a red sharpie. Just touch it to the stitch and it wicks the color back into it. Depending on how much exposure your stitching gets to the sun, it may need done a couple times a year. Had to do it to my wife’s flames on her leather saddlebags every year on her old bike.
I don't know about other models, but for Sportsters, try to get every parts OEM - if you know what you are doing, and have mechanical tools and inclination, get a Baker's 6 speed transmission upgrade.
On my 1982 goldwing. I did what they call cheap dirty air. Main reason is you can't get factory air assist rear shocks anymore. I bought MA785 series air shocks for a corvette. My first mistake was using the supplied little air line. My second mistake was using the stock 30+ year old compressor. I would literally have to put the bike on the side stand. Hit the air up button and grab rhe bike and pull it over to the side stand to air up the one shock. Drop it and yank on it again to distribute the air. I later went to 1/4 quick connects and a Audi air compressor. That fixed that problem. Bike rode great on highways corners and such. But if you hit train tracks or pot holes. It would literally beat you. The dampers were too stiff for the bike. I liked it but didn't like it. It solved the issue of a wonky ass end bike. Two up it was awesome. Like riding on a cloud. Did it over with Chinese harley air ride shocks. Man what a difference. The dampers where perfect for the bike.
@Riding and Wrenching nope. Had to sell it to make ends meet in 2020 during covid. Learned my lessons from that bike and I bought an 1983 goldwing that I'm currently building. This bikes air ride will be a little more involved. Front and rear air silinoids for a air tank. Want to dump the bike at a stop light. Seat hight at ride height is 29" my inseam is 26" I dump the rear to bump stops it sits at 24". I'm using the same style of Chinese harley air ride shocks. Along with their tank. Modified to fit in my saddle bag. Plus a drain valve through the bottom of the bag and sealed. I'd post photos but you can't do that here. I really want a 2015 or newer road glide ultra. Right now it's just not in the cards for me. I have to get out from under bills that piled up during covid. Once that's done, and my 1983 Aspencade is done. I'll set out to purchase one. Then do the same rear air ride on it along with a lowered seat and a kick stand extention.
Great video with a lot of good points. Having owned the same FLHP for 22 years I have changed virtually everything on the bike at one time or the other. Upgraded engine to 111 cu inches, upgraded gearset to 6 speed overdrive were the biggest, most expensive upgrades and there are NO regrets with those. Regret #1 - lowered bike 1" - drug my floorboards too easily so I removed the lowering kit. Still drag them when turning aggressively occasionally. Regret #2 - Painted my white bike a whiter shade - I have since replaced the white tank with a black tank that was donated from a friend and now I'm not blinded by the sun reflecting off of my white tank. The original white tank developed a leak while on a 3400 mile ride. It's a police model so many other parts are black so the B/W theme looks good in my book. Regret #3 - I'm on the fence with this one - there are good and bad points. Installed a high performance clutch with an additional plate. Will never EVER slip but the clutch pull on the lever is reduced and a bit heavier than normal - gets rough in traffic. Regret #4 - At one time before the gearset was upgraded I replaced the front drive pulley to an oversized aluminum pulley. The aluminum pulley wears most faster than a steel one. I went back to steel and later on replaced the gearset. No issues with running a larger front drive pulley, just the type of metal it was made from. Having a stereo on any bike, IMO is a waste. Everyone is different, I get that. I'm a bit of an audiophile and if I want good sounding music I get high quality earbuds and use my phone. Personally I ride to get away from the all the noise and just listen to the 'twins' sing. I removed my heel shifter long ago and trimmed my extended brake pedal to allow me more room and positions for my feet on long trips.
That's amazing! I'm planning to keep my Road Glide until it dies....then I'll put another motor in it and keep riding it. My goal is 400,000 miles (I'm at 82,000 right now)
I also installed the Screaming Eagle clutch on my Road Glide. I'm going back to the stock clutch.....I may not wait for this one to wear out. It makes slow speed riding more challenging..
@@RidingandWrenchingThat is a good goal! I started out riding about 10k a year but as my 4 kids got older I chose to ride less and spend more time with them. Then the boys got old enough to ride dirt bikes so we did that instead of road trips. I don't regret any of that. Overtime, grandkids and life took up much of my riding time then I retired took a retirement ride and then found out that I had cancer. While I was recovering from treatment, cured by the grace of God, covid hits. So the odometer is around 130k. I recently bought a 1999 FLHRCI, removed the fuel injection and am having fun riding it around locally. Mainly so my oldest boy can ride with me and my youngest son, that already has a FLHR custom. My dream is to road trip with my boys. Almost there..... You are correct, the stock clutch is easier to pull in. This new (1999) bike will remain relatively stock. Previous owners already installed gear driven cams so it is set. My '98 is my hot rod touring bike. The 80 cu inch engine still ran good when it was replaced @100k. Instead of getting a new bike my goal was to upgrade the engine @100k. Goal met.
