This is the biggest reason I watch Sorin. He’s so honest in that even when he does fail there is no shame in it.
Thanks for uploading this. There are many other pepair-men who wouldn't upload videos when they failed. We can learn a lot from this thanks to your courage. I impudently hope you'll show us how you can deal with your customer in this case. Because this sometimes can happen when you run a repair business.

Yeah the conclusion is that to not be a moron and use lab PSU and limit the current first and then use original adapter. . Insted electronics repair school shoud be how to not repair electronics school.

Hey Sorin.I recenly replalced a big capacitor on a tv psu board. I put by mistake the capacitor's plus to the negative on the board and the negative to plus on the board. Then I put the plug! That's it!
I wish I had a camera on recordng.....!

Sometimes the magic smoke go out no matter what you do to keep it inside the circuit. It happen to all of us once an a while. Keep up the repairing spirit, the life is going on
I'm so glad you made this video. I recently had customer with Lenovo laptop, has 3 badly burnt tracks from voltage regulator chip. I couldn't fix it either. Very tough repair. I feel better now knowing it wasn't just me! Told customer he would have to buy a new motherboard. Sorin, to me it looked like you may have soldered the track that was by itself to the wrong trace on the motherboard. If you would have scratched more burn away, I think you may see that you soldered to a trace for the pin to the left? If you still have laptop, you can scrape away more burnt board and see to be sure!

Thanks for the interesting video, not many repairmen will actually show fails. From my side I can add the following. Latitide E7240/7440 can run perfectly without CD3301B mounted on the motherboard. It's easy to bypass this IC and laptop and primary battery will work perfectly. Only downside is that Docking station will not be recognized by the motherboard, but most people never use docking station anyway. I had two E7240s with blown CD3301B fixed simply bypassing it. Don't know why owner of this laptop wanted this dead IC replaced.
It does remind us that failures happen for us to grow smarter and be a better person..thank you sir...

Sorin, first of all...I've learned a lot from this video, probably one of the most important videos...THAT PATIENCE to rebuild those nasty tracks...for me it was the end when you've opened the laptop...a big respect for you man...you can't fix em all, but damn this was a nice lesson for me...I have to be more patient and keep trying...

Thanks for sharing sorin, unfortunately you can't win them all and i feel your pain. I'd be tempted to ditch that repair, just not worth your time and send customer away with another laptop or money back.
nice video man . that was not your fault . this board was so crazy to repair but i think at first you should find out why that chip blowed up like that before . maybe there was a short somewhere else . btw thanks for this crazy video we learn from our defeats ;) keep it on . GL

As I wrote in one of your previos videos, even fails which are normal are learning video for us beginners. I know you feel bad because of this failed repair, but there is no much people who would even try to repair this. They will just say not repairable. So keep up and don't worry.

I think the deeper layers were shorted inside the board where those tracks burnt, since that black soot sh!t it leaves behind tends to be conductive....happened to me a couple of times and scared the crap out of me :))

Fail or not, that's a nice video. It happened to Louis R., and he throwed his soldering iron, the computer, and went to the street for walking. I just wondered why the new chip was destroyed too. Take care Sorin.

36:11 oh Sorin Sorin... I bet you were tired.
Never use regular power supply after that risky/serious repair of burned tracks on the board.
Never use a lab-power supply (with current limit) if you didn't use a multimeter to check for shorts after tracks repair.
Never solder the chip again (after tracks repair), if you didn't start the board without that chip to check for shorts on the board.
Never solder the chip again (even if you check that board is fine and has no shorts after repair) if you didn't check that chip alone on the bench for shorts (edge pins to big middle one -to quickly check if you have few ground pins as normal, or if you have almost all pin shorted to the big middle one)
I know that you know all these rules - I'm only remind you -don't go for the short way, because once you will be lucky, but other time you will loose the board forever.
The care and method of plastic clip removal at this model was interesting, keyboard connections, hinge back plate. Hard drive adapter plate.Spring loaded cover. (half) removal, clear in exactly how to execute removal. I am well prepared to avoid this model. What I learned about was test to the individual trucks ...as well as the inspection at first view when case opened. I had a recent fail as I attempted an early model of Korg sequencer, with a hinge bi-plate. (no joy).
Repairs can be difficult, some a big problem......
It would be a kindness if you might build a working LED strip. I have a motorcycle light to replace turn signals, and while the led strips are inexpensive, I am curious as to best method to supply power and ground....best type of wire, best voltage...and would love your view to that method, of which I think others might be interested. Hot glue to anchor, ect. I really enjoy your craftmanship at chip replacement. I bid you a fair season. M.

