This game is legendary. Will Clark's 2nd best performance of all time. Only second to his Major League debut home run off Nolan Ryan. I am so fortunate that I got to see him play. I missed Babe Ruth and only saw him in old highlight films. Not the case with Will Clark. I became a Giants fan as a kid growing up in the mid '80's. Clark was and still is my hero and favorite baseball player. I emulate his mannerisms when I take at bats and project the confident and cocky swagger he had. He should be in the hall of fame simply for what he did for the Giants and the game. Hopefully I will get a chance to meet him in person thank him for inspiring me and giving Giants fans lots or cherished memories. He was indeed a thrill to behold.
Before the NBA on NBC, Marv Albert was the pregame host of the MLB on NBC Game of the Week aka “Major League Baseball...an Inside look” so yeah, many of you are surprised to see him talking about baseball, but remember that after the 1989 season, CBS became the right holders of the MLB, in 1990 NBC got the NBA rights (from CBS) and Marv Albert will get the role of main broadcaster, and his journey to become “The Voice of the NBA in the 90s” began... PD: In historic topics, replacing MLB with the NBA was the beginning of the Golden Era for NBC Sports...sadly the decline began when they lost the NFL in 1998, followed by the loss of MLB (Again) in 2000 and in 2002 the NBA heading to ESPN. and then with the lost of NHL rights in 2021, but at least they the Vin Scully of Soccer Peter Druly to help out with their English Permier League soccer coverage which is fantastic by the way, so all hope is not lost, after all, it was better for the NBC to have two super bowls instead of one in the mid 1990s.

He had a perfect batting swing, which gave inspiration to Adam LaRoche's batting swing. Will was a total team player and he was a great presence on and off the field.

We all know about Will Clark's MVP series, but we all forget how baseball has changed since this series. Today, you see why pitchers and catchers cover their mouths when they have a conference on the mound. This series has a lot to do with that change, because that night when the Thrill went 4-for-4 he was also a good evesdropper. He knew what was coming, because the Thrill was a good lipreader.
Also, this is the game that changed baseball in many ways. Clark knew a fastball was coming on the first pitch after the visit to the mound in the 4th inning. End result, Clark hits the grand slam. Now, you see why the pitchers cover their mouth with their glove from that point onward.
I wish that Vin Scully (the man is in his 80s now and is still going Dodger games at a top level) still did MLB games on a national level (the last time he did so was when he called the 1997 World Series for CBS Radio). Vin brought a ton of credibility and class (Vin has that eloquent way to speaking that raises the professional quality level really highly) to NBC's broadcasts back in the '80s.
I wonder if anybody can upload Game 2 of the 1989 NLCS? That was the game (the only one that the Cubs won in the series) in which NBC had Bob Costas fill-in for Vin Scully (even though Costas was also on assignment for that year's ALCS between Oakland and Toronto), who had laryngitis.
I am a little surprised that NBC didn't use Marv Albert to fill in for Vin in game 2 just to give Bob Costas a rest but Marv not a regular baseball guy.
Too bad no Carrey alongside Scully. This was my team here when I was a kid. Still love the cubs but there was something special about this 1989 team. So many legends.
J Gunn, NBC only did that in the World Series, but was not the network for the 1989 WS as they have to alternate the Fall Classic between NBC and ABC, which carried the '89 Series. It's sad with this NLCS it was the last time for NBC to carry the Playoffs, as CBS won bidding rights for the next several years

This was the end of Vin Scully doing games on NBC. NBC would lose the baseball package to CBS in 1990. And when NBC got baseball back briefly in the mid 90s Bob Costas would be the main play by play man with Bob Uecker and Joe Morgan. End of an era Scully was the best ever.
Anyone notice Don Zimmer visited Maddux twice on the mound?!!! 1st inning and 4th inning. The two mound visit pitcher change rule must be a relatively new rule.
Thomas Austin. Kennedy was smart, he kept his catcher's glove covering his signs to the pitcher so that no one could see them. The Cubs giving away their conversations on the mound set the tone for everyone else to cover their mouths when discussing what pitches to throw to certain batters. Will Clark exploited that, the Cubs paid dearly, and as they say "The rest is history".....
Maddux {who was taller than Zimmer} mouthed the words "Fastball in" during the conference. This is now why all pitchers and catchers cover their mouths when meeting on the mound.
I find it utterly insane that Vin Scully suddenly came down w/ laryngitis shortly after calling Game 1 and thus, couldn't call Game 2 the next day. Hence, NBC getting Bob Costas during an off-day of the ALCS to fill-in.
True story-- at 1:21:33 Will Clark read Maddux's lips at the mound and read "fastball" from Maddux's lips. The very first pitch was a grand slam. To this day, during meetings at the mound, you will see pitchers cover their mouth's with their glove. 1. The Cubs really misfired by not locking up Maddux before he became a free agent. Might've won a World Series by now if they'd kept him. 2. The second inning triple was probably Luis Salazar's career highlight. The lowlight: losing his eye on a line drive to the face. 3. Scully and Seaver are a solid team.
If there was a Cubs team that should've went to the WS, it should've been the 89 team. The Cubs and Giants were evenly matched that year however the Giants came up with the key hits to win the series.
It depresses the hell out of me that NBC won't be able to broadcast MLB for the foreseeable future (they haven't broadcast baseball since Game 6 of the 2000 ALCS, which is now an eternity ago). NBC has always been the "gold standard" (even during the "lean" years of the '90s, when they had the failed Baseball Network and then didn't show regular season games at all) in regards to MLB TV coverage.

Clark,Mitchell and the Giants overall were first pitch hitters. That's how Dave Stewart threw the 5-0 shutout against them in game 1 of the WS.Clark went for the first pitch and popped out to Canseco in game 4 of the WS,slowing down that huge 7th inning Giants rally..Mitchell swung early too.
I just want to see the Grand Slam!
Will the Thrill dominated this series. 84’ Cubs were better than 89’. 2003’ Cubs better than both though
If there was a Cubs team that should've went to the WS, it should've been the 89 team. The Cubs and Giants were evenly matched that year however the Giants came up with the key hits to win the series.
Hopefully history repeats itself this year...
That's a joke- He's my favorite pitcher ever, but he's never been mistaken for a power pitcher.
Great memories
what is the black line that comes across the screen every 30 sec?
1:21:34 shows Will Clark reading the lips of Greg Maddox. He knew a fastball was coming.
Because of this game, now all pitchers cover thier mouths with thier gloves. Thanks Will Clark...master of reading lips.😁

I remember watching this as a White Sox fan, I have to admit the grand slam stung me too. Yikes.
This game was when Greg Maddux had to throw the ball over the plate, instead of around the plate, to get called strikes.
It depresses the hell out of me that NBC won't be able to broadcast MLB for the foreseeable future (they haven't broadcast baseball since Game 6 of the 2000 ALCS, which is now an eternity ago). NBC has always been the "gold standard" (even during the "lean" years of the '90s, when they had the failed Baseball Network and then didn't show regular season games at all) in regards to MLB TV coverage.
which game was when Shawon Dunston almost got in a fight with Will Clark at firstbase, I assume it was game 2?
Good point will the thrill was something back then
