I used to live in St Albans way back in the 1960s residing at 319 Hatfield Road and attending Beaumont Secondary School... A beautiful town which holds many fond memories for me...

I would love to visit St. Albans. My Dad was originally from there before his family moved here to Australia.

Fantastic! I'm an American who worked in St Albans for 8 months in 2007. Love the place. I was reminiscing about it and this video really made my day, Thanks!

I love this! I was born and raised in St. Albans (1953-), and moved to Canada as a young girl with mum and dad. I still miss St. Albans dearly, ...not a day goes by that I don't think about trips to the sweet shop with my Gran's threepence in my hand, going up to St. Peters Street on the bus from Hatfield Road, the Rats' Castle right near my Grans' house, Ginger in the Market !, the lake, the Fighting Cocks, trips to the lake with my Grandad (where the swans chased us once!), dad worked at Chippington's Hatchery...I'll always love England, and my heart remains in St. Albans...

Well done, it is easy to forget how clear things used to be before all the clutter of today.
I appreciate all the hard work you put in to this. I couldn't help wishing you had morphed from the past to the present but then it is clear that the past was better in some respects!

Many thanks for the time/effort in doing this. Memories .. What is fascinating is the lack of cars( automobiles) and the number of people walking within the photos?

Fantastic video! I spent many years, both as a child and adult, in St. Albans. Although I'm originally from London, I've always regarded St. Albans and the Park Street area as my spiritual home. Thanks for posting.

I inherited quite a few to start and I've been given quite a few (the aerials and some of the very old ones), but mostly collected at postcard fairs and on ebay

Thoroughly enjoyed this, an excellent piece of work. Enjoyed all your pictures on Flickr too. Checked the new Britain from Above website, but at the moment they don't have as many pictures on St Albans as you do. Would love to see your efforts on Wheathampstead as I lived there as a child until my early 20's. 10 out of 10!!

Thank you for you kind comments and your generious score!, I do have Wheathampstead on my radar as a subject for a past and present film but just need to collect a few more before photos or postcards to make it worthwhile.

Fantastic work, whoever did this. Was it really you Andy? If so, do let me get you a cheeky pint in the Elephant & Castle, or the Mermaid, or anywhere, sometime soon. Really remarkable stuff. Especially notable is that that the road surface is now clearly worse than it was the better part of 100 years ago. Not surprised. However, I am completely confident Daisy Cooper will sort all that out. I would have looked for this sort of stuff before now, but I was waiting for the folk of St Albans to stop voting for the expense-fiddling 'flat for the daughter 'crook that was in place for years, doing naught, but scamming the system for her own gain while refusing to live here. Now that's all changed, I can admit I live here again. Woo hoo!

    Greebo,
    I'm glad you enjoyed this.
All the old photographs and a lot more are available to view on my Flickr photostream under the same name 'Wellsandlawrence', in the set 'St Albans Lilywhite postcards' it is No.55. On the page click on 'view all sizes' and from there you can download a copy for yourself.

    Thanks Rick,
Thank you for your kind comments, yes I do plan to do more only I need to collect some more postcards with suitable images.
Next I'm going to do one of some of the small villages around St Albans, like Harpenden, Wheathamstead, Redbourn and so on, and maybe another St Albans one next year.

Thank you for your kind comments, and good luck with your project on Muswell Hill. Apart from using all the usual video production tools the most useful program I found for doing the transitions from one picture to another is Fotomorph. And its free!

This is fabulous: thank you. At 0.46 there is a lovely shot of my old family home and business, Sear and Carter, nurserymen, seedmen and florists in Hatfield Road,( no.107). Is there any way that I can obtain a copy of your old b&w print of this, please? The entire house, shop and nursey were compulsorily purchased by St.Albans City Council circa 1960 and demolished to build some old people's flats: a gross piece of vandalism, in my view...my grandparents had been there since 1914.
