Part 2 • Messerschmitt Me262 A1...
Final part of Tamiya's 1/48 scale Messerschmitt Me262 A1-a. Overall an impressive kit, although some seams and mating surfaces along the fuselage were evident which is unusual for Tamiya :/

Thank you,
The Inner Nerd
Brilliant three fantastic videos really enjoyed them and learnt a lot, thank you
OUTSTANDING !!! Great airbrushing skills, you make it look so easy. Fantastic result 👍
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Hi,
thank you very much.
Stay as your are.
So long...
That’s my favorite inner nerd build. A beautiful sight to behold
Thank you and that suprises me! This one is quite an old build now but good to see that it's still good enough to be favourated! Thanks for watching :)
Nice job. And great paint job.
But I must say. I have seen several of your videos now and it just totally amazes, and baffles me why you just refuse to expend as much as $1.50 - $2.00 to purchase a tube of body putty/filler. It really is a shame to see such nice work with all those absolutely horrendous huge seams all over the model.
Gary Cooper Thank you. If you watch part 2 you will see that filler was used to cover the panel gaps/seams. This isn't my strong point though and I do want to improve in this area as I feel it's the only thing that lets my models down
Incredible! Thank you so much for showing what you use.
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
Beyond a hobby, your skill level takes this to the realm of art, absolutely beautiful work. You are a true artist. Thank you for sharing, I appreciate your time.
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
I've been following you for a while now and decided to go back and watch some of your previous videos. Your modeling skills are very impressive. Equally impressive are your videos. Not too long, not too short. Great tips along the way and very pleasing music. Great work, thanks for sharing. P.S. I think your paint job on the ME262 is spot on!! :-)
Great job and awesome videos as always! Please keep them coming. Really enjoying the multi part videos, you have reached the sweet spot between enough detail and length of the video in my opinion. Congrats!
Great model!
Awesome ... painting and weathering looks realy great . Take care .
wow. beat work and yes the videos showing a great mixture of how to and the end result. bloody brilliant
Excellent airbrush control!!! Bravo!
Hallo,
A very nice plane. Well done. I'm impressed. Excellent. Can you tell me what kind of gloss goat did you use for it?
Greetings from Germany.
Bernd Müller Hello and thank you. I use Humbrol Acrylic Gloss Varnish. It is shown in the video at 11:20
I am building this my self and find your post-shading methods and choice of colours to be very helpful:) Thanks.
Thank you and hope your build comes out as you wnat it :) Just for reference - the paints I used turned out to be not actually that accurate to the real aircraft, but if you're not too bothered by that then follow away! Thanks for watching and good luck :)
Amazing build full of great tips and techniques.....a very enjoyable set of videos and the beginning of watching more of your work.....thank you!
Super video and awesome job on the Me262. Great work!
Always nice to watch a Master modeller at work, it’s relaxing to watch too....😎
Excellent work and finale build.
Thank you and thaks for watching :)
@@TheInnerNerd Thank you for your enjoyable video.
beautiful work love the weathering
wow such a joy and pleasure to watch your talented work really enjoyed this beautiful work 👍🏻😊
great work
excellent work on another outstanding model
I recently got a couple of feet away from 2 me262sand one thing i found, whether flying or grounded neither had any visible panel lines as pre shade modellers love to give them. modellers seem preoccupied with the greenhouse finish as seen on one or two B&W photos of the prototype, same with spitfires.
Yes I think the real plane had putty in the panel lines for better aerodynamics. This was at the stage when I didn't know any different and am now not one of those modellers who preshade everything into grid iron. I like to use a shade of panel liner that is only 2 of 3 shades darker than that of the paint scheme, this gives a more subdued effect. Thanks for watching
Great work and good music!
Nice work, your skill amazes me.
Subscribed today. Watched a number of your videos and I'm very impressed. Did you apply the oils directly onto the decals? Or did you apply a protective layer of gloss over them first?
Thank you Ian Sutton. Yes I used 2 layers of protective gloss to seal the decals in. After the wash I also used a single layer of gloss to protect that too
Stunning mate looks amazing
Terrific results. Keep it up.
Dude!!! Seriously, unreal! Love watching your videos man!
Is there a reason why you use gloss varnish first and then finish it with the matte? And have you tried (or would you recommend) other brands for varnish?
Keep these videos coming man. You're quickly becoming my favorite RUclips channel.
Andrew Beech Thank you Andrew. The gloss is required for the decalling process and also helps repel some of the weathering wash so it doesn't stain the model when applied. A final coat of matte is used to achieve the final surface finish taken from reference images & the kit instructions
Build the Model is no so important, but the airbrush part, very interesting. I Love your Videos 🙏🏻
Thank you for the feedback, would you like to see more painting detail vs building then?
