- This video was taken at the Severn Valley railway at the Diesel Bash in May 2021. Its footage of Diesel Locomotives and hopefully a little bit of Diesel Thrash. Class 50, Class 15, Class 47, Class 40, Class 20 Diesel Locomotives can be seen and heard. Including Class 42 Warship and Class 52 Western. This is a video about heritage British Diesel Locomotives. Heritage railway England United Kingdom UK. Preserved Locomotives
I realize I am a bit - odd. but- I could watch & ride these all day / every day. Incredible workhorses, magnificent engineering & endless styles.. These took our soldiers, our children, & brought them home again.. to & from wars, & life ...
Well we are 78 & 80 and we love this video. We both have always loved trains. We live in the San fresco area of california. & we love all of martins videos. Thank you so much.
Brilliant thanks to the railway enthusiasts who preserve the quality locomotives and the stations,, track etc new trains here have a truck engine under the floor in the carriage,, crap noise,, from Northern Ireland greatly appreciated thank you for the video ☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️
Martin I loved it, thank you very much.
It is always a pleasure to hear a diesel or see the old steam trains driving, delicious and pleasing to the eye. 🥰😍
You may have already been there, but if you haven't heard enough diesel or other very old machines, you can let your heart and your ears enjoy the, ... Internal Fire Museum of power in Wales.
There are very old historic machines, volunteers run the place there, ooohhh also awesome to be able to watch and listen wonderful. 🙋🏻♀️🥰👍🏻 It's a pleasure to know someone like you, with the same interests, and we'll keep things moving by honoring these by visit them, beautiful places hey Martin.
That clasd 40 at the start that is named 'Atlantic Conveyor'. This was the name of a British merchant vessel, requisitioned for use by British forces in the 1982 Falklands war. She was hit by two Exocet missiles, and set on fire, whilst transporting helicopters. 12 crew were lost. She sank whilst under tow a couple of days later. I'm glad she was remembered this way.
This video is an utter joy to me, Martin. Thank you so much for doing this. My favourite engine on it, is the class 20 in London Transport colours, 'Sherlock Holmes' - what a beautiful beast.
So relaxing to watch martin, birdsound mixed with train sound.... and looks like the rain kept off you also,, love it! Thanks so much for sharing ❣🔴🟡🟢
Thanks Ruth cant beat a bit of Diesel
Holiday's in the 70's, footbridge over the tracks at Dawlish Warren - Blue class 52's very nice memories. Thanks Martin.
There's nothing like a Western. (Except maybe a Warship or Hymek!)
That was great, love the sounds, back in '97 my colleague and I painted Wester Ranger in BR blue, that was a big job. From the cooler groups at the top to the tumble home and to the battery / fuel covers is about 13 feet and it's 65 feet long, one of us at the top, the other at the bottom to keep the wet edge going. Make sure you go to the loo first, once started, there is no stopping!
Brings back memories of the class 37's rattling through the Tyne Valley with loaded coal trains from the Northumberland and Durham coalfields.
Them tractors make the best noise ever.
Enjoying the peaceful ambience and solitude of rumbling diesels.
Great to see so many different types of diesel.
Yea I love the class 15 and 20
Absolutely magic. What beasts of beauty they are, and so good that this industrial archaeology is being preserved. Wonderful film.
All classes 31,33,37,40,47,50,thundering along the embankment at mills Hill with mixed freight, oil, minerals, post and passengers, the whistle of a 40 on idle, and the tick over of a 37 and 47, part of my soul X rooby
I worked on a short line railroad here in the U.S. years ago and made up a lot of trains. I do not envy the man coupling cars with the buffer and screw method.
Put the steam engines away, the diesel boys are here to play!
Fantastic variety of engines running on this beautiful line.
Brilliant video as ever Martin!
Grew up near Skelton Junction/Black Bridge. Air raid shelter, iron bridges, 3 rail lines and derelict turntable! Used to hop on and hitch a ride, first one off was a jessy!
11 Seconds in and you can hear the sound of my childhood! An idling 40....aaaaaaah!
My recollections too. Car transporters being hauled past Wakefield late into the evening while laid in bed as a kid.
@@Steve_Wardley_G6JEF I grew up in Latchford, Warrington and the embankment was 100 yards from my house and right next to my grandparents and my primary school backed onto it...we used to see car transporters as well but the sound of a 40 idling at Latchford signal box......at 3am😍👍
@@jimmyviaductophilelawley5587 Diesel pornography. Love it. They seemed to be mainly Ford vehicles on RoRo stock past me.
