- THE POCKET ROCKET IS BACK!! Welcome back to RBR guys and today we are finally driving the New A45 S on the road!! It’s been an awesome build up on RBR with first the drifting preview in Sweden and then engine production in affalterbach leading to now the road review of what AMG are calling the super sports cars of the compact class!

So let’s do things the RBR way and start from the beginning! Back in 2013 AMG did the unprecedented and entered the hotly contested hot hatch market, with a small 2 cylinder turbo 350ish BHP all wheel drive A45. Despite initial fears, the original proved itself one of the most accessible, fun and loud AMGs. Quickly it became a leader in the compact class and the horsepower wars insued with Audi’s RS3, and BMW sitting pretty on their untouchable M2.
AMG proved that this mix of small turbo engine with their signature big engine character, and flagship styling was super attractive to customers! The facelift built upon this raising power and adding a diff to the front.
In the new gen A Class, a much more grown up car inside and out, the first AMG to come was of course the A35. Essentially nigh identical to the previous a45 in its format, with a 4 pot turbo, haldex all wheel drive system bused to the front, the same brakes and thus a shared driving feel.
BUT where does that leave the A45S?
Well it’s a totally new beast in every single regard - It’s got a new M139 4 cylinder engine with 421 BHP in the S, A New 8 speed gearbox, more rigidity, new suspension, Unique body size BUT most importantly: a new 4 wheel drive 4matic+ system completely different to before! Allowing drift mode like the E63 S and GT.
But has it made a big enough difference? Do you feel the power, and how have regulations effected sound? And is it still useable daily!?

Only downside is the sound is now quite thanks to the EU. A remap and exhaust mod will be needed for all of them ! Incredible performance though.
It does sound like an old standard EVO 4-5-6 or Delta Integrale now, a more natural 4 cylinder sound.

When you remind that the M177/M178 V8 was two 4 cylinders M133 merged together...
We can easily imagine a new generation V8 created from two new 4 cylinders M139 merged together who will be unveiled inside the next generation AMG GT coupe and roadster and AMG SL.

Previous A45 definitely sounded better. Just needs an aftermarket exhaust and/or ECU remap for the pops/crackles. Otherwise a fantastic car 🔥
Daniel Sadjadian does the ECU remap actually works for pops/crackles exactly like the previous A45 OR Aftermarket Exhaust because I know how AMG Exhaust sounds
@@babatopeogunmoyero9515 depends who does the ECU remap. I'd imagine companies like Brabus and Renntech will be able to refine the pops/crackles so it sounds like OEM+. But there are a lot of aftermarket tuning companies that go overboard with their ECU maps and end up making the car sound like a riced up Civic lol. Stick with the big German tuning companies and you'll be fine in my opinion.

Daniel Sadjadian remap will not help coz there is OPF installed. You should to remove it also from an exhaust.

Years ago, when I worked in the City, I forsook Porsches, Ferraris and their ilk, to have one of the first 50 Integrales to come into the UK. Just when I’d ordered a 16V, I was made redundant. Later, I bought a second hand Inetgrale Evo, but I sold it for a more practical car. (I won’t say what it was, because it was embarrassing). I’d love to see you compare the greatest, most successful Rally car (in terms of WRCs and race wins) of all time, go head to head with the AMG 45S. You must know someone who has one! Come on make the video!

At first I was disappointed when hearing the reviews of this sound, but hearing you 'play' the exhaust has shown that at least there's something to work with. If the engine is as strong as everyone is saying, all it needs is a tune to make it a monster - something I have no doubt we will be seeing. Having a 1.6 tonne car with 'only' 420hp has shown you don't need the craziest power figure to have fun - something which, with 4Matic+ and hybridisation, might well usher in an all-new era of AMGs.
At this point it would be a dream come true to see AMG develop an all-new 4.0 V8 based on two of these engines strapped together... With eleven years to go before the demise of internal combustion, it's something that's actually possible. To make the last shout of the petrolhead as glorious as possible...

