You can use christmas decoration snow spray to matte the shiny surfaces. 3D scanners may get cheaper but photoscanning software may get keener too. You never know.

I have an observation with my limited experience with scanning.
Would you have been better off using spray on magniflux (white titanium oxide) in a spray can, to deglaze the object?
In the second test you probably didn't need the lumpy baking soda which I think made your result lumpy.
Could you please try that with a smooth surface with a dulling agent and post the results?

Make sure that you DO NOT pay a single cent, after trying out all the programs out there the BEST quality I have EVER gotten was from a free program called MeshRoom and it is SO amazing that the best quality comes from a free program !

Yes, there are programs out there that allows you to combine multiple photogrammetry derived models together to cover up holes or missing data.
Yeah, an infrared scanner would be good in the dark but you won't have much luck getting texture color in the dark.
When I am using the XZY Scanner, I would sometimes turn off the lights because surprisingly, it lose tracker way less that way...I know why but man that is another video to explain :D
Thanks for the video and clearing the Photogrammetry vs 3d Scanner subject in such detailed. It pretty much answer all my questions. My main language is Spanish and English is my second language. I had trouble understanding most youtubers as most of them are Tony Stark fast talkers in such complex subject as digital scanners. Yours was very clear and with a little humor. Eyo, have you tried using a polarizing filter to get rid of reflexions on shiny surfaces?
Hello Zemesis, even with polarizing filters, photogrammetry only works if there are patterns for the software to track, so remember to pattern it up ;p
What about spraying the shiny objects with a clear matte polyurethane?

Hair spray! It's cheap, you can get it anywhere, you can wash it off with warm water. You angle it a bit and spray from like 2 feet distance so it clumps together by the time it lands on the object, and it creates a dull layer, makes dark bits appear less dark too.

I am using MeshRoom, it is FREE and it is very VERY GOOD. Better than most paid photogrammetry software !

Hi Bracer, I'm doing some 3D scanning and photogrammetry myself, but was wondering if you can help me solve a problem. When 3D scanning a dark surface I believe these dark surfaces absorb the infrared light so, in the end, the sensor can't detect it, leaving holes in the mesh. I think this is the biggest downfall to 3D scanning, but was wondering if you have a solution?
To give you an idea I'm making a head scanner and sensor always has trouble scanning black and dark hair, I'm also using Realsense SR300 with ReconstructMe, all other details come out fine though, just a big hole in people's head if they have dark hair. Cheers, Phil.

You have a number or challengers there !
1: You have to MAKE SURE every hair strand stays EXACTLY the way they are and in the SAME position while using your 3D scanner or photogrammetry, so you need either those expensive multi-camera setup or an X-men with the ability to stop time.
Short man hair will be ok.
2: Your assessment of the dark surface absorbing the infra light is valid, black absorb all lights, that's why it's black, but the situation would be worst if the 3D scanner software tries to use the part of the camera that picks up color as a guide.
When I am scanner an all black surface, I always turn off ALL lights, ZERO light source and use PURELY the infra information to derive geometry data, the result is amazingly good but you will have no color data.
Since you are scanning human, you would want color information, so you can buy one of those temporary hair color wax to color your subject's hair and ask them to wash it off after the scan, again not applicable for long hair.
Using a 360 Kinect would that be a form of photogrammetry or something more like the ciclop? If you think it is more like the DIY ciclop method what do you think is best?
Using the Kinect will be like using a 3D scanner, because it's a two camera system :D
Which one is better ? Because I don't have both to test, I cannot give you an answer and I am not about to pretend to know :D
Can photogrammetry be used for car interiors and exteriors in the same pass? Or if I took photos of every square inch of my house, room by room, would it reconstruct it or does it only work on simple objects?
It can, as long as you take enough shots of multiple angles and there are not too many shiny things that will "throw off" the calculation.
Would projecting a pattern onto the object help when photogramming the object?
Yes, make sure that the pattern is sharp, make sure that no point in time do your presence interfere with the pattern cast on the object.

You might also consider spraying the item with plastidip. if you have a high enough resolution camera, you can pull texture out of flat smooth surfaces.

Use a turntable for the PART (like for plants from IKEA, 5$), and put the 3D Scanner on a tritop. Then rotate the part. That way you have a much more stable system.

It's changed the entire way I view 3d content creation. Being able to sample the world to build a game environment from a library of things I've experienced in reality is surreal and wonderful. Thanks for such competent coverage of the subject.
Curio Fawkstrawt It really is ! However, most of the things I like to digitize are smooth and shiny in nature and the idea of spraying things on them to matte them is a little work.
For smooth objects, I use a light dusting of baby powder and typically get great results with a makeup brush. It is a pretty tricky workflow to pull off at times. :)

I have question about photogrammetry ...I want to use Macro lens on Canon 5D Mark II for photogrammetry, what is your opinion? or I want make a 3D scanner with Canon 5D Mark II with Macro lens and laser technology, Is that possible?
I often use a 100mm macro on a Canon 5D, for small objects. The key is maximising depth of focus over the object and really crisp infocus images.

