Louis Armstrong sang this in 1953. J None did an amazing job honoring him. Santa Claus was Bucky Buckner in both the gift giving and the outro. Bucky was the drunken sailor in their "Drunken Sailor" video. He also was Geoff's choreographer in "Monster Mash" and the one that suggested he do "Unshaken". He can also featured in their shorts video "I'm Gonna Walk (500 Miles)".
Yes, Layne recorded the whistling but they filmed it as if Cesar had done it. Matthew “Bucky” Buckner provided Santa's hands and Eli was Santa's voice during the song, with Layne playing Santa for the end card. That's J. hitting the highest note in the last chord on "you." By the way, the couch is named Bethany. VoicePlay utilized a robotic camera system (Cinebot Mini), programmed to coordinate with the music and Eli's lighting cues, so the camera shots could be precisely repeated, allowing for the quick editing, shifting the group into different positions. J, actually sings bass for the Sea Chanters, the vocal group for the US Navy Band. 'Zat You, Santa Claus? was written (music and lyrics) by Jack Fox in 1921. It was published in December 1953 by Broude Bros. It was recorded on October 22, 1953 by Louis Armstrong and The Commanders, and released in December 1953 on Decca Records. The song was also covered in later years by such artist as Bing Crosby , Benny Green , Rebecca Kilgore , Buster Poindexter , Harry Connick, Jr. and René Marie (with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and Wynton Marsalis). Garth Brooks performed the song in the film, Just Call Me Santa (2001). VoicePlay recorded it for their Peppermint Winter album in 2012.
Oh wow okay! Thank you so much for the information! I'm definitely gonna have to check out the sea chanters if their stuff is on youtube. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for another VoicePlay reaction to their latest Christmas tune. This is the third time that Layne has arranged this one for VoicePlay over the years. Apparently, performed this live in their pre-pandemic touring days. One of the previous arrangements is on one of their Christmas CDs. Always good to see J. back with the guys. He does a great Louis Armstrong tribute. Originally from the 1950’s, this song isn’t well known but was included in the 2018 “The Grinch” movie. Your first guess was correct, whistling was Layne but Cesar was miming it. That was Layne speaking in the outro too. Layne had a new toy to use for this one...they rented a robotic arm with multiple cameras. Eli had to connect his computer with the lighting cues to the robotic arm’s computer to sync everything up. Always fun with VoicePlay!
The late great Satchmo did this in 1953 and VoicePlay made it so catchy, jazzy and more. Check out the VoicePlay tree-topper! The US Navy moved him from baritone to bass recently. I really think Louis thinks that J None is doing a great job on his music. Santa was Buckey, the drunken sailor.

Thank you for the insight! I didn’t know Bucky was apart of this as well, I loved him in drunken sailor. Thanks for watching!
