Interesting how the apartment building suffers only a partial collapse with the core of the building remaining mostly intact while all the other structures around it all suffer total collapse.
yep, buildings can't be very unpredictable for higher ground shaking intensities, but usually 99% of all steel buildings should survive a MMI: X. The steel building in this simulation collapsed at MMI: IX because there are NO shear walls in the whole structure.
I feel like these videos need a mounted camera in one of the buildings, maybe immune to the shaking, but imagine seeing the building tilt as it collapses.
Idk why, but for some reason, when the parking garage collapses almost immediately, it cracks me up. 😅 I think it's because that's one of the last things I'd expect to collapse since they're typically built pretty strong.
Fascinating as always. Is there variability in the sim or how the ground acceleration happens such that if you ran the same instensity level multiple times that you might get slightly different outcomes?
I can definitely do that :) In fact I can take data from all around the world of previous earthquakes and use that as an input for the simulated ground shaking.
I think this is good example of being situation when you're in the city and there's an earthquake and you'll will see what is gonna be happen By the way this is cool keeping up your content 💯👌

Because I find it a bit irrelevant. If you are 200 miles away from a 7.0 quake you'd barely feel any shaking... So the Mercalli scale is the most objective scale for my simulations ☺️
I can simulate an explosion caused by an earthquake :) trying to keep everything within my main topic :) thanks for the suggestion! I will be doing in the near future
You could tie it in as a gas line explosion after the quake. A good way to increase the education as this comment reminded me I need to be sure I know how to turn off the gas line outside. You could have the EMS sound talking about turning off the gas lines, then BOOM!
Well, above 8 balls most cities will have disastrous destructions and it will be hard to find some help. Medics, firefighters, all services will be in trouble, including their own buildings. While living in concrete panel apartments, I find some hope.

You can set all kinds of parameters in the software actually plus a random seed so it's possible.
