Fanie De Villiers was probably the most accurate fast bowler of all time, one who relied purely on line and length along with decent pace. He was equally effective in both Tests as well as ODIs in all situations. Also, he was the best in bowling Cutters both off and leg as well as pin point Yorkers.
One of the greatest moments ever for the game of cricket. The South African boys were amazing. So much better than these poor ones we have nowadays. Thanks Fanie for setting the standard.
"Can south africa pull this out of the hat.this may be their magic act" - Bill Lawry "This is test cricket at its best" - Simon Its actually both the test cricket and the commentary at its best. Absolutely loved the video. This must be one of the best test matches ever.Vintage stuff from De Villiers and Donald . Very high quality bowling rarely seen.Awesome
This should be the best test ever played in '90s and the second best test ever after Ashes win by 1 run in 2005 !! This is no. 1 all-time best ever test for me !!! 😚😚😚😚😚🙏🙏😄😄😊
Being an indian, southafrica was my favourite team that time clearly bcz of their never say die spirit. Each player were so talented & had their unique techniques. What a wonderful high arm bowling style fannie had.
What a test. I was 8 at the time too young to appreciate it but over the years I often heard commentators speak of it. Glad I finally got to see the best moments of this glorious test.
South Africa's exile from international cricket deprived players like Fanie from becoming legends of the game. What a shame he could not represent his country enough in test cricket. He was very economical, wicket taker and match winner on his day
I think australia is the team which had to face so many heartbreaking test match defeats. 1 run loss against west indies, the 2005 Edgbaston test, this match and there are so many more.
This same match brought SA out of oblivion and made Hansie Cronje the Face of SA cricket over the almost next decade. Also, this match maligned Damien martyn's first half of the career and made him wait for another 5 years to find a place in the team! Such a Historic turn of events.
One of best ever test match 😍 Damyn Martin could not play cricket for Australia again for the next 5 years because of playing the wrong shot in this test.
Yeah, I'm from India and I know that plus I remember Tendulkar's confused and dejected look many times when Fannie got him. Me and my mom watched a lot of cricket together. And we both acknowledged his prowess. SA decimated India in those years. Well, I was 17 back then in 1994. T20's killed my interest in cricket. I go on to say it killed cricket itself. Those were the golden days. We loved to watch and feel the thrill regardless of who won. It was always good. Same goes for tennis 🎾. Well, had they not banned SA from sports because of political differences, we'd have seen way more of so many greats, Fannie being right there at the top. I do feel sorry for the players, they're the ones that get caught in the mire of politics. Kepler Wessels played for Australia for some time. Cheers!
Also remember... Fanie de Villiers was the one who whisperedto the camera man in Cape Town to keep an eye on Bancroft in 2018! A true South African legend! 😅 #yellowsandpaper
Damien Martyn's fateful cover drive sent him into the wilderness for 4 years (and out of test cricket for 6). Not sure if that's considered scapegoat material but such is the consequence of a single mistimed cover drive.
Maybe not THE greatest Test of all time, but it's certainly one of my favourites. The only thing that would have made this video better would have been to include more highlights of Jonty Rhodes' 76* in the second dig. Not sure if they're available.
In any form of sport. Success comes with training, having passion and win the game. Play your game not the opositions. Don't look at scoreboard. Don't play the clock. Just play the game. Desire.!!!!!!!!.
Here after the Netflix documentary 'Bad Sport' which has an episode on Hansie Cronje. This game is not featured by Cricket Australia on their RUclips channel. Probably because of Cronje's role in this game.
Poor Damien Martyn got dropped from this almost got dropped from state cricket what a scape goat, 11 other people and none of the senior batsman stood up, this should be a reminder of how not to blood young talent. and now with have marsh bros who get rewarded for poor performance
In fairness to the Australian selectors Damien Martin at the time was averaging around the same average as the Marsh brothers, and dropping Damien Martin after this test match made him a better player in the long run.
Being a die-hard '90s cricket fan, I'd love to share my best ODI World 11 of 1990s and early 2000s versus the West Indies of '90s. ODI World 11 - 1. Sachin 2. Jayasuriya 3. Kallis 4. Ponting 5. Gilchrist 6. Damien Martyn 7. Bevan 8. Warne 9. Wasim Akram 10. McGrath 11. Fannie DeVilliers [ With Dravid (at 5), Afridi (at 6), Saqlain, Muralitharan, Vettori (each of previous three at 8) and Bond (at 11) as replacements ] I hope this is pretty much an invincible 11 even against '90s Windies team. All dear readers, do reply your best ODI World 11 of '90s decade.
For ODI : 1. Jayasuriya 2. Gilchrist 3. Sachin 4. Lara 5. Ponting 6. Kallis 7. Afridi 8. Akram 9. Waqar 10. McGrath 11. @@outlawrip-offartist4161 nothing weird about that at all. Placing the blame on one young player when the other 10 players did sweet fuck all. Then him being exiled from the Australian team for another 6 years. Cricket Australia just as fucked up as ever.
I remember this like it was yesterday. In 2025 where are the Fanie's and Allan's these days? Those bowlers who can bowl leg cutters, swing the ball late, angle in devastating yorkers. Bowling has lost its magic thanks to smash and grab cricket.
A low scoring target n winning it by 5 runs, Wat a team south africa was. A strong unbearable n 👌 Hansi cronje captian leading his troops. We miss him ❤

