    Sweden:
    * Never pays more than 1200kr in one year due to hospital expenses.
    * Schools free of charge, even universities.
    * Free pre-school
    * Paid Vacation
    * Paid maternity leave (sorry, I can't spell the one for dads)
    * Monthly financial aid given to a family for each kid
    * Monthly financial aid can be requested during studies (which can be buffed with loans) to help pay literature, food, bills. You know.
    What do we get in return?
    * A healthy population
    * An educated population
    * A working population sense women can join the work force
    * A healthy population that's more productive because they are well rested.
    * Allowing working parents to raise their child and not having financial problems or losing their job (it's illegal to fire someone based on pregnancy. It falls under discrimination laws)
    * Supporting families with a more restrained budget or saving the money for future use.
    * A high educated population that's not dependent on rich parents to get a degree. Which is needed in most workplaces.
    So yeah, I guess our "socialism" is not that bad?

      Ikajo You forgot that most of that is recent and all of it is going to be unsustainable as the oil reserves run dry and you realize the immigrants outnumber the natives.

    • @Ikajo
      @Ikajo 10 лет назад +69

      henry first It lives about 9 million people in Sweden, about 1,2 millions are immigrants. They don't outnumber the rest of the population. Unless you mean the sammi who are the actual natives in Sweden. Then, yes they are the minority.
      As for oil, Sweden is more aware of the climate change and limits of resources then USA and are doing research. Thanks to an equal education system where everyone can go to university.

      "It lives about 9 million people in Sweden, about 1,2 millions are immigrants.
      Oh it is worse than I thought for Sweden. Goodnight sweet prince.
      "They don't outnumber the rest of the population."
      And in the dense urban areas?
      "Unless you mean the sammi who are the actual natives in Sweden. Then, yes they are the minority." Swedish people are the natives, swedes, including sammi, not including anyone outside of the region.
      "As for oil, Sweden is more aware of the climate change and limits of resources then USA and are doing research. Thanks to an equal education system where everyone can go to university. "
      Off topic. University won't save you with unsustainable programs and no money or resources to pay for them.

    • @Ikajo
      @Ikajo 10 лет назад +52

      Ah, but you see a lots of those immigrants are from European countries or the USA. Sweden has always had a lots of immigrants. The Belgium vallon worker (whose blood runs in my veins), the Finnish workers (whose blood Also runs in my veins) and a lot of others. Even our royal house is French! Back in the days Finland, Norway and parts of the Baltic's belonged to Sweden. So I wouldn't say we have that big of a problem.
      In dense urban areas? You know, there isn't a city where the "Swedish" population isn't larger than the "non-Swedish" population. Given Sweden's history, even the peoples who came from a different country has to be considered Swedish after staying long enough. We like diversity in Sweden. Also, you apparently aren't Swedish, so maybe you shouldn't try to define what a Swede is?
      It's better then USA who think you should drive everywhere and uses up most resources per capita in the Western world. Given the size of USA, making better and cheaper public transportations and recycling systems should be a priority. I live in a small city in Sweden, I don't have a car, I don't have a licence. I don't need them either, because the public transportations are really good. So I can go anywhere I want anyway.

    People need to stop comparing the US to all these countries with entitlements, if the US people want these entitlements, then we need to agree to increase taxes. You can't want without contributing to the funding. It's a constant, "oh did you hear so and so has free blah blah blah", the US picked having "the lowest taxes in the world" vs. all these government funded policies. It's like everyone is so shocked to hear this, yet we picked this... The US is capable of having these things, but not with the taxes we have now...
    Basically, stop complaining how we don't have these things and then complain about raising taxes. It's one or the other, not both!

    • @CitiesSkyGay
      @CitiesSkyGay 10 лет назад +7

      They have higher taxes for pay for other things. They spend it on allowances for families. Plus, since EU and capitalist East Asian countries place little to no tariffs on their merchandise, they need to get revenue somewhere. 53% of our federal taxes go to the military. A huge chunk of that could go to paid vacations and parental leave.

    It actually really upsets me when I realise how far back America is in so many ways. I keep hearing jokes (especially by Americans for that matter) of people calling Australia far back. We're isolated. Not behind.
    Me and my sister were born three months premature, but because of health benefits that are just normal here, the hospital took all the expenses, for the month she spent in hospital prior to the month we spent in hospital after being born. And that was A LOT of money. I remember being told that if I was born in America, I'd be dead. And that's entirely possible. And even if me and my sister had gotten the treatment we'd needed, our family would've had to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars we just plainly didn't have, so for the rest of their lives my parents would have had to pay that off. It'd cripple us, we wouldn't be able to buy all the things we'd need because we'd have to pay it off.
    Oh, and she still got maternity leave after all that.

