Love watching your videos. I like just the ambient sounds and no unnecessary music or talking. The subtitles are perfect. I don’t sleep much due to chronic pain so these videos are always a welcome when I see them in the middle of the night in the US. Are you going to do some Nordic Gold again soon?
If anyone was wondering that gel looking stuff he played around with is called seal-gard it’s designed to seal sensitive electronics dirt and moisture so that component is most likely the control center of the whole thing
Looked like a three-phase SCR/triac to me, which would be used for high-current AC mains switching and/or phase control. Probably part of a motor speed controller of some manner. The real control center of the thing was probably the big IC on the first circuit board, which was some sort of digital signal processor (DSP) from Texas Instruments.
I was working in the appliance industry when they started putting computer boards in their machines and I'd see that gel all the time on refrigerator boards because the moisture inside refrigerators would take them out. Eventually someone got the bright idea to put the boards on the back of the refrigerators and run the wires through the box.
Got my Dad into watching your videos. We are slowly working through them watching one or two a night. My Dad enjoys your motor melts best because he enjoys the tearing down process of them
Two things I will NEVER get sick of watching: Molten copper freezing in the mold, and hot aluminum tearing like wet cardboard in the crucible. Thank you for providing wonderful shots of both today, bigD.
That aluminum thing with two terminals is a power resistor. Pretty harmless inside. Usually something like sand or similar. For large caps like you had, short the terminals with a piece of scrap metal to make sure theyre discharged.
I hate it when I forget about a steak I left on a shelf behind a storage bin. I do love the way you were so concerned with a sanitary way to lay that steak on the griddle by holding it with plastic,,,,,,right after bathing it in driveway runoff. Love the content - thanks for sharing!
Sorry about the meat wash buddy but it was like nine days out of date and when I opened it up it was very funky and smelt off but after a quick wash it seemed fine and was definitely one of the best steaks I’ve had👊🏻😁
At 28:44 . One of my old dads favourite sayings was "In god we trust... all others strictly cash" . I love the vids with a good teardown of old machinery or electrical stuff. Great work mate.👍
Please never apologize for the "extra long break down." For some of us, that's the best part! My "gun-to-the-head" bet, based on the MASSIVE copper coil, plus TWO cooling fans and that big aluminum radiator, as well as what looked like a couple of hefty capacitors, is you broke down a high-powered transformer or control module, either subordinate to some other industrial process, or a stand-alone rig. You're also either lucky or careful and smart you didn't get hurt. Who knows how long that device had been waiting? Old capacitors have been known to bite. My other guess is you already know how to check for charge with something other than a wet finger.
With the name Grundfos on one component it’s safe to say part of that box design is a pump controller. Likely it did more, but Grundfos is one of the big players in fluid transfer.
The journey to 1000 KGS has been pretty interesting, and rather entertaining. I can only imagine what’s in store when you hit that goal. Here’s to binging your vidis, 🍻 Cheers.

Man you gotta check the connecting pins on those circuit boards. 99% of the time the connection pins on those cuircut boards are made of 24 carrot gold. I dismantled a massive control panel to be scrapped and we got almost a 1/4 lb of gold from the pins.
Very nice 3-phase pump controller. The control board is a Texas Instruments TMS320 24Cx microprocessor with digital signal processing functions, RAM, ROM and some communications I/O. The secondary board also has a smaller microcontroller and the relays and mega 1500uF electrolytic capacitors are expensive - $50 a pop. Great choice to recycle! Not that old either.
Birds love to sing after it rains. I think it's just their way of saying "Hey, storm's over and I'm still here!" Not surprised you had an entire chorus going once the rain had stopped 😂 Love when you disassemble a big thing like this, probably my favorite kind of video of yours 👍

If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say that's a variable frequency drive unit for controlling a motor. Edit: I saw the brand Grundfos. They manufacture pumps (I have several in the boiler room of my house for our heating system), so a VFD sounds likely.
Feckin' Sparky here, and yeah, with caps that big, it pretty much can only be a VFD. Gonna guess the tan-colored module right next to the caps is the IGBT.
Now that you mention it, I think you're right. I just had one replaced on one of the buildings I manage, and it wasn't a small job. The one we put in was about 700 lbs, so this one was pretty small. But VFD is probably likely.
It's a Thermodactyl Biristor. It came out of a Rockwell B-Series Retro-Encabulator. It is essentially Tri-Directional coupler, but the advantage is that it's forward compatible with the latest series turbo encabulators.
Is that the one for the sprung-driven cam axis simul-casting bi-rotary anti-fraggle pins in a tri-motionary configuration to suppress the techno-drivel verbiage of the predecessary encabulators, with the notoriously confounding, at-one-time-ubiquitous limitations manifested by the close proximity of the quadratronic trexlinators when juxtaposed with the primary encabulatory node (i.e. poor-quality encabulation, loud whirring, etc.).
You could always add dilute nitric acid to the silver contacts. The silver in them would go into solution as silver nitrate and and be taken out by adding metallic copper. The copper would replace the silver nitrate in solution and precipitate out and you'd have your silver. The only problem is this method doesn't easily recover the copper used. You'd have to do the same sort of thing again with a more active metal (e.g. Aluminium) which would form aluminium nitrate in solution and give you your copper metal back. There may be other ways, but that's the simplest I can think of.
Yeah! That's it! Start with the copper! Brighten up that cold Greater Perthylvanian autumn morn with a little propane fired sunshine! Ain't no redder sunrise!