Man your airbrush technique is ecellent, I think you over did the washes, less is more still looks great though. I especially like your use of light colours to show new panels
Excellent job and videos!
My issue with all the 1/48 kits, no dropped slats fortunately I purchased several sets from Eagle Editions. Great build I've got get on mine.
F-14 tomcat on the next project eh? Just been outbid on ebay for one of those. Hopefully you can show me what I'm going to miss as I've had to settle for the airfix 1/72 eurofighter. Possibly thinking of the bob scheme. Great videos by the way. And it's great to learn from yourself the Sukhoi is still my favourite though
Chris Sheppard Yeah the Tomcat is underway now! Trying some new techniques on it too, hopefully you guys enjoy the video when it's made!
Typhoon is on my bucket list yet to complete as I was requested by another subscriber to make one at some point ☺ I was thinking of a special paint scheme for it too, but not giving anything away yet 🤐
Sukhoi Su-33 still my favourite too even though I have improved slightly since then. It's all down to that paint scheme!
Beautiful build!
Lovely working time lapse..
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
wonderful!! great job!! really Master piece!! sorry my bad english!!
I've got this same model, only mine's diecast. Yeah, that's right! I used it in my profile pic you can see at the beginning of my comment. I just added it today.
Look at the cover for me262 volume 2 by Creek and Smith. The main landing gear are angled in at six degrees each. Looks cool as can be.
Great series of videos. Really enjoyed them.
Hi very nicely built model I have a small point of criticism, I think the antenna wire is too thick I always use fishing line in 0.2 or 0.3 mm that fits better in terms of scale.
Keep it up
Thank you. Yes this is all I had at the time and instantly realised how thick it looked when I attched it to the model. I now use fishing line myself and have most recently used it on my Spitfire build. Thanks for watching :)
Nice build.
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
Stunning hope mine ends up looking half that good!
Beautiful
There are four options available right now, the me 262 from tamiya, the me262 from revell, the hasegawa 1/48 f-104, the tamiya 1:48 p-47D razorback, and the tamiya 1:48 corsair. I can only get 3 out of the 5 options, but since the tamiya 1:48 me 262 is a bit expensive, i can only get 2 is i get that one
I still have 2 Dragon 262 kits in my stash a night fighter and bomber as well as Aeromaster decals for them. Not as nice as the Tamyia kits, state of the art changes quicker and quicket.
Nice!
yes my friend
What caused the light blue / white mix on the bottom of the plane to crack? Was that intentional?
It's caused by applying the gloss coats too quickly. The clear coats hadn't cured fully before I applied the next coat. As a result the layers shrick at different rates causing the cracks. So no it wasn't intentional unfortunately. Although it's good to know if you do wnat to mak this effect for some reason!
Hello. Great work and technique! Learned so much in your two previous videos and this one.
I noticed you had a little 'accident' in 9:30 when you're painting the nose Red. What happened back then, and how did you correct it?
Greets from the Philippines.
Horrido413 If you are reffering to the overspray of red. I masked off the red section and repsprayed over the grey again
my thanks :-)
what wash did you use? and when cleaning off did you use some sort of thinner or just the dry cloth, great 262, absolutely amazing!!!
The Inner Nerd ah thank you, will definitely check that out, definitely the best modeler on RUclips, your Me 262 is my inspiration for mine own 👍👍
i recently got an airbrush and i was just wondering what psi you use for preshading, postshading, and normal painting
Hello. I use 12psi for regular paint as I find it works best for me. Some others use around 18-22psi but I find that's too high. I have Patreon page where I break down to the absolutely basics everything you'll need to know if you're interested in learning about more techniques 🙂
Very very nice build.
I built many years ago, probably more than I care to mention, a 1/32 of a 262, it had detailed engines and the Rockets under the Wings too....🙄
Great job!
How you make an oil wash? It's only abteilung's oil or oils diluted with somethings?
Adam Nikiforow Thank you. I dilute them with white spirit or turpentine (depends on availability). Mix together until the oil is thin enough to run down the panel lines
Très beau travail, bravo!
Brillante y muy buen trabajo!!
Great job!
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
I know the cracking is untintentional, but on this kind of aircraft it actually creates a really nice effect, the real ones wouldve been rushed into service and abused until the end of the war, the paint would definitely have started cracking on it, and the luftwaffe wouldnt fix it, why bother taking such a valuable airplane out of service for its colour?