@@1AXMRDR that's awesome that you are riding with your kids. I only had the opportunity to ride with my dad once when I was a kid. He quit riding shortly after that (I think he got in a bad wreck). Before he died (last year) we had a lot of time to talk about motorcycles cars and all sorts of crap. I have one of his toolboxes in my garage now. It's a prized possession that I will never let go.
@@RidingandWrenching I'm sorry for your loss. Losing a parent is rough no matter how old you get. It's great that you did get to spend 'guy stuff' time with your dad. Since he had a toolbox I'm assuming you inherited your wrenching interest from him which is a great legacy to hand down. That's what good dads do. :-) My dad gave me the Harley bug when he put me in front of him on his Harley as we terrorized back roads, I was 5 or 6yro. We lost him when I was young, never got to ride with him as an adult. That's a sweet looking Mustang in the background. 80k on a 2018 is a real good start on 400k. Nice talking with you. I'm going to sub and see what else you're up to :-) I have some videos of some rides on my channel. Haven't loaded anything in quite a while. I need to get busy and remake some of them with some commentary about the rides. Ride smart.
Hey cue love the conversation. Like we’re friends. I took the heel shift off my 17 ultra because of my size 14 foot and I took it just a bit further. Went to ace hardware got a stainless spacer to bring the toe shifter out to the end of the spline shaft it needed some drill press work to get it right. But the best part was the room I gained for the front of my boot at the toe Feals like my dirt bike now. Complete comfort now 👍🏻
That sounds like a great idea. Any chance you can send a picture to me? Ridingandwrenching@gmail.com I think I know what you're talking about because mine sits further in (the tow shifter was on the outside). My Street Glide has a spacer
Kuiyakan or however you spell it. They sell this spacer for 120.00 bucks but i had to try it myself. 10 bucks for the spacer and 25 for a 5/8 drill bit I didn’t have but still cheaper than buying one. Had to cut the length also
Nice video sir I agree on the heel shifter I removed mine. I love my police seat. I love my 2into 1 pipe. I love my led lighting upgrades and custom dynamics horn. I don’t like my 12 inch bars I wish I had gone for 10.
I actually had the heel shifter, kicked my motorcycle into neutral on accident when I was doing the slow speed maneuvers three times that’s why I took it off
Just a thought. Make a spacer, pull your toe shifter off the shaft, put the spacer on and then the toe shifter on the outer spines. Much cleaner look and the placement (for me anyway) feels more correct.
I have size 13 shoe. Put extended heel shifter and rear brake pedal and some of the best things I ever did. Highway pegs for long rides. Also changed all the lights to LED for safety.
Q, I had the lithium battery and loved it and it's weight until I had an issue on a road trip and found out no one had a lithium battery charger to use. Also you need to post a warning label to alert that the bike has a lithium battery in case it needs charging in your absence like at a H D dealer.
That's a great point! I may remove the battery tender cable to ensure a dealer is never tempted to plug it in. I am still trying to figure out what I would do if I accidentally drained the battery on the road. How do you jump start a lithium?
You talked about the Saddle Bag speakers and how you are happy that they don’t leak as you had been told. However, you also mentioned that you were told that you could not hear saddle bag speakers at highway speeds. Are you happy with the performance of those speakers? Can you hear them at highway speeds? And did they improve the overall sound of your system? Also, is your base radio still stock or is it an upgraded base system? Thank you for the great video. Lots of good information and helpful informed opinions shared here.
I actually forgot to talk about the speaker at highway speeds! Most of the sound you hear is from the speakers in front of you. However, the saddlebag speakers and the tourpack speakers give a "surround sound" feel when on the road. I am very happy with them. There is a noticeable difference in sound between my RG with 6 speakers compared to my SG which only has 2. My RG has the Soundstream Reserve head unit. Check out my video on the upgrade
Personally I like having a heel shifter. I have another bike besides my Street Glide that has one. To each their own. As far as your seat, holes are unacceptable. I’d get another one if it was me. Lots of quality aftermarket seats out there. Thanks for sharing….
I really like the Hammock seat. I've received a lot of good feedback about addressing the stitching holes. I currently have a rain cover for the seat that I use...it's worked well so far. Thanks for watching!
