- A vote in New Zealand’s parliament was suspended and two lawmakers ejected on Thursday when Indigenous Maori leaders staged a haka over a controversial proposed law redefining the country’s founding agreement between Māori and the British Crown.

The Māori are not indigenous to NZ. They arrived a few 100 years before the British, colonized it and killed off the previous indigenous people.

Parliament is where all issues are civilly and democratically resolved.
The largest party at a general election forms the official government. The remaining parties form together to become the official opposition. This way means there’s always a equal balance of power. No one entity can outright rule over the others.

I hope for a resolution that will recognize the indigenous people of New Zealand and honor their traditions and lands, giving back what was taken in as fair and equitable of a way, without erasing the true history of the region.