SmokingSpitfire Finally someone who isn't picking fault with the paintwork!! When I saw it cracking I stuck with it because I thought it added more depth to the model. People dont seem to agree with that but and the end if the day its a hobby not a job for me. Take it seriously enough to do a good job but actually enjoy it too!
The Inner Nerd Everyone picks a fault with each others modellers. At the end of the day you're more talented than most of us could hope to be. And its your plane. I was just adding my two cents because people don't realise these weren't built in high tech factories. They were cobbled together in forests very quickly, rushed in painting, and sent to front line squadrons.
The Inner Nerd well I'm going to start building and painting and I know and the so called Experts here would love to judge my work.you know what when they started out I bet that the work they did was horrific but hey you got to start somewhere you know..you inspired me to start and I really appreciate that...please keep the vids coming they really help..
What type of airbrush do you use, with what size needle? Do you thin Tamiya with their lacquer thinner or X-20 (acrylic thinner)? Thanks for presenting this. I really enjoyed it. 🙂
Messer109 I use a Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline with 0.15mm needle/nozzle. 22psi and thinned with X-20A
The Inner Nerd that's amazingly small. I use a .18 mm. Do you deal with much tip-dry or clogging with such a small needle or do you add some kind of flow-aid or retarder? I'll give Tamiya a try, after seeing how easily (it seemed) you were able to spray it. Glad I watched. 🙂
Messer109 Yes I have no problems at all. Paint is suitably thinned to flow through but I dont use any other additives like retarder etc. I do have problems with other brands like Hataka and Vallejo. Must be my setup as others swear by those brands
The Inner Nerd
Thanks for your quick and informative replies!
I thin down Tamiya acrylics with a mixture of distilled water and industrial 100% isopropyl alcohol. 3:1 You can clean your airbrush with this also.
Hey! I'm new to model building and someone gave me this model. I've watched your videos but don't really know where to begin.
What's the most important paint colours that I'd need from the list? Getting all gets a bit expensive. Can I paint it by hand instead of an airbrush? How do I go about doing that?
What other tools and products would I need?
Hello and sorry for the delayed reply. I have a video coming out soon that will cover all of your questions and basic skills of model making. I hope that can help you out :)
What color do you use to do the mottling effect?
The colours are actually wrong on this model. It should be RLM 74 Grey-Green and RLM 75 Grey-Violet with RLM 76 Light Blue on the undersurfaces.
Just watched all the builds for this one, awesome work… just a quick one, when using abteilung, what do you thin the abteilung with and wipe it down with? Also do you too coat clear it after?
Many thanks and keep up the great work! 👍🏻
I thin the oils down with white spirit (turpentine will also work). I use this to thin and wipe the oils when using the overall wash technique. I did clear coat it afterwards to seal it in with acrylic varnish. I better video for weathering is my latest on the Bf109 here ruclips.net/video/QnAjS0o_DKQ/видео.html. Thank you and thanks for watching :)
@@TheInnerNerd thank you so much for the advice. Still learning on this technique…. Will have a look and thank you once again 🙌
Mmmmhhh...me estás engañando !!! 😊😊
The model looks great but the antennae is out of scale. Too large.
Thank you and yes, in this moment of my modelling career I hadn't got anything to scale. Now I use fishing line for rigging and antennas. Thanks for watching :)
Super, like.
I noticed that the entire model is covered with cracks, what is the reason?
Gastello100 I think I didn't leave enough drying time when building the layers of varnish. The under layer was not fully dry when putting on the next and the diffenent curing times caused them
You did very nice job man! Just one but at first look visible flaw - the antenna is not strait what, its concave - supported by vertical its own vertical part. What's little bit wierd. But at all nice work, love your videos.
Thank you. And yes This was my first attempt at recreating an antenna wire and got it out of scale too using the stretched sprue. Oh well I knew for next time to use fishing wire or something similarly thin. Thanks for watching
This one of my favourite build of yours. Great work!!
Just wondered...what do you use to thin your abteilung oils?
I use white spirit but turpentine works also
WOW NICE WORK.......just cant imagine this German planes against US aircraft no chance...
Magnificent
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
Without mixing paints and I also use a brush what would the colours be for the outer shell camo and under belly
I would use AK Real colours since they have specific colour matched paint. The paints for this camouflage are RLM74, 75, 76 and RLM23 which are all available in set for AK here ak-interactive.com/product/luftwaffe-fighter-colors-1941-1944/ Hope this helps and thanks for watching :)
Impressive! Somehow I need to choose a 262 model. Do any come with individual flaps?!
Thank you. And no this on e has fixed flaps but can be cut away and scratch built to make folded ones?