Brilliant Jimmy
@@Steve_Wardley_G6JEF I can't remember the car types on ours it was mostly coal hopper trains for fiddles ferry power station.....the line ends just behind my sister's house now and the rest is part of the trans-pennine trail....still days like this and the ELR diesel gala let me float down memory lane...best wishes and take care
They’re all up and running then that’s lovely, I went there as a little lad throwing coal into Taw Valley’s firebox thanks for bringing that back mate!
Thanks for giving us the opportunity to sit back and look at the engines! That looked like a cracking day out on the SVR, well done for capturing a terrific record of your time there. On a side note, I was contracted by BR in 1990 to photograph the transition into private ownership of the railway network and got to record the last of the Hoovers (Class 50) climbing the incline near Honiton, and rapidly became acquainted with the sound of that particular engine from miles off. Not sure if the photography was up to much, as the weather was terrible that week. That’s colour transparency for you: unforgiving.
Thanks for posting this Martin. I get to see places I would never see otherwise. Love to youall🤗🤗
Martin , its a shame i no longer work for the railways being a railway nurse had its advantages , but it looks like you enjoyed your trains , i love my manchester to london on the footplate it was alot of fun , i was treated to the northern belle orient express now that was something else ! stunning art deco carriages, plus Her majesty train that was a stunning train , i only saw her once in crewe ! no one can go near her ! The orient express goes from manchester victoria its such a stunning train ! its worth photos it’s gorgeous i had one trip to Anglesey , cant remember the second one busy eating the five star menu ! hoped you all enjoyed your trips !
40 106. Had that BITD as a relief driver on 3 driving turns, only one I really remember was a class 8 coal train Guide Bridge to Northwich and back. This takes me back! Glad to see you had a great bash mate. Cheers.
Lost Worlds, Martin. I remember seeing all that back in the day. Poignant.🇯🇪
Another great video. Many memories from the early 1970s in those sights and sounds. I didn't realise there was just one Clayton left! I thought they'd saved two of the three that British Rail Research used.
Nice one once again. I know I'm commenting on an old video but I'm ploughing my way through all the your videos. Great to see and hear 40 106 again but you can't beat the sound of those twin Maybach's of Western Champion.
Great to see the Chuggington live-action episode released!
Thanks a lot, Martin. Sad not to see a Deltic, but I've since read that only six were saved from the scrapyard and only one of these is operational. Still, I have fond memories of seeing *and hearing* these big beasts at my local station (Leeds).
Love the old diesels 37 47 deltics what sounds !
After I get things back to together a heritage railway is a must do
Martin you must really really love trains👍
Well I did, they are now like an ild friend
@@MartinZero Now excuse me while I fill in my cops.
Great to see these preserved railways back in business post covid, great shots. Thanks for sharing.
Fantastic video Martin, the noise on the class 40 and the class 20 were amazing. Even those class 50’s sounded superb. Looked like a proper fun weekend, bet you can’t wait to do another Diesel Gala. Loved it mate. 😀👍🏻
That was great. All the colours of the engines and carriages and the greenery round about was brilliant. Thank you. Felt quite nostalgic. Days of long ago when I watched “the choo choos”. Loved it
Thanks Shirley. Iam partial to a Diesel
Great video Martin. You may already know this, but there is a link to the Manchester area on the Severn Valley railway. The paint shop building at Bridgnorth is the old diesel depot building from Heaton Mersey in Stockport which the SVR bought from British Rail in the 70s. Heaton Mersey had a large steam loco shed but when this closed at the end of the 60s, BR built a diesel servicing point which only lasted for about 3 or 4 years before it too was closed. All the best and keep up the great videos.
Only the Royal train had locos that smart and shiny!
Interesting to watch, no idea what I was seeing.
Great video...
Thanks Sir John
great video well done great to see these old diesels.
Great video, thanks for sharing
Hi Martin great couple of vids. The 50007 seems to be redesignated 500014 when it was refurbished (I think) it is labelled on internet as " 50007 (as 500014)". I can't believe they were all built just up the road from me in Vulcan village, I live in Great Sankey about 3 miles from there and never new. Smashing stuff anyway thanks again Martin.
