  • Oakland Athletics 9 at Boston Red Sox 1, F -- A pitchers duel opened the first game of the ALCS between Oakland and Boston, as 2-time Cy Young Award winner, Roger Clemens faced 20-game winner Dave Stewart. Clemens kept Oakland scoreless for six innings, but Oakland managed to break through against the bullpen, scoring one run in the 7th, and another in 8th, to take the lead. Though only one run behind, the Red Sox saw their hopes of retaliation dashed in the 9th inning when Rickey Henderson led the way to a seven run inning for Oakland. Dennis Eckersley closed it out for the A's, as Oakland took a 1-0 series lead.

      @@dukedematteo1995 there was a big rivalry between the two of them at the time and Stewart was something like 4-0 vs the Red Sox in matchups with Clemens. There was also some personal animosity to it as well. Rumor has it that after one victory Stewart said "see i always beat Clemens so I'm better."

    • @dukedematteo1995
      @dukedematteo1995 4 года назад +3

      @@DonQwantsyou yea I get it... Stewart did do better in matchups. I just watched this game in its entirety. Clemens didn't give up a run, and in Game 4 he was ejected " arguing balls and strikes" aka the ump was acting like an egomaniac. But given it was such a small sample size of their total games pitched, and Clemens was a perennial Cy Young winner every year back then its simply an inaccurate statement. If he was better than Clemens, Stewart would have won all those Cy Youngs and had a sub 2 ERA in the AL. He didn't, Clemens did. He wasn't better than Roger Clemens. The As were great back then, and Oakland is and was a pitcher's paradise.
      Good rivalry tho. Both guys had a fierce intensity about them .....headhunting psycho Clemens and the" look in your eyes while I stab you death glare" Stewart had was great. Definitely a great pitcher and competitor.

    1990 felt like a rerun of sorts of 1988. In both occurrences, the A's flat-out destroyed the Red Sox in the ALCS before losing to a vastly inferior ballclub (the Reds in '90 & the Dodgers in '88) in the World Series. The A's during that era from 1988-1992 was purely a case of unfulfilled potential since they should've won more than just one World Championship.

    It's odd that Dave Stewart never gets any Hall of Fame consideration. He had quite a career. 3 postseason MVP's, 4 straight 20 win seasons. He's not a Hall of Famer, but you'd think someone would make a case for him.

    • @DonQwantsyou

      Doesn't have the numbers. 168 wins. not even a .600 pitcher, although a good big game pitcher. A pitcher needs to be up there near 300 career victories and up there in strikeouts, 1700 Ks, Clemens 4600 Ks, Ryan 5700Ks no comparison., and Clemens not even in HOF ( steroids). Also Clemens 354 victories, Ryan 324 victories and mostly with shitty teams, Stewart not close. Also consider Blyleven, just got in recently, 287 wins, 3700 ks again not close for Stewart.

Look at that year (1990) Bob Welch won 27 games. Stole Roger Clemens Cy Young from him only because the writers got all giddy about 27 wins. Welch 27-6 2.95/ 238 IP 127k and 2.9 war Clemens 21-6 1.93era 228.1 IP 209k's and a 10.4 WAR.. OALAND 103 wins Boston only 88 wins

      If he had more wins postseason MVPs arent the same as other sports it's usually random not a good barometer plus Dave Stewart had a great team and he would have never gotten half his wins with a bad team and not to mention he lost the world series when he was heavily favored with his team and they got swept bad blemish on resume also pitcher is probably the hardest position to get in because they aren't every day players they play one game and then take three or four games off to rest arm regular positions don't get breaks that is why it's even more impressive to be in the hall of fame because your career numbers have to be near perfect in overall career Stewart falls short of that criteria plus he was bad the rest of his career so he had a hot streak also really hard to get in with one title and that is pretty much why he was never considered plus look at the several potential future hall of famers that was on the same team but at a point in time he was one of the better pitchers in baseball for a couple years not his whole career that is why he won't get in it's a career stats thing not the impact you had on big games not quite as important as overall stats when it comes to be inducted they are very picky just look there is only little over 100 players in the hall of fame there has only been 20000 mlb players in the whole history of the mlb some guy recently in his first start became the 20000th player to suit up in a mlb game that says a lot about how hard baseball is and how extremely hard it is to get into the hall of fame

I wonder if Clemens had a problem with a catcher in that position. Did Pena succeed Sanguillen in Pittsburgh?

    Funny to hear "...(Fenway) not conducive to home runs..." & all I can see is Bucky Dent clearing the Green Monster in Game 163 back in 1978. Should've added "...unless you're Bucky Dent..."

      @@stephentrull5233 Thanks. Kind of unusual in that era to see a guy leave so early. Clemens wasn't afraid to say when he thought he was done. McNamara and Clemens always gave different stories about why he was pulled in game 6 of the '86 series. I tend to believe McNamara that Clemens asked to be pulled.

      Clemens was really burned out by Joe Morgan from 1988-1990. In one game in 1988, he threw 161 pitches in 100 degree heat for a complete game win in Texas...not too long after, he went on the DL and was not as effective the remainder of the year. This was before organizations became more serious about pitch counts and so forth. So I think he would tend to simply wear down late in the season and as a result was not "dominant" as he was earlier. Here in 1990, he had just returned from a late season injury to pitch 6 shutout innings on the second-last game of the season and there was actually some uncertainty as to how much he had in the tank for game 1. He certainly pitched well but was not yet in mid-season form and I think they were trying to save him a bit - it's not like he was "asking out". As far as the game 6 controversy, I tend to side more with Clemens over MacNamara. For one, Mac lied about Dave Stapleton being called "Shakey", an assertion that was refuted by Bruce Hurst. He also lied about having his "best first baseman out there", since he had put Stape in for defensive purposes in every other playoff game win. Third, Clemens was actually on deck and was pinch hit by Mac...it's not like Clemens begged out in the middle of the inning. I think Mac had a pretty thin skin in terms of accepting the blame, and resorted to a lot of finger pointing to save face. He shouldn't have had to shoulder all of the blame, but definitely made some questionable decisions in that game 6. I thought Clemens pitched pretty well in the playoffs that year, except for game 1 against Anaheim. He pitched didn't really lay any other eggs in his other postseason starts...I always thought it was a bit odd that he became such a villain to Boston fans. He carried that staff for a number of years.