If those are KST custom Mayham handlebars. I would make sure you pay attention to where the handlebars were welded together at the points because I have seen four different sets where the weld broke or was breaking and cracking they replaced them and no one was hurt but let’s not talk about what could of happened. I have had two sets on my bike that were cracking. After the second set cracked they gave me a third set, but I won’t put them on my bike. Another buddy of mine had black ones and the throttle side came off in his hand when he was riding, so be cautious of it inspect your handlebars before you ride next and make sure you don’t have any cracks. I subscribed to your channel because I want to see if you come back with a video about it. The last set that cracked, and I talked to KST about they wanted to act like they didn’t believe me. They had me send the handlebars back to them that were cracked was actually kind of rude at that point but it’s not my fault their handlebars cracked. In my opinion, they should be using a thicker gauge metal to begin with, but at the very least they should not be sanding their welds so much just to make it, smooth that they thin the metal to the point of it, being weak. Be careful and inspect your bars. Stay safe.
I will inspect my bars when I get home tonight. I hope they are ok! I have at least 30,000 miles of travel on mine without any issues so far. I'm curious to know exactly which weld failed. These are 3 piece bars. Each piece has at least 1 weld
so i'm confused about the saddle bag speakers . Can you hear them or is it just for the passenger? years ago they put them around the tour pak witch seamed to work.
I don't have any water leaks on my speakers. They have been tested through many rain storms and bike washes. I have had other people contact me to let me know there speakers leak. One guy send me a video! Looked like they were leaking through the tweeter.

My Mustang is a 66. I will do a video on it one of these days
Great video. I’m not a Harley rider (BMW rider myself), but I was drawn by the Don’t Give Up The Ship banner. Go Navy!
Don't Give Up The Ship is one of my favorite sayings/cliche/naval story
Me- Look again
Wife- Oh that looks like a 66
Me laughing- Did you just grab a yr out of the air how would you know?
Just started following you Brother and I must say it is one of the best videos I've seen. Very Authentic and informative. Keep doing what you do.
Thank you! I appreciate the the feedback
21" wheels are standard on many CVO models so they shouldn't be hard to get. I understand your feelings about radio/music.
Great, my 2014 Citadel has load leveling shocks, however, on my adventure bike I have to set the preload on the rear spring when is loaded with luggage and camping gear. .
This is my first experience with them on a motorcycle....they are amazing!!!
Nice work. Good to see an honest review of the things you would have done differently. The learning process and buying the wrong things for your bike can be expensive lessons.
You got that right! That was not a complete list either! I've got several parts in my garage that are collecting dust
Great video. I love when I can watch a youtube motorcycle content with my kids closeby and not have to worry about insulting or disresprectul language
I appreciate you saying that. I am very deliberate about ensuring that my channel is kid friendly. I remove any "slip ups" in editing!
Love your channel. You do a nice easy to listen to job. Very informative. Thanks

If you only do one upgrade, get a seat! You can thank me later!
Ride safe!
I'm a big fan of Wilburs Suspension. Made a HUGE difference in ride quality on my bike.
The Tall Boy is a good seat. I have the Hammock (which has been reupholstered).

Man, Spoken like a sailor! Soul bearing and on point! Thank you for your advice! And as always Go Navy!
Thank you sir! I assume you're a Navy man yourself?
For me the exhaust, and seat are immediate. I actually love the factory bars. The suspension would be low on my list to be honest, but I could see why someone would maybe want to change them. I tried with and without the heel shifter, and after 12 years, the heel shifter stays. I don't trust others to cut my bags, however I can't cut up a pristine piece just because I want a little more sound.
If you like the room on the floorboard and like using a heel shifter, you should look into the Paul Yaffe Stealth Heel Shifter. i'll always have one on my bike from here on out.
I'll have to check it out!
Hello Gordy here i have a 2015 c v o road glide that i love the bike is stock except for a ledgens heavy duty front and rear suspension and a pair of Michelin tires the bike handles and rides like a dream it is night and day better than stock set up spend the money its worth it
Agreed! I'm sold on suspension upgrades....especially if you ride a lot.
In my humble opinion the best upgrade you did was to install the Wilber’s suspension it it a set and forget system. Did you replace the front springs from their kit or just do the rear suspension. As far as the stitching on the seat use saddle soap on seat it will help in sealing the stitching holes just use it regularly
I did the front and rear....it is AMAZING! Its the best upgrade I have done for rider comfort.
Thanks! I haven't had any issues yet. From what I've read, the largest tire I can go to is a 21" so hopefully I won't have any issues
Are the solid wheels affected by cross winds?
@@RidingandWrenching not that I can tell. Haven’t had an issue with that. Just extremely heavy.
86-91. Go Navy!
USS John A Moore FFG19 a long long time ago!
Don't remember off the top of my head 4 mistakes, but I did make a mistake trying to clean my tank and scratched it up. Another mistake was when I got tires, I told them I needed tubes as well because I have spoke wheels, and they told me they would inspect my tubes to see if they needed to be replace, well that lasted 6 months then had to replace the tube!
ouch! You have to trust your own judgement!