Guess you could do that all day long without getting tired, can't you ? :-) I'm son of a railway signal engineer and spent a lot time in trains, at stations or even along the track, when accompanying my Dad in the mid-70s. And: nothing beats the sound of a slowly revving up Diesel. When I was a kid in the 60s there were still a few steam locos in daily use. But I didn't find them *that* interesting as Diesel locomotives. And electro-trains ? Well. As fascinating as a vacuum-cleaner ... do their job but lack the aural impression.
Diesel heaven 🙌 Love the Warship's and the Clayton shutters! Cracking video Martin! :-)
I really wanted to cab or engine one of them
Rental Company: Lovely tranquil place, but there is a railway nearby.
Martin: Oh I didn't know that!
How did I know I was going to enjoy this one?
Miss the excitement and noise of the class fortys and forty sevens coming round the bend at clifton just before Kearsley power station making their way to Bolton and beyond
I bet that was brilliant, it was on our line as well
Love!! I have the class 40 and 47 for hornby. 💪 the hole family are loving these uploads 🙏💥🥰
Nice Natalie do they have DCC sound
@@MartinZero no 😣 but thats this years gift 🤭😁
So glad people saved these from thw scrap yards it would be a shame to have lost such amazing trains
Great content bet you had a great day watching all the trains going up and down. I could ride all day on those old trains brilliant.
Yeah it was good to see em again
some nice preservation there martin
This stuff might all be 60+ years old, but it all looks brand new!
it is called preservation, and is what the SVR is realy good at
Yeah they have done a great job on the stock and Loco's
We could do with some handy lads over here, to rebuild the Selby & Driffield Railway......... Or at least the first 20 miles of it, from Selby to Market Weighton.
Great video, without the talking just train noises and natraul sounding surroundings
What a wonderful video Martin! It quite often reminded me of an episode of Thomas the Train. I kept waiting for Ringo Star to start narrating. Some beautiful old trains and architecture.
Brilliant to watch Martin.
Martin ... This is just great!! I am 50yrs younger again. Thanks!!
So relaxing to watch. Thank You Martin for all the work you put into you work (video art)!
Thanks Martin that was fantastic. Take care and all the best. Stevie
aaahh, those whistling turbos❤️👍🏻
Martin - did you ever see the Class 17 ' Clayton ' that spent time based at the Manchester Longsight Shed in the 70's? Had photos of it ...somewhere ... Loved that ' middle cab ' look ...
Love it Martin!
Can’t beat the sound of an old Deisel . Those engines are immaculate . Great video 👌🏼🧱👍🏽
Bonus episode! Well done, Martin!
Cheers Arne, bit of pure Diesel power
Loved your enthusiastic reflection on the body of the Class 50. You looked lile you were in diesel heaven.
There is something incredible about the sound the old big diesel trains make. Especially with a bit of turbo spool as they pull away. They all seem to be kept in very good condition. History is preserved and put to use at the same time. Nicely put together video, as always!
Wow, what a great show, love the sound of those old diesels - the 37's, 47's, and not forgetting that lovely class 40. Chuck in a class 50 and your set! I must get down to the railway for one of their diesel days - not quite old enough to remember steam on the main line, but those old diesels will bring back some memories. Looked to be a grand day out, Martin, shame the weather was not a bit nicer for you.
Love trains. Being a tomboy used to love hanging around the railway tracks and watching them. Then enjoyed the NYM railway when I lived over that way. Thanks for sharing Martin 😊
Thanks for the upload Martin! Love the sounds, especially the 52, even the horn sounds amazing. Those and the 20's and 40's make such a great noise. Modern locos sound so dull, silenced into submission, unlike these gnarly beasts!
I think That brown engine still pulls the chives regal whiskey tanks through glasgow to the bottling plant at breahead i can remember it cause it was also used to pull the grain waggons through airdrie to the inver house distillery when i was young
Did you ever find out why 'warspite' had both 007, and 014 on it.?
Or does anyone else know.?
Thanks for your time.
LOVE THE VIDEOS🥰.
KEEP 'em COMING🥰🥰.
RICH 🥰🥰.
From the days when things had character, now they are just machines with function over form.
Excellent video Martin!
quite a variety of power! hey was that a functioning facsimile of Stephenson's Rocket ??
Very cool! Not your average trains that go passed the back of my garden to Cardiff!