      A Touch Too Much Osiris Sees Arabella Brown I agree, our taxes arent being spent correctly, but that doesnt mean our system is flawed. Tax dollars should be spent on public services like public education and city services. Welfare and health care are private services. Working Americans shouldnt have to give their hard earned money to those that didnt earn it or made irresponsible decisions and are stuck in shitty situations. Why am I responsible for feeding you, feeding your kids, and making sure they get proper health care? You reap what you sow and thats whats makes our country great.

    I'd say for women their employers should give them work to do at home so their leave pay isn't wasted. All jobs have a computer option such as taking phone calls (call center), organizing files, writing business letters, etc. Just give them the option to work on the computer at home, that's what my mom has been doing the past 8 years.

    • @mintundeer
      @mintundeer 9 лет назад +7

      All jobs cannot be done at home. Think about factory workers, child carers, teachers, metal industry workers, practically all physical workers.

    • @future-nurseredheart5818
      @future-nurseredheart5818 9 лет назад

      mintundeer True, but all factories have a corporate area, correct? Work for corporate for the time being. Teachers can make videos for their students or teach from a camera while a sub makes sure they aren't misbehaving. Physical workers could possibly take home jobs for their company, but that is a stretch considering you need a degree for everything.

    • @mintundeer
      @mintundeer 9 лет назад +3

      well if you have a substitute teacher it is unnecessary to have the real teacher teach, also not everyone has materials to teach from home (my school teaches classes through camera for another school farther away to able to get there in time so I know what im talking about)

    Considering the trillions of dollars in debt the US already is, adding on paid maternity leave for anywhere near the length that some of these countries do is absolutely out of the question at this time. Millions of parents in the US x the thousands and thousands of dollars it takes to raise a child = a helluva lot more debt for the US. I agree that something should be done, but until we resolve our economic issues from other sources, it simply isn't plausible to focus on improving maternity leave issues.

The only reason it's legal is because waay back in the days there was a law against both bestiality and homosexuality. When they took away that law bestiality accidentally became legal too. America doesn't have a federal maternity leave because it is up to the states to decide their own maternity leave. This is freedom. So forcing your people to pay higher taxes to afford "free" healthcare or maternity leave or "free" colleges is freedom? Just remember the only reason Europe is able to invest so much in public welfare programs is because their military expenditure is low because they expect the U.S. to take care of enemies.

    • @goduxunike
      @goduxunike 10 лет назад +60

      We Europeans don't expect. We just know that eventually, the USA has to get envolved because it is a member of NATO. I agree that the States are the country who offers most military resources but its kind of sad that its important to defend people but help them with their health when they can't afford it, is questionable.

I'd rather live here in the UK, pay a similar rate of tax to the US, and get free healthcare (along with maternity leave, university partly paid for me, etc) ...rather than living in the US where I might die from not being able to get insurance but hey at least I'd be well protected from terrorist attacks, right? ...Right...? The US spends more on defence than something like the next 26 countries combined, 25 of which are allies and they still have more terrorist attacks etc.

Not really, 120 dollars and then after that everything is free. Lets say for a cancer patient.. Free.. After 120 dollars.. All medical visits, all drugs, all everything. Free. After 120 dollars. Its really stupid to pay taxes, right?

      Claes Petersson Swedish high-five! It's about $130, but that's not really relevant. ;) Also prescription medication costs you $260, then it's free (the doctor's visits and medication are two separate "funds").
      To be able to get any medically necessary surgery/medication for (almost) free, is pretty damn awesome. Imagine being doomed to die or put your entire family in lifelong debt if you get cancer? Oh, right, there's a tv-show about that in the US...

I mean, doesn't it seem obvious that your conservative media is pulling the wool over your eyes. These countries are clearly happy with their medical care and social welfare in general. Our rich business owners are terrified at the prospect of having to fund this, basically because they are greedy bastards, and have somehow managed to convince those that are most in need of it, that life will somehow get worse if we have what we deserve. The non-wealthy right wing is baffling to me. You fight for your own demise.

    In Norway, where I live, the average person pays about 35-45% of their wages in taxes. Yes, that's alot. But then again, we all get it back in some way. Free education, public daycare, free healthcare for ALL (no need for insurance at all). When I had my son at 24 weeks we both got to stay in hospital for 3,5 months at no cost. We both received medical treatment probably costing up to a million us dollars, I got to stay close to baby, I was given three meals a day, and I received full pay while doing so. Oh yes, and my year of maternity leave was put on hold until we could take our baby home from the hospital. I shudder to think what our finances would look like if this happened in the US. I would probably have to commute from home to the hospital every day, and would end up with a mountain of dept and medical bills. Because I'm lucky enough to be Norwegian, I didn't loose a penny. My son also gets all the follow up medical care he needs for free. Vaccinations, physical therapy, check ups. All of it.
    I pay my taxes with joy, because I have been on the receiving end.

      phoeebee I don't think Americans would hate on this if it were 100% voluntary, where individuals can specifically sign up for a program like this, but the masses are not forced against their will to take part in it.
      All of these things should be voluntary. That's what most people are not understanding. Many here do not want to be forced to pay higher taxes for other people who chose the [very] wrong path in life, like drugs addicts, thugs, etc.