My biggest mistakes on my former Street Glide CVO 2017 -
1) adding color LED lights, well it looked good, but I lived in Germany back then and it just got dark so late during summer that I never really used them... money I could have spend better
no other mistakes
Liked the Stage IV upgrade to 131ci. A completely different experience and sound. 🙂 And not to forget about the fun leaving some of the racers behind me...
Bad Boy style windshield gave the bike a more aggressive look
Not much more to add to the CVO, but was always thinking about the Wilbert`s aftermarket suspension you have installed. Will go for it for my Road Glide.
Does the 131 run hotter than the stock motor? I'm thinking about doing that for my 18 RG
I won't go back to not having one

Great video. Beautiful bike and beautiful 66 mustang!!
My FLHTC came with a toe shifter, I couldn't get used to it on a big bike. And yes, after I added a heal shifter, I had no room for my big foot. So I replaced them with extended shift levers. All is right with the world.
I love having the room to move my foot around. I feel like my foot is in jail when I have a heal shifter
Thank you
2000? road glides been around that long?
@@stanmorton8975 yep, since 1998.
Love your garage! Fellow Sailor. Breeze in the knees.
Informative video. First time viewer. I love my heel shifter. Ride safe Sir!
Same to you sir!
Thank You for your service.
I appreciate that!
It also make the ride rougher
2. Changing headers and air intake - It messes up the stock tuning and aftermarket tuning never gets it right; keep the stock headers but change the mufflers only
3. Saddlebag speakers - can't be heard at highway speed and always breakup; total waste of money
That's awesome! I'll look for it
You just earned another subscriber I’ve seen a couple of your videos in the past and your consistent clarity of communication makes your channel one of the better ones out there plus being a Navy guy myself how can I not follow you!
GO NAVY!!
Great info. Never heard of Wilbers suspension. I’ll check them out.
Wilbers is very impressive. I wish I had done this upgrade sooner.
I had the same problems with my KST Spearheads. Live and learn.
I can't install the little screws that hood the speedo housing in place! I still love the bars, but those little screws are useless
To fix your stitching color use a red sharpie. Just touch it to the stitch and it wicks the color back into it. Depending on how much exposure your stitching gets to the sun, it may need done a couple times a year. Had to do it to my wife’s flames on her leather saddlebags every year on her old bike.
I'll give it a try! Might be a good topic for a video! Thank you!
I’ve added extended brake lever and extended heel shifter. Solves the room issue and is more comfortable. By the way great video, I’m subbed.
I keep hearing about the extended brake lever. I need to look into that. Great suggestion!
I don't know about other models, but for Sportsters, try to get every parts OEM - if you know what you are doing, and have mechanical tools and inclination, get a Baker's 6 speed transmission upgrade.
I'll have to look that up.
Wow! That was some creative problem solving. Do you still have that bike?
First time to the channel and great stuff. Always been on the bubble on the speakers. Have a 21 RGL and have legends all the way around. Ride safe
Don't hesitate on the speakers! They are awesome. Reach out to Volunteer Audio. They will take care of you
Great video with a lot of good points.
Had to cut the length also
@@jimhannon2154 great idea! Thanks for the picture!
Love ya Brother!! The Don from Pittsburgh PA. US NAVY 1979-1981 🥰🥰
I seen some people commenting about messing up their shoes with the toe shifter. Check out the bung king shoe saver. 12 bucks and it works!
I'll check it out!
Great video sir. I enjoy your presentation and content...
I just pulled off the heel shifter today, put it back on..Im about to take it off again now.
Once you get use to having all that space....no going back
Good video. Thanks for the advice.
Thanks for watching!
Nice video sir I agree on the heel shifter I removed mine. I love my police seat. I love my 2into 1 pipe. I love my led lighting upgrades and custom dynamics horn.
I don’t like my 12 inch bars I wish I had gone for 10.
Thanks Andy! I also ordered a backrest for the police seat.
Would you mind emailing a picture to me? ridingandwrenching@gmail.com
Thank you for your clear, unbiased report...... New subscriber here!
Thanks you!
I have size 13 shoe. Put extended heel shifter and rear brake pedal and some of the best things I ever did. Highway pegs for long rides. Also changed all the lights to LED for safety.
I'm adding more lights to the front for solo night time riding.
Great Video! Very Informative! Nice Rig! Ida Lee is looking good! Thank you sir! God Bless Be Safe!
Thanks for watching!
Love my heel shifter. Put saddle bag speakers in RG. No leaks. Did it myself.
What brand of speaker did you choose?
Stay safe.
Would you happen to have a picture that you could share? Ridingandwrenching@gmail.com
The water does not leak through the Tweeter. The water leaks through the mounting of the 6 x 9 to the ring that you have.
I don't have any water leaks on my speakers. They have been tested through many rain storms and bike washes. I have had other people contact me to let me know there speakers leak. One guy send me a video! Looked like they were leaking through the tweeter.