That 8S68 and D 9551 very different to what I normally see.
That station with the 50035 sat waiting looked straight out of a film!
The GBRF looked fab too.
Wow! Not a train buff but I'd gladly take pics if I saw them somewhere.
What were the tennis bat things a few of them were exchanging?
Awesome Martin, simply awesome 👍
Thank you
When I went to Western Australia in 1965 I joined the WAGR and need as Signalman 2nd class at Fremantle. This brought back so many memories. Our rules were taken from BR that included what to do in "fog and falling snow" Not that we ever got the latter. Must go to Bridgenorth when the weather is a little better.
Good to see you in the middle of the week. Thanks for posting. Those engines are amazing.
That's better, pure diesel sights and sounds and nothing else, all manner of beautiful engine noises. Why no mention of the 33 - too Southern for you!!!!!😀😁😃🤣🤔👍🏻❤
Hi Bob you mean in the original video ? I had to save some good ones for this video. Not too Southern I love a 33 I have nothing against the south 😃
@@MartinZero You were lucky back in the day with all the big powerful stuff, 37s, 40s, 47s and 56s - nice!!

Wooooow what fantastic content ❤👌👍🏻
Martin, this was a midweek treat. Thanks for posting on a Wednesday, this was a great watch. I still like steam but you're starting to make me look at diesel loco's more and the history of them. Thanks........ Saw you as a guest on trekking & Towpaths the other day. Stay safe, stay strong.
A great collection of well preserved diesels they've got there.
Fantastic! So many amazing restored locomotives and passenger cars! It would be a dream to volunteer their! Too bad I am 5000 miles away haha! What a great weekend you had!
Really enjoyed that, thanks! Next best thing to being there - and 40106, what a beauty!
Mainly a steam guy but you can’t beat the sound of a big diesel loco. Would love to do the settle-Carlisle with either pulling me along did it yrs ago in my teens with a diesel up front really good. We must support these preserved railways all the guys b gals doing it for free and gratis I take my hat off to you all!!. Loved that Martin maybe do a steam one at some point? Even tho I no your into diesel porn.
Great video Martin all the best
It’s like living a childhood dream🥰🥰🥰. You and James are so lucky.
That was excellent thanks Martin, love the trains but love steam best of all. Really enjoyed this tho. Thanks for the share. Please stay safe and take care
Thanks Linda
Hey Martin! Love the videos. We wont be seeing James in any more railfan videos, he had enough trains for a year, lmao. Are all your engines named or just the museum pieces?
Great update like it very much.
Hope James didn't get too much soot on his plimsolls 🥴. Great video Martin - can't beat blood and custard livery 😁
Nice one Martin, enjoyed that video
fab. The sound of Atlantic Conveyor sends shivers !
love seeing the old diesel engines, I remember them as a child. You really should get together with Geoff Marshall for a joint venture
Brilliant bonus video Martin.
What about the sounds of those locos especially the Class 40. Beautiful! 👏👍🙂
Great work Martin (particularly the class 50’s!), hopefully I can get to the next Diesel Gala 🙏📷❤️
Awesome. Some powerful beasts there Martin !!
Ah Martin , you need to re-edit this video and add more names to the Diesels . Incredible images but for those of us not in GB , we're not familiar with them and the only way to get to know more is to look up the Models...if we had them . LOL ! Cheers ./SRK
Nice one Martin.
Is it Sunday already!?! The big man is passing through ELR soon... choo choo 🌼 Love and Blessings Always 🌼
Love the ELR its local to me
@@MartinZero i know I'm just up the road a stones throw away from the track 🌼
Hello Martin - Cat got your tongue or should that be Diesel got your tongue??? Glad to see you managed to get a few shots of a few Steam Locos aswell!!! 🤔🙂🚂🚂🚂
Enjoyed that, thanks.
Thanks for the bonus vlog, very enjoyable.
Nice traction over there, good to see Greyhound back in action, and Champion was finished in time as well for the gala.
How was it with Covid restrictions, I understood there were dedicated seats on the train for everyone and one was not allowed to swap trains?, but I see many people without face masks.
I have to ask this all because I'm from the Netherlands, but volunteer at the ELR and was regular on the ELR and at other railways before the pandemic, but wasn't able to visit the UK since.
I hope to have my first visit in September again, I'm called up for my vaccination now.
Yeas dedicated seats and booked onto one train only