Hey sorin nice try but why you didnt use the power supply first instead of charge adapter, will be better to know if were a short before charger plugged. yes maybe putting 1 or 2 volts on that power rail. 3.3v or 5V rail. and inspect for current consumption. i Did a kind of job similar and after rebuild tracks, check for consumptions on that pads before conected the adapter. and voala, just to make sure not short on the chip and on pads. but dont frustrate yourself, that happend to me before and then did the mentioned above. keep going.

the motherboard has become conductive due to the burnt tracks, theres no way to fix it.. unless you can cut out the burnt part, but on a laptop its impossible as there's stuff on otherside of the board. ive seen this happen
carbon is like a resistor nasty stuff, this looks like its burnt through other layers of the board.
still love your work man, we learn, even thou things like these chip got fried, now thats a true tech.

Sir what is the issue with this board? New chip also burned. Now what? Probably we have to replace the motherboard. Videos are very knowledgeable and we learn a lot from them. What I like abour your channel that videos are unedited so we see same as what you see. 👍

On minute 36 the wire was soldered on both sides, the 3rd wire you added on the left side was touching 2 points
For you it was a fail but honestly - I learned very useful trick in rebuilding the tracks and I think that many of viewers took some good advices from this video.

Good job although i would in this case do jumpers after chip replacement. Soldering directly to each pin and then track. Thats just me though.
The prognosis did not look good but for maximum dramatic effect you should not have tipped us off in advance that it was going to go pete tong! Fair play for giving it a go though :-)

That can happen. I've had 6 PC MBs that ran fine for a day or two then suddenly died, and it usually a chip shorting on the MB.
It's like leaving electronics sitting for a long time allows old components to absorbs moisture, then when powered it blows the chips soon after..

First thing I do with an older laptop is change the bios battery. So many times, that solves startup issues...
What a nice video. I'm stuck with the same model. When the power is connected to the laptop, the light on the power pack goes off after a min or two. At times the fan would spin just for a few seconds after pressing the power button without the battery then it would cut off. I did some tests are shown in most videos on RUclips but my tests seem to come out ok. How do I proceed?

I have a Dell E7440 that won't power on. If I plug in an AC Power Adapter to the laptop, the "power on" indicator on the AC Power Adapter will turn off by itself, seems that there is a "short circuit" in the laptop. I called Dell support and they told me that either the motherboard is bad, or the DC Jack is bad that need to be replaced. Do you have an easy way to determine whether the fault is at the DC Jack, or motherboard (without disassemble the whole laptop)?
If it's the motherboard, do you have a tutorial video to show us how to get the motherboard (Dell E7440) replaced? Thanks!
Sometimes the Burned chip is not the problem (as you know) something else give it way to much corrent and they cant hadle it and burn this is like replacing a fuse without knowing why the fuse blow up in the first place

Hi Sorin, first of all: I really like your videos and style. I watch ALL of them. But in this case I don`t get it, I watched this video three times now and I`m missing one thing: You never checked for the reason why the old chip exploded in the first place. Would it have been a bad idea if, after you removed the chip and cleaned up the board, to google the chips datasheet, look what the damaged pins are used for, and then check the 3.3V output for short? You said in the video that this chip is supplying 3.3V. This time you only check for short between your reworked pins. You always PRAY: Use the power supply :-)
I hope you read my comment and respond. I`d really like to hear your opinion. And I think the whole community would.
Again: I really appreciate your work you show to us. Please don`t change anything or try to "improve" (You know what I mean...)
may we know the possible reason why it burned? is it short to ground in the middle layer of the board? or something else shorted in the tracks?
My first thought was that one of your highly calibrated fuse blew, lol.