AMG is always been like that... all models are the same pretty much.. and if they have dual tips they are not connected to the fancy looking exhaust
It’s great seeing AMG fans attempting to justify the sound of this car. It sounds like a Fiesta ST with artificial pops and bangs added.

You should be happy, because i think you have the 2018 model or 2019 and the interiour is amazing compared to other cars , i want to buy the a250 but its little bit expensive unless i sell my bike

Great review as always. Regarding the car, the sound is a massive let down and u keep saying that u can always go aftermarket. The problem with that is that with the new laws, aftermarket exhausts can't be lauder than the stock ones... That sound feeling is a big part of a sports car experience and destroying it means that part of the fun is being lost.
I wish they could have fitted a lightweight 6 cylinder beast in this thing . I used to own a 2017 45. the 4 cylinder sounds great but a 6 would have more torque .

I have the new 2018 A250 with AMG Line (FWD). It’s a damn fast, fun and exciting car.
I can only imagine how badass the A35 AMG is.

Drift mode, track mode, suspension to break your spine. What’s the point? At the end of the day it’s a fast little hatchback which after about a month most will think what on earth did I buy this for.

Why don't you use the left paddle shifter for loud start, it also activates it

@@stephentran6874 he didnt. With left paddle during start it will do an emotional start if the engine is warm. It sounds insane
When you think a45, you automatically think of those bangs on the upshift. This car has definitely lost some soul like no jokes mahn...

love your videos, as previously stated, however I have a suggestion...…….when you show a car`s facelift you have a white flash that flashes across the car, showing pre facelift/ post facelift, could you not slow down the feature so it takes perhaps 1-2 seconds so you can clearly see the old model compared to the new.....just a suggestion.

My friend took his a45 2013 to Mercedes as he thinks they put the wrong motor in his as it has 4 cylinders and they said “ you got two engines for the price of one” so now he has put one in the shed for spare incase the other wears out.....

How does steering feels compared to an RS car or an M2, weight and responsiveness. Some AMG cars have little feel and overly light.
Imagine the old A45 with all this new technology, performance and interior.

You may as well save your money and buy a Prius for how quiet it is! You'll spend £45k + extras then have to spend another £2k on an exhaust you can actually hear. Only to realise it just sounds like any other 4 cylinder engine I'll keep my RS3.

Grandpa would be enthused for this little monstre(osity): fake interior wroom wroom noise and quiet exterior, fake drift mode ruining the grip, subpar brakes (and I do believe Chris Harris), yet lagged DCT gearbox... how can they not make one clutch close as other other opens up? You still get torque/pull drop under full acceleration, bumpy ride, shiny plastics everywhere, IC with no lid and full of reflections... 60s style steering wheel, ridiculous turbo badges and aero kit, in a few words a Grandpa's favourite!
BTW: I wonder whether the engine could last as long as the brakes under load...

Fort decades, I always wanted a BMW...but Merc has finally over the last 5 years(?) has shed the "old senior" label and designing edgy tech cars i want over BMW, which I feel ahas stagnated like Audi.
amg indeed has made mercs desirable to people who aren't 60 plus. it was merc for rich OAPs and honda jazz for not so rich OAPs!
@@andyp8464 thst is so true, later designs on the amgs have changed my mind, im in the market for a nissan gtr, audi rs3, 4 or 6, the supra 2020, but finally after looking very very much into them all, consider everything from the starting cost to the maintance to how well the driver feel will be to the engine reliability overal, not only at the start which comes with the hype, but also after a while, and im really into this one hothatch right now, still looking more into it though but im leaning on this one
With the new electronics, is the exhaust configurable in individual mode? Can it be programmed to be open automatically?
great color and nice car but I am not sure the upgrade from A35 to this model is worth the extra cash for me. I would be more than happy in a A35.....
Definitely an improvement from the old a45 amg , but I wonder what this will do against the new Audi RS3

Watching this video has made me wish i could get excited over these modern performance cars with their wide screen tellys and buttons for fart sounds and fake trickery to act like a rwd car. I just want a simple proper drivers car with a manual that doesn't cost the earth with around 250bhp. Hopefully Hyundai brings out a cheap sports car in the near future and takes us back to something more analog..