Defending 117 and still winning by 5 runs against Aus ! Amongst my favourite Test of all time
Woke up at 2am to watch us win this. One of my happiest memories :) Thanks for the video.
Adriaan du Toit This is on TV right now!
The days when teat cricket had real players not the Gucci wearing fools now

Greatest ever test match. Like the 438 game in ODIs.

BRAIN LARA 153 NOT OUT
The best of all time. I agree
Being an indian, southafrica was my favourite team that time clearly bcz of their never say die spirit. Each player were so talented & had their unique techniques. What a wonderful high arm bowling style fannie had.
One of the great test matches. A watershed for SA at the time. New back into international cricket, this was a hell of an achievement in Aus.
What a test. I was 8 at the time too young to appreciate it but over the years I often heard commentators speak of it. Glad I finally got to see the best moments of this glorious test.
Kids from that era could mimic all the bowling actions. Fanie's was one of my favourites.
Mine was Donald lol - great memories.
I love vintage cricket.
I watched every ball of this game proudly south African
The greatest test match ive watched since sa readmission , great showing from donald and devilliers and a good all round team effort from sa.
South Africa's exile from international cricket deprived players like Fanie from becoming legends of the game. What a shame he could not represent his country enough in test cricket. He was very economical, wicket taker and match winner on his day
Tendulkars nightmare
He's still a legend for us South African.
Yeah, even when fit didnt always find favour with his captain for some reason ..
@@moathunter5504 probably didn't want to take the 'money'.
One of the greatest test matches. It's a top 5 for me, for sure.

Wow ...one of the best .. timeless test match, even though SA Won.Never bored of watching this time and time

I think australia is the team which had to face so many heartbreaking test match defeats. 1 run loss against west indies, the 2005 Edgbaston test, this match and there are so many more.
SA have been the best performers in Aus since their comeback. No other team has given Aus such a run for their money as SA has
This same match brought SA out of oblivion and made Hansie Cronje the Face of SA cricket over the almost next decade. Also, this match maligned Damien martyn's first half of the career and made him wait for another 5 years to find a place in the team! Such a Historic turn of events.
The day Hansie and Fanie became legends. Alan Donald helped too but he almost dropped the match there too.
Amazing to find this video. I was there that morning. Far from the only unbelievable finish to a test I've seen at the SCG.
One of best ever test match 😍
Damyn Martin could not play cricket for Australia again for the next 5 years because of playing the wrong shot in this test.
Actually this one of the best Test Matches that I have seen 28 years later 😬
Got to love Fanie's cowboy impression at the fall of each wicket :)
After that shot, Damien Martyn did not play test cricket for Australia 🇦🇺 for the next 6 years!
What a competitor Fanie was, I remember him bowling six outswingers in an ODI to Jadeja, who couldn't lay his bat on a single ball

When protias came to India in 1996, we use to do bowling action. what a bowing !
Fanie devilliers is deadly bowler in 90s, unfortunately he didn't had long career.
This is wow!!!
My uncle, my cousin, and I were doing the Fanie in our underwear at 2am.
This Is Test Cricket at it's best
That cover drive cost Damien Martyn six years in Test cricket.
Seems an utter travesty now. I honestly haven't found a more enjoyable batsman to watch on youtube than Martyn.
@@chapmcchap2919 same here.

Today's people will not know the importance of this match. See how target was defended of 117 runs.

With Allan border and both the waugh brothers
Cricinfo rates this 6/43 as the best bowling performance in the history of tests

Alan Border letting one go, into his stumps. That's where the game was decided.

I think to be fair Steve Waugh was coming back after this so they didn't need Martyn anymore at that stage..
In fairness to the Australian selectors Damien Martin at the time was averaging around the same average as the Marsh brothers, and dropping Damien Martin after this test match made him a better player in the long run.

Definitely not Damien Martyn's finest day - ran out Warne and that stupid cover drive cost them the game.

Damien Martyn was dropped for playing the shot he got out to in the 2nd innings. He wasn't picked again until 1999/2000
Are those stumps made of iron?

Chasing 117. What a collapse. Never ever give up sports people. It's never over till the referee or umpire says it's over.