Why not combine both visual data via a DSLR & a infrared scanner combo with over under configuration?
The quality between the two methods can be so different that overlaying both might actually lower the quality of the resulting model.
good video with good information. it got me thinking... now i know why my photogrammetry was not working as well as i had hoped. Not enough detail! i will try to put stickers/removeable tape on it instead of drawing on it. hopefully that will add some texture allowing me to get the smoothe parts bettter! thanks.

an easy way to make sure you get every angle with photogrammetry is to record video at a low framerate and then just walk around the subject a few times, that way you can't forget an angle.
For a quality mesh I cannot agree. Crisp, in focus low iso and low compression artefacts are critical for good geometry.

Hello Gabriel, I see you like Gundam too ! My favorite is 78-2 Version 3.
Photogrammetry works by tracking patterns on the surface, if the entire surface is black, there would be nothing to track.
oh i see, so stripes and patterns would be good right? and i love Gundam! i thought "hm maybe scanning the runners of a kit and modifying them or changing scale would be really cool" that's why i'm looking for stuff like this haha
yeah it would hurt to mess a good kit, it would need to be a new kit just for that haha i also thought after watching your video "simple VR from photogrammetry" if it's possible pull the 3D model from a game like Gundam Versus, put in the Unreal Engine(?) and boom! real size Gundam in VR! that would be cool too

Bracer Jack Yeah, that's for sure, but industrial metrology with 0.01mm scan precision isn't cheap these days, wondering how long it would take to have this sort of technology in our homes right next to a 3D printer. :)
I use a app on my Iphone 11 pro which does exactly a great job that some higher end devices do. I'm using the app called TRnio

Can someone explain why the scanner did not pick up the visor on the red ranger helmet?
Infrared light still works a lot like normal light in that it can be absorbed by dark colors, so the black visor (and black colors in general) can still give 3d scanners a hard time.

Because it "reflects" the infra light emitted by the scanner in a way that is not conducive to how the scanner interpret the returning data :D
Could you project texture on to an object to make photogrammetry work without desecrating the object? You would of course have to ensure that the projector and object maintained exactly the same positions for all pictures. (don't bump anything while moving the camera around) I suppose you might want a second set of photos with the projector off for coloring the model.

Yes projecting light on smooth surfaces will work, but here are the things you need to make sure of.
1: The projection must be SHARP ! NO BLUR ! Or else the software will go "Huh...where is the edge on that line that is suppose to be there ? Is it there or not there ?!!" on you.
2: Yes like you say, you CANNOT accidentally block off the light, or else, you effectively created another pattern as far as the software is concern.
it looks like you could potentially use bits of colored tape that you cut into small marker shapes, or just scotch tape and then apply a marker to that and then peel off after, although that's difficult on irregular surfaces. Would that work?
Also, what software are you using for the photogrammetry? The results are impressive.
Or those little confetti size, coloured stickers they sell at office supply stores. I also thought of spattering water based finger paints with a tooth brush, as long as it's a smooth, non-porous surface. (like glossy plastic)

Can you try the photogrammetry on a shiney object with a circular polarizer on? It might be enough to cut the shiney down and give better detail.
Cutting down the Shine is ALWAYS a good thing, but always remember that the "shine" a.k.a specular, is not part of the geometry, so no shine is the best ;p
By the way, I checked out your video and saw that you are from Australia ? I am visiting the place in September !
True, I'm looking at trying it with my dslr. Would the software handle doing the polarizer set to vertical for 1 rotation of the table, then set it horizontal and do another rotation, you would get alternating shine I guess.
Good that it is september, it gets damn hot after that. You will beat the wet season too probably, that is more jan-may.

Wouldn't a pre-scan with a 3d-scanner, with a very large grid be a very good method to automatically determine how large the object is and then use software to calculate the optimal settings for that object?
Pretty much like regular old-school flatbed-scanners used to only scan the way you told them, but now offer support to scan various parts of a page with different resolutions, after a pre-scan is made.
To me, it seems more like a limitation of current software, than a limitation of 3d-scanning in general.
I think, with scanners and their software, especially in combination with printers (2-in-1) could give us extreme increase in detail in the future. If you could scan an object in your printer and then use the scanner of the printer to verify that the print is within specifications, sending necessary changes to the software during runtime, 3d-printing will definitely take a leap forward in my opinion.
Together with multi-filament-printing and using different filament-strengths on the same print, I think we have a long way to go to make 3d-printing how it's supposed to be ;-)
so... buy a few cans of matte plastidip and spray whatever you need to photogram with a random assortment of colours. then peel it off after.

That I can export into a 3D editing program to carve using my CNC machine. So fare I have not found any app that works with my iPhone 6. Best of luck to you. Lee Noring
I used an app called 'Qlone' with reasonable success.
You should always use invert colors for the background.

It is possible...but...because the images must be of decent quality, use a camera instead :-)
And also you need high resolution for Photogrammetry to track and recognize patterns.
Can't you just diffuse light? Control lighting around the object to remove shine (add sheer curtains, lampshade, etc something to create "paper lantern effect" this makes shiny surface matte surface)
Bracer Jack it was more of a question. I saw someone else talk about it on RUclips. He also sprinkled non permanent ink onto the object that can be wiped off later (to create random dot patterns).
I wanted to see how effective this is when various people try it. Not just one random guy on youtube...

I don't have any of this scanners or software. I'm researching this because I want to try 3d modeli g but don't have much money so I want to buy 1 product 1 time that works well for me.