David, teu 262 ficou estupendo, mas a antena teria de ficar mais fininha. Aqui no Brasil, uso um produto vendido em lojinhas de armarinhos chamado de bigode de gato. Abraços.
Hi there. I'm not David, I'm The Inner Nerd. And thank you, I now use thinner thread for a more accurate scale for the antenna. This was the first time I'd tried to replicate an antenna so wasn't sure what to use
Looks like fun
Yes it is! I find modelling helps get rid of everything that going on around me and takes me to a place where only what's happening in that moment counts. It's a good way of winding down and expressing my creative side into something I have made. Thanks fore watching :)
Well done, nice Job! The cracks in the clear coat are really annoying.
Freakazoid aka Ben Thank you. Can't seem to fix this as the layers of varnish that make it occur are needed for the decalling & weathering process. Suppose in a way it adds to the worn effects though
I just told you that the antenna wire is very thick.
WOW
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
I wish the plane would have flown to see its capabilities. Otherwise great job.
Looks awesome! Did exactly the same kit and chose the same scheme a few weeks back (ruclips.net/video/pklcPTd6Upo/видео.html ) sad I didn't see your differential panel effects on the underside first; would have used it as inspiration! One thing though and I hope you don't take it the wrong way, its only meant as info for another time - all that work that went into the manual adding of beautiful rivet lines... the Me262 was delivered with the rivets carefully puttied over in the factory for a smooth finish - even on ones with no standard paint you can still see the grid lines of the putty. Anyway - overall lovely work, thanks for sharing it!
Ahh I see that's too bad I went to all the work of putting them in then! Oh well good for reference. Thanks for the positive comments though, greatly appreciated and I hope you enjoy my future videos :)
Is this a remote control plane? Because I've been trying to find one.
No I doubt this will fly even if you did put a motor in it. This is just for static display only
Sorry Inner, for my confusion.
You do a good job. Very skillful. Just not a fan of all the oil wash at the end. Plane ends up looking like a big greasy blob.
How do you mix dark grey and red
To be honest you're probably best to buy the correct RLM colour since the colours I used here aren't accurate to the real aircraft as I found out later. The colours I would use for this build now are AK real Colours set RCS031 which contains RLM74,75 & 76 used on Red 13 Me262. Hope this helps and thanks for watching :)
ak-interactive.com/product/luftwaffe-fighter-colors-1941-1944/
What happened to the paint? It looks cracked in some areas.
I layered up the gloss varnish too quickly and the layers underneath weren't dry properly. The rate at which the layers dried was different causing the cracks
what PSI u use for shading
I use 12 psi for most of my painting work, including the shading. The paint thinning is around 70% thinner
With a name like uther I guess he must be related to uncle fritz.?
A lot of these super black panel lines are getting out of control.
This was my phase of doing this until I learned real aircraft don't look like this. I now prefer to use a darkened shade of the camouflage colour just to deepen the lines slightly, like a shadow rather than black line. Thanks for watching! :)
@@TheInnerNerd That’s a great technique. Thank you!
Perfect but the antenna is really too strong...the only defect on this model
Thank you and yes, I should have used fishing wire for it to be more in scale. I think at this point I'd just discovered how to sprue stretch 😄. Thanks for watching :)
@@TheInnerNerd no problem..I have learn a lot of ways to do models
Congratulations from France
Ruined by the tow rope arial!
Wonderful vids though!
Yeah this was before I found fishing line to do the trick... Thanks for watching :)
wow the plastic model is veeeeeeeerrrrryyyyyy haaaaaaarddd hoo
🦅💪
Baddass 262
Thank you and thanks for watching :)
Awful
Uther LightBringer Which areas would you suggest I improve?
The camo, is wrong, thi aircraft was paintend in rlm 81/82/76 scheme witsh soft edged boundaries between colors, you need to check carefully your groutings. Even the antenna wire is too thick...
Uther LightBringer Not sure these 3 things qualify it as "awful" but okay. It's a good job it's not going to a show!
According to Tamiya's painting reference and other references I used my colours are pretty close. Are you sure your tv/device has been colour calibrated? After all they are only images.
As for the faded rather than solid edges on the camo, again you'd have to argue this one out with Tamiya as I followed the paint reference guide from the box
The antenna wire was scratch built and I didn't have the original from the aircraft. Do you know the original thickess so I could make a 1/72 version?
He is just jealous. I think you did a fantastic job! well done!
'Awful' is more than harsh. You do good work and always demonstrate great technique.
www.cybermodeler.com/ is a good site for photo walk-arounds and colour references although not all aircraft are there
