    I really like the 1st point made here. I am a big skeptic of formal education (which may seem ridiculous since I have a PhD), because when the goal of "education" becomes checking a box to get a job, it becomes less effective.
    With that being said, there is NOT a 1:1 mapping between knowing your stuff and having a grad degree. I know people with "just" a BS who know their stuff and people with a MS/PhD that have a lot to learn.

    Brilliant, thanks for sharing, I'm doing job hunting with no grad degree atm. I'm having a 3rd round of interview this week as a machine learning engineer. That should add a bit more concreteness to your claim, I'll keep you updated.

    Tbh I had to get a masters in DS in order to get a junior DS position at an e-Commerce site after years trying to break in to the field. The academic process and translating papers to code and vice versa is a really important skill that I only accrued when writing my Master's thesis. In my opinion, practice alone does not sufficiently prepare an individual to be able to engage with novel, academic literature and apply their findings in an industry setting

    Wanna invent/discover something new? Become a degree holder (Researcher)
    Wanna use already available resources to build something unique or interesting? No need for a degree (Engineer)

    Very insightful. I agree that when getting new people for my team it's much more important if they are able to learn new things than what's their formal education. Yes, it makes the job of HR folks more complex as they can't do an easy pre-filtering, but I believe it's worth it. Btw your product placement was probably the first one ever I may actually use (when a right project comes my way :) ).

    What if you create a project that seems like research but you use it for example in a video game you are making ( practical usage ), for example AI playing against player would that be relevant somehow? If you repeat and build multiple such projects, would that count and be interesting to some employers? Basically buiding cool things that you find interesting and shipping them to players?

    Even in companies there is a scope for research when it comes to innovation. There one cannot ignore the need of scientific approach to new problem solving.

    P(skilled | degree) = P(degree | skilled) P(skilled)/ P(degree), P(degree) is 1 as it is required and P(skilled) is fairly high due to interviews and assessments. Hence skilled given degree and degree given skilled are strongly correlated

    • @jasdeepsinghgrover2470
      @jasdeepsinghgrover2470 Год назад

      On the other hand P(skilled | no degree) = P(no degree | skilled) P(skilled, high because tested) / P( no degree, very high as most candidates belong to this)

    "Needed" is a weird word. Anyone can do ML without even highschool as long as they learnt everything by themselves. An undergrad can be research scientist if he/she is reading and implementing papers.

    Let me just go tell everyone down at Burger King that they don't have to do that and can be a data scientist instead.
