Kids today wouldn't get it, but we had this song on 45. My Dad loved it & it was played often in our home...along with Johnny Horton's Battle of New Orleans & Marty Robbins El Paso. In the late 70's & 80's my Dad added the Charlie Daniels hits Uneasy Rider & Devil Went Down to Georgia & Kenny Rogers's The Gambler to his list of favorites. I can still remember him telling me, "The best songs will tell you a story that you can't ever forget." Dad...you've been gone 31 yrs now but I'll never forget the devoted & loving family man that you were. You sacrificed a LOT for us & I hope that I've grown to be a person that can make you proud.

    I beg your pardon
I never promised you a rose garden
    Along with the sunshine
There's gotta be a little rain some time
When you take you gotta give so live and let live
    Or let go oh-whoa-whoa-whoa
    I beg your pardon
I never promised you a rose garden
I could promise you things like big diamond rings
But you don't find roses growin' on stalks of clover
So you better think it over
Well if sweet-talkin' you could make it come true
I would give you the world right now on a silver platter
    But what would it matter
So smile for a while and let's be jolly
    Love shouldn't be so melancholy
Come along and share the good times while we can
    I beg your pardon
I never promised you a rose garden
    Along with the sunshine
There's gotta be a little rain some time
    I beg your pardon
I never promised you a rose garden
I could sing you a tune and promise you the moon
But if that's what it takes to hold you
I'd just as soon let you go
But there's one thing I want you to know
You better look before you leap, still waters run deep
And there won't always be someone there to pull you out
And you know what I'm talkin' about
So smile for a while and let's be jolly
    Love shouldn't be so melancholy
Come along and share the good times while we can
    I beg your pardon
I never promised you a rose garden
    Along with the sunshine
There's gotta be a little rain some time

I love and hate this song all at the same time. Back in 1971, we were driving to San Diego for dad to ship out for his fourth tour in Vietnam. (He was a career Marine officer, infantry.) We were singing it--dad had one of the first 8-tracks and he played this song over and over. It was still playing when we pulled up to the pier. He turned to me and said, "Son, I love you." Those were the last words my father ever spoke to me. He was killed shortly after he arrived in country. Every time I hear this song, I think about dad and the last time I saw him.

Kim Barnes Thank you, Ms. Barnes. There is not a day that passes in which I don't think of him. He was so kind and gentle towards his family, and yet, he was devilishly ferocious on the battlefield. But what he did the day he died does not surprise me: he called artillery fire and airstrikes on his own position to prevent his unit from being overrun. He gave his life for those whom he loved: his Marines. Thank you for your sentiment.

I was in 'the Nam' from 1966 - 1969. Returning home and attending university was like a dream come true. Despite earning a PhD in mathematical physics and embarking on a teaching career, I still felt alienated and had trouble feeling anything at all. Those carefree, fun years from the late 70s up through late 80s allowed me to somehow insulate myself from memories, thoughts and feelings that I was better off suppressing. Unfortunately, if one doesn't deal with the past, it will eventually deal with you. The days of attending concerts, smoking weed and having access to a variety of soothing pharmaceuticals somehow led to using heroin to completely numb myself by 1991. I had no idea that I was suffering from severe PTSD. Guilt, shame, fear and horrible memories made my life a nightmare. Fortunately, a special woman who understood PTSD and had lost her brother, a Nam vet, to suicide confronted me with what I had become. The road back to myself involved facing the truth of the losses, survivor's guilt, terror and loss of innocence. It's a long story, but I DID get better. Methadone was an important step, as well as sharing the hell that we experienced in Nam with those who had been there, too. Now, I see the sun rising, the moon, the sheer beauty of nature and had courage to love and believe in others. There IS good in the world.
      I served with 173rd Airborne Brigade/74th Infantry Detachment/LRRP

You're right, she's the one who took country music to a much wider audience because she appealed to mainstream music listeners. Her music was more country-pop than say, Loretta Lynn or Tammy Wynette who appealed mostly to only country music fans. That's why Lynn Anderson was on variety and talk shows you wouldn't normally see country stars back in the '70s.

It went No.1 around the world. She was a country singer though and had over 60 TOP-40 country hits - 7 of them reached the No.1 spot. RIP Lynn Anderson.
    I beg your pardon
I never promised you a rose garden
    Along with the sunshine
There's gotta be a little rain some time
When you take you gotta give so live and let live
    Or let go oh-whoa-whoa-whoa
    I beg your pardon
I never promised you a rose garden
I could promise you things like big diamond rings
But you don't find roses growin' on stalks of clover
So you better think it over
Well if sweet-talkin' you could make it come true
I would give you the world right now on a silver platter
    But what would it matter
So smile for a while and let's be jolly
    Love shouldn't be so melancholy
Come along and share the good times while we can
    I beg your pardon
I never promised you a rose garden
    Along with the sunshine
There's gotta be a little rain some time
    I beg your pardon
I never promised you a rose garden
I could sing you a tune and promise you the moon
But if that's what it takes to hold you
I'd just as soon let you go
But there's one thing I want you to know
You better look before you leap, still waters run deep
And there won't always be someone there to pull you out
And you know what I'm talkin' about
So smile for a while and let's be jolly
    Love shouldn't be so melancholy
Come along and share the good times while we can
    I beg your pardon
I never promised you a rose garden
    Along with the sunshine
There's gotta be a little rain some time

This was the Marine Corp's recruit song in the 1970s that had the title on a recruitment poster ”I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden". The poster was in black and white showing a 6'-4" Marine recruit looking straight ahead and sheepishly while this 5'-8" Marine DI is looking up at him and chewing him out.
That poster is priceless. If anyone should run across it, save it !

    • @clapolla

I have the poster. It reads "We Don't Promise You a Rose Garden" .... with the drill sergeant looking down at the recruit, chewing him out, as you said. They used that poster for the entire '70s and into the early '80s.

I was told, though, I will confess, so for me the odd area was her laugh line under her nose and around her cheeks.
to be honest, though, really mind her looks, that and it was probably due to her habits, as opposed to her chin, or her natural looks?
I was told she used to smoke, It was more obvious as her voice started to change by 1979-1983, plus I was also told that she drank allot too, unfortunately there is clear evidence to support this claim.

I was at a single’s dance at the Blanford Recreation Center and this song was playing. Pouring rain outside. It was such a good time, we had liquor and bologna sandwiches and I was there with all my friends. Good times.

Que voz maravilhosa, que melodia, coisas que não vemos mais hoje. Impossível não se emocionar ouvindo esse hino de uma época de inocência e coisas boas

Thank goodness for my lyft driver who had this on, during my vacation. Now i’ll always remember the moment this was silently on as we drove through ann arbor.

It's only when you look back at these clips that you realise just how innocent it was back then? And i mean that in a GOOD way, things have gone seriously haywire since those days.

My grandmother used to play this every Saturday when she was washing dishes and cleaning around the house. Now in my 30s, I’m so grateful to have this song and this memory.
