Wow, loving the response to the video! You guys rock as always. Seeing lots of draw entries below. We will be closing the entries on Friday so get your comment in before then and make sure you are subscribed so you don't miss out!
I wish the internet and your great channel were around when I was building and racing Minis. None in my garage now. Too expensive for my pension money. Love your work. Gear me up HRE.
Gear me up HRE! Probably the best explanation on synchromesh that I have seen so far. I always "kind of" understood what was going on, but never totally (until now!). Maybe you should follow this up with an explanation of the symptoms and root causes of typical malfunctions (e.g. worn synchros, jumping out of gear, baulking going into gear etc.) ?
Gear me up , HRE . These videos are great , keep doing what you are doing. Educate the masses. Also , I have to add that this is currently one of my most favorite channels .
A really good explanation of how syncromesh works ideal basic information for beginners. BMC greatly improved their syncromesh when they adopted the Porche system. I did quite a lot of my early driving on nonsyncro boxes when you had to double declutch. I'm sure that these basic videos are really appreciated by novices. Congratulations on how well the channel is doing and in such a short time.
Gear me up HRE! I’ve recently rebuilt my 3 synchro gearbox from my 65 Riley Elf, had to replace the lay shaft and first gear hub as the teeth were worn out! Great vid, thanks.
Gear me up HRE. Very helpful. I always wondered how that worked and whoever came up with that was very clever. I've noticed when shifting gently/slowly (not necessarily a mini) that I hear things spin up and then the lever drops into gear. Now I understand why. Thanks again for the great content.
Gear me up HRE another excellent video Paul, very well presented and very easy to follow. I have been following your channel for some time now and am thoroughly enjoying it. I'm already looking forward to the next video.
GEAR ME UP HRE!! Another excellent video Paul, I did my first gearbox rebuild just before Xmas last year and learned so much from it, mostly that they can be expensive! 🤣👍
Gear me up HRE. Another great and educational video. Details made simple and easy to understand. "Beam me up, Scotty" (sorry could not help myself...:-) )
Gear me up HRE, Super simple explanation of something that seems a bit of black magic. Be cool to see differences between 3 Syncro gearbox and a 4 Syncro gearbox
I'd say the thing that keeps the gears meshed is that angle in the dogteeth _and_ those detents. One gearbox I had in my Mini had bad detents (either broken or missing) on second gear, and it would stay in mesh perfectly - until I backed off the throttle, at which point the angle was _exactly wrong_ and the car would pop out of gear and into neutral. I was so happy when I finally got rid of that 'box. :-)
Gear me up HRL - fantastic work sir - I often have conversations with chums of mine about synchro and I find it hard to explain - now all I need to do is send them to this video - great work chaps and keep up the good work - oh and a follow up video on dog gears would be amazing :)
Gear me up HRE IRL! Paul, just thought I'd comment that I am not that interested in Mini's really, although I fully understand the following those little cars have. However, I just love your videos, because I am really interested in all the engineering you carry out so superbly. Best of luck with the channel.
This video was Very Interesting and well made. i have seen a video about this it was from 1936 From General Motors its awesome to see the same just remade and explained very well. Thumbs up from me ^^ Gear me up HRE
Awesome. I think I understand it now. Looks like I need Gearing Up HRE! (Not interested in the draw but thanks anyway) I really enjoyed your presentation style. A little over my head, but then I'm not into gear box maintenance - I am just curious about mechanisms.
Gear me up HRE. Perfect explanation. 👌🏻. What's your take on 5spd gearboxes, and at what power (or torque I suppose more specifically), do gearbox components need upgrading. 👍🏻 Thanks
gear me up HRE - what in the best way you have found to stop the detents' ball bearings flying over the garage when removing the gears and then keeping them in place during assembly? can you tell I have worked on gearboxes.
Gear me up HRE. Great explanation Paul, love the channel. Could you explain why sometimes you get a crunch shifting into certain gears but only on quick shifts please? Or maybe just a bit on why gearboxes crunch in general! Cheers 👍
Thanks for the video :) It's a shame I can't easily "stop by" at your workshop too, but it's a bit far from middle of the Europe :) But I would be proud to propagate you with you tshirt, if you will "gear me up, HRE" ;)
Wow only 42 comments so far. Gear Me Up HRE. It was hard to see your explanation, but I fool with this stuff and understand it. Double clutching was easy anyway.
Am I correct to say that when you get a crunch into 1st gear, its the Baulkring (is that how you spell it?) that is not matching the speed to the output, so when the dog teeth try to engage they crunch together??🤔

Gear me up HRE, Great video once again , the engineer who figured out synchromesh must have been a pretty smart cookie. lol
Gear me up HRE! I’ve recently rebuilt my 3 synchro gearbox from my 65 Riley Elf, had to replace the lay shaft and first gear hub as the teeth were worn out! Great vid, thanks.

Thanks for the video gearing me up HRE with this info! Not as scary when you know how it works
gear me up HRE. Who was the clever bugger that invented synchro?
Hi David, that would have been Earl A. Thompson in the 1900’s
Hear me up HRE. You do some great helpful videos

Great explanation! Would really like for you to gear me up HRE! Cheers!
