1. Women only (no pacing) 2. Mixed (women paced by men... not women... virtually to the tape... this is equivalent to Kipchoge sub 2hrs record in arrangement). So her record is not a surprise.
This has all the makings of a well organised time trial within the race itself. Many factors were at play. Firstly Chicago is the home of Marathon record making as evidenced by its great history. Ruth herself has a fabulous history of consistent performances in a distance that requires plenty of experience and understanding. Given her noted previous slowing in the 2nd half after going too quickly in the early stages (a common error) Ruth was a prime candidate to benefit from the presence of even paced assistance provided. I would totally agree that this particular performance is the equivalent of Kipchoge's sub 2 hour run and is unlikely to be seriously challenged. It also raises the prospect of male performances dipping significantly below 2 hours in the future.
@@Amtcboy Good point - although I am not sure how evenly it is applied in practice. The 'womans only' marathon record where it was explicitly stated that male pacemakers were not allowed, was set in last year's London Marathon at 2 hrs 16.6. Over 4 and a half percent slower. And if anything London had the better running conditions.
@@martinn4031 I am for no pacers, just my opinion. That’s a truest measure of strength, ability and endurance. Like some Majors, they allow pacers only up to the 30th km (or is it 35th).
They do say marathon running is also a big deal, mental. Ruth dedicated the race to Kiptum after the finish. Besides her physical fitness let's not ignore the fact that she was also emotional about Kiptum......African (Kenyan) runners consider themselves as siblings, thus considering themselves a family. My take.
Really fine reporting and presentation. Thank you and very happy I discovered your channel. Very enlightening to hear your quick yet comprehensive insight on the role that both super shoes and drafting can play in benefiting runners. Keep up the great work!
The Kenyans have been under investigation for a number of years. (2014, ) Training Camps are also under investigation. The Olympic Committe has said the Technology to detect lags behind performances. The lure of the money of Marathons is too hard to resist.
So many comments everywhere from level 1 knowledge only. If you subtract just three items (there will be more) from her time, the reported gains from the shoes (racing and training), Maurtens and pacers she would be about a minute slower than Radcliffe. Also Paula's form was not great but Ruth's has improved significantly in a year, see expert analysis here - ruclips.net/video/pwO3oZ7Ymao/видео.html
I have read analysis that suggests that women get more benefit from super shoes because the maximum foam thickness is fixed all athletes while women tend to be lighter with outer legs which means they get proportionately more benefit than male runners. That being said all elite athletes have access to these shoes and Ruth’s result is an inexplicable outlier compared to other runners and her previous performances. Hate to be cynical but……
No super shoe or any kind of dope can make you that fast! Never the less, there will be a testing before wr approval...and envious people will still make stories.
Innocent until proven guilty!

Chicago allows pacing by men or women.
They allow it. Others don’t.

Many many more great performances coming from the great Africans
Too good to be true. Period. I don't buy this "world record" one bit.
If you're here to complain about tech doping stuff it, runners have literally always benefitted from advancing tech
My friend. Why not address the elephant in the room? Microdosing with EPO and other substances that is impossible to detect. THAT is the teal culprit.
You can’t even catch politicians with their dirty money.
is there away to find out
I'm sure that the record is legitimate but I don't think that it is fair for a woman to be able to have male pacers helping her to the record.
I'll make this easy: yes.

There is sexism here do they say the same for the men’s record which is sub 2 hours?

No one talking about the shoes?? No carbon plates earlier. In 2000s
