The first version had Basia singing in it. She left Matt Bianco, and Mark Reilly decided to re-record it after she left. I would guess it was re-recorded to avoid paying her royalties. I think both versions are good.

I like both versions but the version with the female voice has something special, it's my favorite :) I noticed the same thing for another artist's compilation: the female backing vocalist replaced by an instrument, probably for the same reason you give.@@RippedfromVHS
