I lived in Birmingham 2016-2020 and went to about 10 pubs featured here. Sad so many have closed in a short sense of time.
I could write anecdote’s about a lot of them but I will say it’s a shame the woodman closed and the Irish centre. Two cracking pubs which were unique and relatively cheap, did good food and had a charisma/atmosphere which you don’t get in many pubs.
I do hope the ruin of a pub in cannon hill gets funding and bought back to life, I use to go past daily when I lived next to the park and always thought it was a sad sight.

Great video. I live in south Birmingham. Some
pubs i recall. Golden Cross between Selly Oak and Harborne, great discos there Thursday nights in the lounge.
    Duke of York, Harborne too.
The California at Barnes Hill near Weoley Castle, later became Whispers and another name I've forgotten. A haunt of Weoley Castle bikers, discos in the lounge.
Best of all was the Stonehouse near Weoley castle and then California area. Fantastic discos in lounge. Was run by Henry and Lil in late 1960s into early 70s. D J was a local kid known as Stevie Dee, he had a polish surname in real life. A fab D J for sure. I recall a mass punch up on the large car park between the then Quinton mob and bikers, the rockers and some hells angels, right shin ding that was, loads of Austin A40 and Austin 1100 police cars arrived, happened in 1970 or 1971, i was near there at time. Fab Ansells pub, was knocked down a few years ago and is a residential area now. There was an old WW2 gun based near side of the Stonehouse too. Had The base of that gun remained for many years, known as big Bertha i believe. Dog racing club in 50s and 60s,whippet racing. 😮
The Woodcock pub near Bangham Pit estate, bordering Bartley Green and Weoley Castle. Good discos there too in the original Davenports pub.
The Raven, Weoley Castle as well, lively place too, discos on Thursday nights which were packed solid, M&B pub, took my now ex there very often.
Some other pubs too that I recall but alas to many to mention.
Great pubs, great atmosphere pubs which has disappeared for good. Great, great days, great pubs indeed.

Thanks for sharing all those memories! It's amazing to hear about the vibrant pub scene back then-discos, characters like Stevie Dee, and even the wild events like the car park punch-up! Sounds like places like the Stonehouse and Raven were at the heart of the community. It's sad how many of these pubs are gone now, but the stories and memories really keep them alive. We’re covering many of these pubs in our series, so keep an eye out! Great days indeed.

Thanks for sharing those memories! You're right, Birmingham's definitely changed a lot over the years. Those old pubs were real landmarks weren't they? Different times for sure. Love hearing stories from people who remember the city's past - it's what makes documenting these places so worthwhile. Keep holding onto those good memories, mate - they're part of our city's story! 🍺🏛️,

I remember when they built the Brookmeadow pub when i was in my early teens and used to use it a few nights a week in the mid eighties and the early nineties until i moved from my Mum's house. It then went rapidly down hill which is such a shame as everyone knew everyone and it was a really friendly place. I also used to go in go in the Harlequin, Packhorse, the Cat and the Coach & Horses - all sadly gone now 🙁

It’s sad to see how many of those beloved pubs have disappeared. We actually cover this in our ongoing series on the lost pubs of Birmingham, including a feature-length video on all of those you mentioned. It’s heartbreaking how places that once brought people together can change so much. Thanks for sharing your memories! 🙁

It’s always sad to see those social hubs disappear! The Cat and Coach & Horses were such important places for the community. It’s a shame they’re gone, but those memories of gathering with friends will always remain. Thanks for sharing your experiences!
