Kim, I agree. Red was guilty of murder, lived an honorable life in prison....and finally admitted his crime with genuine regret. That was his redemption. 💖
And at the very end Red says "I hope the Pacific is as blue as it is in my dreams..I hope to see my friend and shake his hand..I hope" beautiful writing!
While I used to consider this my all-time favorite film until about 20 years ago, I've since backed off a bit from that stance after learning how many story elements Stephen King lifted from the 1979 film "Escape from Alcatraz" (the hardass warden, the black friend of the main protagonist, the institutionalized old guy who gets his livelihood taken away from him, the guys who try to violate the main protagonist, etc.) -- and apparently also the 1956 film " A Man Escaped" (though I still haven't seen that one).
@@ComeOnIsSuchAJoy "A Man Escaped" will give you the claustrophobic, mind-killing, what-will-they-do-to-me-next? feeling that captured Maquis experienced . It's a marvel that it was made so soon after World War II, but the memories it must have triggered among FFI partisans. See it ASAP!

@@amandatidey5751 for real, for Brooks it was such a sad case. The two reasons Andy was still determined to break out was because he only stayed for 19 years and he was wrongly accused
The 2 moments from the movie that really got me. 1) when Brooks is let out and goes back to the world. That whole sequence is so heartbreaking. And 2) when Red is let out and at his job asks to go to the bathroom. I don’t know why, but the contrast of the scenes is really sad

Although set in Maine, the prison used was the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio. The large main building and Cell Block 1 are now a Museum. They offer tours, can be used for special occasions, and offer overnight cell accommodations for the brave. ( haunted ) The street scenes were primarily N. Main St where the shop owners agreed to have their stores redone to fit the time period. Many still look the same. The halfway house is the Bissman Building, and still looks the same today. (It was a beer distributor, hence the name "Brewery") The store was the E and B Market on 4th Street which has been torn down. I was fortunate to be an extra con in the yard scenes. The premiere was held at Mansfield's Renaissance Theatre, a restored 1929 movie palace, before New York and Los Angeles. I volunteered working the theatre restoration. The prison was also used in the movie "Tango & Cash” and was the Russian cell block in "Airforce One". An interesting side note: In the bad winters, crows from 7 or 8 counties move into Mansfield by the hundreds due to large granaries that used to be between town and the prison. Brook's crow was a natural. The passage of time from the unfiltered Chesterfields to the filtered cigarettes offered Tommy by the warden, and the subtle aging of everyone is superb. Many people miss the subtlety of when Brooks left the prison, you see the prison through the gates, and when Red left you are looking forward over the fields toward the town. "You see this man, with his schemes starting to come apart, they use violence. That's what @*&holes do." Respectfully, I'd say that's what fear causes people to do. They are afraid of what others will think, so they disallow the possibility of exposure. I've said it before, elsewhere, but, NOTE TO SELF: if I ever create a plan that prevents someone from second-guessing me, this is a sign that the plan NEEDS second-guessing.

Shawshank Redemption is in my top 10 all time favorite movies. I'm glad I had the chance to see it in the theater when it was out. 1994...such an amazing year, The Shawshank Redemption, Forrest Gump, and Pulp Fiction all coming out all vying for best picture.
I would love for you to react to "The Color Purple"
You have a gift for seeing the future. Ive never seen anyone who knew right off the bat, don’t look behind the poster.
"You see this man, with his schemes starting to come apart, they use violence. That's what @*&holes do."
Respectfully, I'd say that's what fear causes people to do. They are afraid of what others will think, so they disallow the possibility of exposure. I've said it before, elsewhere, but, NOTE TO SELF: if I ever create a plan that prevents someone from second-guessing me, this is a sign that the plan NEEDS second-guessing.
I guess it's time for The green mile if you haven't seen it.
You can see how the same people that collaborated for this movie did The Green Mile. Both big fat bawl-fests.
What if there was a grate on the end of the sewer pipe?
Literally commented for you to watch this on the titanic video yesterday!! :)
Ummm....being in prison brings the wrongfully-convicted comfort? Is that really what you meant to say?
Would you be comforted by living the rest of your life in prison for a crime you didn't commit?
Stephen King tells some great stories and I'd suggest The Green Mile. I see others have said as much so...just add my vote to theirs. It's worth it.
