Injured sea lion pup desperate for help jumps onto boat in California

- This is the heartbreaking moment an injured sea lion nicknamed Amber swims straight up to boat off the Californian coast in seek of urgent help.
The sea lion, which had apparently been attacked by something in the water and was starving, was filmed swimming up to and jumping onto a boat near Laguna Beach in Orange County.
“Amber swam directly for our boat and came aboard without hesitation.
“If she bites, there is a chance of bacteria (or) disease but she was as friendly as a stray dog. She was desperate,” says filmer Hugo Zusho.
Zusho and his friends on the boat took Amber straight to the Pacific Marine Mammal Centre in Laguna Beach to get her the help she needed.
The incident was captured in 2014 but only emerged online in 2018.

You know you are truly blessed when a wild animal will trust you with its life.
Oh, it’s the coolest honor!! There was a wild female mallard at a pond where we walked. She was always getting into various scrapes, and she’d come with her two buddies to find us to help get her out. My husband once jumped off the boardwalk into the mud to scoop her up and used nail clippers to free her from fishing line and a stick in one wing. She sat in his arms patiently then quacked thanks as she went to her friends. Even when she was not in any sort of trouble, she and her friends would seek us out and walk part of the way around the pond with us… And our two large dogs. She wasn’t afraid of any of us.
Sadly, they did not respond in kind...its not a freak, it's a precious being with a soul.
@@5DNRG not sure if you read the description Barbara, but they didn't get too close bc the pup was still a wild animal, with possible diseases or bacteria. They did end up taking the pup to a rescue center.

@Ocasional Visitor the sea lion is the one to deprive whatever attacking it of a snack. Can't fault the pup for saving itself and climbing onto a nearby boat.
The older I get the more I realize that animals deserve respect and empathy. We are all in this world together and want to live to see another day.
I knew it from being a toddler but it is good in some way that you start to realize that
Actually when you were a child, you understood that even more. We all did. But as we come of age, the environment and the adults around us force us to change and get desensitized, and tragically abandon our otherwise built in empathy.
They're also a source of food for other animals so don't start with the usual vegetarian crapola.

I've seen a video of a mother goose going to humans for help (whom also happened to be police officers) when her goslings got tangled in fishing line or something like that. Never once showed distrust of the humans and was perfectly willing to let them get near her babies.
It's uncanny how even wild animals can sometimes realize that if they are in trouble, humans can help them (and on other occasions, the reverse is also true, like how three *lions* once chased off would-be kidnappers and then sat for hours with the girl that they were trying to kidnap until help arrived....or the multiple stories of dolphins or whales coming to the aid of humans whom are in danger of drowning).
I once helped to save a little bird that had gotten it's neck tangled in fishing line from a fishing rod in our neighbor's backyard, I immediately went to my dad (who just happened to be talking to said neighbor at the time) and the three of us went to the little bird and very carefully went about cutting the poor thing free, and our neighbor then immediately took the fishing rods and stored them in his shed to avoid the chance of the same thing happening.

@Phelan wild animals are cautious afraid of danger but if they're depending on a different species that is a possible threat for help then they must really need help. For example, humans dont need dogs but for others, they have issues or things that requires a service dog.

How does an ocean animal suffer from dehydration? I thought they drink seawater and have ways to pump the salt out.
@@weldenbringhurst6517 Pinnipeds like sea lions get most of their water from the fish they eat, and from fresh-water sources on land. They only rarely drink sea water, and some species are not known to do it at all. If a sea lion pup is malnourished it is also likely to be dehydrated.

They have other options: sea-dwelling mammals can get water through their food (example, the moist fleshy meat from fish), and they can produce it internally from the metabolic breakdown of food (water is one of the by-products of carbohydrate and fat metabolism). Considering this seal was malnourished, she was not obtaining proper amounts of hydration from food sources.

I think its more likely that the pup needed to get out of the water because it was too injured to swim much longer. I doubt if a baby sea lion would "know" that humans are helpful. Anyway, for most of history humans have slaughtered animals, not helped them.

I'm very glad you were there to help as Amber's condition was really bad. Thin and weakened so
would have died from either starvation or infection (weakened immune due to starving and stress)

Their ability to figure out how to use a ladder without probably ever using one before just shows how intelligent of an animal they are.
Not really, figuring out obstacles is something 99% of land faring animals and creatures can do easily... the fact he climbed the ladder isnt any more impressive than if it were to climb a rock
Bravo- They did a great job, it had to be so tempting to want to reach out and pull the sea lion up... I pray Amber made a full recovery.