    • @MsMommaRose
      @MsMommaRose 9 лет назад +7

      Steve C We already pay for those that make the wrong decisions. Those that work every day are the ones that cannot afford the medical bills, insurance, and other costs. The average increase in taxes would be offset by not needing to pay insurance premiums, co-pays, deductibles, and such.
      The question isn't if it should happen, but when will it happen?

    • @hijabinomad
      @hijabinomad 9 лет назад +16

      Steve C That makes no sense. In order for the system to work it can't be 100% voluntary. Why? Because that's not how successful taxation works. People who are in need of the benefits would sign up and the people who have the capacity to pay for them without the service would not. Where would the money come from? The entire American capitalist system relies So if a woman is having baby, she is "choosing the wrong path in life?". Your comment is irrelevant to the topic at hand.

    Lot of people are saying it would cost too much to give paid maternity leave. Lets crunch some numbers here:
    - Avg. fertility rate of women in USA is 2.5 babies per woman.
    - Say 50% of the employees in a company are women
    - Each woman will have 2.5 kids in her lifetime. So in a career span of 40 years, a women has 6.25% chances of having a baby in a year.
    - So, if you have 400 employees, you will be giving paid maternity leave to only 25 people in a year. Assuming you give 6 months paid maternity leave, you will only be losing 12.5 people's annual salary worth of money.
    That's really not much for a company. In return you get a healthy, happy and productive workforce, as well as ensuring healthy children who will make up future workforce of the country.

    I think that mothers (or the primary parent) should get 3 months (12 weeks) of PAID maternity leave, 3 months of UNPAID maternity leave, and Job security for up to 6 months of extra time that they might decide to take off. On top of that, the other partner should get 1 month of PAID leave and 2 months of UNPAID leave.

    I don't care if you are liberal or conservative. Paid leave after a baby is born corresponds perfectly with the values of both schools of thought.
    The "how long?" and "how much?" part of the debate is a matter of opinion. EVERYONE should support paid maternity and paternity leave regardless.
    (Personally I think 8 weeks paid leave at an allowance of 500 dollars per week is completely doable in the US)

    Here after the baby is born, each father is entitled to 5 weeks of paternity leave. Only him can take them, it was created to help the father-baby bond. The parents also have what is called parental leave. 50 weeks to share or not among themselves as they see fit. Back in my day, the one taking the parental leave was paid 55% of his/her salary, and if my memory is good, it was not tax deductible.

    There is a reason that all of those countries are putting aside so much money to give women & men time off to tend to their children. You know what that reason is? That they want healthy babies and stable families. This is the corner stone for society to function & thrive. To have high academic goals & that each child reaches their highest potential. They believe that this should not be something that only the rich should be able to achieve. Does that sound so bad? That women can have a baby & stay home for six weeks (what doctors recommend a woman take off to heal after having a baby). To allow men to stay home to help care for the baby & his wife / partner? Most industrialized countries in the world are looking to the US in pity that we don't care for our families.

And quite frankly I don't mind paying more taxes if it means I'd get to go back to college and not have to worry about how I'm going to pay for my inhaler since my health insurance given by my company only covers you after you pay $3,000 deductible.

      Autistic? Wow, what a great way to describe someone (sarcasm). I won't even begin with what's wrong with you using that as an insult, will just move on into my main point without insulting you.
      "Honey", there's the main reason of Bernie isn't of the establishment and won't pay them to vote for him. There's also the fact that Hillary has had super delegates behind her before any of the primaries started - roughly 400 (which quite frankly isn't fair to any candidate). The election is rigged, and that's how it is. No matter what happens to Bernie (as in whether or not he gets the nomination) I will continue to back him through whatever he does and his ideas. Bernie has created a momentum with people of all ages, and it will continue to create momentum and change. He has started a revolution where people will refuse to take part in countless wars, to take care of people, and to understand that our minimum wage hasn't kept up with inflation. I'll continue to be involved in politics - as I have been for the last three or four years now - and I will continue to do what I am doing (research candidates, and see who fits what I stand for morally and not based on parties).
      Have a wonderful day, and I hope maybe you'll find better words to describe people who don't agree with you.
      (Oh, and try not to throw the "get a job" in my face. I have a job that I work anywhere from 40-50 hours a week with $15/hour. I had to move back in with my dad to find a job and then leave four months later after finally getting a decent wage. I pay way more than I need to with taxes and loans that I needed for a SINGLE year of college.)
